“Oh, you mustn’t think I mind!” Ross said, appallingly cheerful. James was reeling. Surely Ross didn’t mean -? “No, I’m terribly happy for you both. He deserves a bit of happiness,” Ross continued more softly. He hadn’t turned his gaze away from the sea.
“Well,” James said, dazed. “Er. Thank you?” His face was prickling with heat, despite the cool wind which was blowing off the ocean.
“It’s only that Ann and I had quite got used to having Francis all to ourselves,” said Ross.

James, invalided out to Rose Hill, lives a life of comfortable penury and petty resentment. His main occupation - other than a hate-love feud with Jopson - is making sure he looks his best whenever Sophia visits, and making sure Francis and Sophia are never left alone. One day, he fails.
