Mondstadt & Beyond

Summary:

"Bitterly cold and brittle elemental energy burst forth from the tip of Kaeya's sword to meet Diluc's searing flames head-on. The clash of crimson fire and azure ice created a sudden swirl of wind that stunned them both. This was the grim moment at which Kaeya's Vision appeared."

18 year old Skyla(OC) traced her hands over the floating white text, a dullness in her eyes as she looked past it to see the very event happening in front of her. A scoff leaves her mouth at the ‘gift’ bestowed upon her, the ability to read Vision Holders’ past, present and future. It doesn’t help that this time she’s reading the famous Calvary Captain’s memories.
You should help him out.

“It's not my job to fix people’s problems.”

But then in the memory she locks eyes with 17 year old Kaeya, the despair written in his eyes as blood trails down his face.

“Fine, I’ll do it.”

Because CLEARLY Diluc and Kaeya aren't properly reconciling anytime soon, and our Calvary Captain needs some extra familial love. So we're gonna just shove a little sister figure into his arms and see how things turn out

Notes:

So to those that haven't read Act 1:Mondstadt Memoria, please go to it, it is the fic previous of this one in the 'Memoria, Memoriae' Series(Click here to go to it: Act 1/Part 1 .) The above summary is technicalllyy for that and this is a sequel to that fic. You won't understand this one without reading that one. I've simply curated my previous summary so that new joininers to this series can hop on without being as confused

Act 1 story's summary in full is actually this:

Skyla (OC) let out a startled gasp as she was abruptly woken from her slumber, beads of sweat dripping down her face and back.

She swallowed heavily as she faintly recalled the contents of another strange dream. She was continuously plagued by dreams that often featured Vision Holders. Sometimes it was like seeing a scene from a play, other times words written like a story. It was why she could never look at people the same way again—particularly Kaeya.

Tonight's dream played out a scene she was quite familiar with.

Because CLEARLY Diluc and Kaeya aren't properly/fully reconciling anytime soon, Diluc is always keeping his distance and our poor Calvary Captain needs some extra familial love. So we're gonna just somehow shove a little sister figure in his arms to give him that. The problem is...it would take a while for him to trust someone new with his secret again.

Note:This story is mostly slice of life :D

So have fun with that ^-^ it is completed with 75 chapters and this series is made in a way that you can technically just drop off after Act 1/Part 1 of the series if you wish to have a completed fic.

(Click here to go to it: Act 1/Part 1 .)

Or if you still wanna read the sequel, you can continue here.

...

And viola! To those that are here after reading 75 chapters of Act 1: Mondstadt Memoria. Drumrollllll!

Our realllll summary for this Act 2/Part 2/Sequel is the following:
What does it mean to be part of a family?

Or more specifically, what does it mean to be a part of the affluent Ragnvindr Clan?

Skyla Rowan discovers very quickly that it’s not all that it’s made out to be.

One moment she’s a commoner, but the next moment she’s suddenly thrusted into the center of Mondstadt politics.

It’s not just the nobility…the merchants, the guilds, the everyday people on the streets are looking at her differently.

And she ends up cracking faster than she anticipated.

Diluc and Kaeya reassure her that ‘everything will be alright,’ that they’ll work through it together as initially promised.

But she can’t take it.

And so, like a coward she flees.

Mondstadt is no longer the City of Freedom she knows, so she tries finding it elsewhere.

Chapter Text

Skyla clutched the fancy blue envelope in her hands as she stood in Liyue Harbor, her eyes trained to the Mountains of Dragonspine.

Was it a mistake? Taking advantage of Ayato’s invitation as an excuse to leave Mondstadt?

No.

Skyla quickly shook her head of any doubts that lingered in her mind.

She needed to leave Mondstadt, she needed to find herself again without the noisy background of nobles trying to coax their way into her good graces.

She wanted to find her identity again, not labeled by her affiliation with Diluc or Kaeya.

Inazuma was the way to go for this.

Ayato’s invitation to a medical conference was the perfect excuse to leave Mondstadt without arousing too much suspicion amongst the nobility.

“Skyla? Is that you?”

The adventurer turned around in surprise, “Shenhe? It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”

“It has,” A small smile graced Shenhe’s face. “Are you visiting? I still haven’t done my end of the ‘bet’. We can go to any restaurant you like, as promised. Or if you wish, visit Master first. She has been wanting to see you again.”

Skyla chuckled in return. “That bet was years ago and didn’t I technically lose at first? No, you’re not treating me to food this time.”

“But it happened in the end, a Blonde Traveler and a fairy, they became my friend just like you said. Even if it was past the original deadline we had in store,” Shenhe tilted her head in the side.

Skyla sighed and shook her head back and forth. “Let’s just go visit Cloud Retainer for now, I’m sure she wants me for my ‘otherworldly’ food knowledge.”

“Are you doing the ‘changing topic’ conversation technique again?” Shenhe replied with a deadpan expression as Skyla attempted to move them along.

“Maybe,” The adventurer playfully shrugged with a cheeky smile as she hooked their arms together. “But come on, let’s not keep her waiting too long.”

“Weren’t you just busy right now?” Shenhe raised an eyebrow. “You seemed focused on those mountains.”

Skyla paused momentarily, taking one last look at Mondstadt before turning her back to the scenery. “I’m good for now.”

With a heavy heart, she silently apologized to Diluc and Kaeya for leaving them behind.

Notes:

Hellloowww everybody to the ones that decided to continue with Skyla's journey here. This is the prologue/trailer I had in mind so far. It might be a while til the next real chapter 1 because I'm still going to be doing the Modern AU pieces on Act 1: Mondstadt Memoria and going to tackle those first before I get to here. But yeah ^-^ here we are! Liyue and Inazuma for Act 2.

We are going to tackle Skyla's newest problems of joining the Ragnvindr Clan and her getting used to her newest identity as the Lady of the House :D that coupled with some family angst as our little girl runs away

But as always, virtual hugs~ and feel free to leave any reactions or expectations/guesses as to act 2 of skyla's adventures

not sure how many will be joining us for act 2, but hop on board for the ride ^-^

Chapter Text

As Skyla laid down on her Queen sized bed, she stared at the intricate gold engravings on the ceiling above. A part of her still in disbelief that she now called ‘home’ one of the Master bedrooms of the Dawn Winery.

“It is only fitting since you are now the Lady of the Dawn Winery,” Adelinde smiled brightly upon showing Skyla the newly furbished room .

A small frown appeared on her face as she stretched her right hand up, the silky rich material of the dress sleeves cascading down her arm.

Her eyes briefly flickered over to watch the motion as it revealed her smooth arms, no longer tattered with scars, having been continually cared for by the maids.

Even after fully recovering and being medically cleared, the maids feverishly tended to her in keeping up with giving her the so-called ‘perfect’ appearance.

Makeup was no longer something she did alone to mask her drowsiness.

Instead, it now consisted of an elaborate 10 step day and night routine.

Well, she wasn’t sure of the exact number of steps.

All she knew was that it was too much to count.

This heightened ever further when she was officially declared a Ragnvindr.

The adoptive younger sister of Diluc Ragnvindr and Kaeya Alberich.

The youngest of the Ragnvindr sibling trio.

The newest addition to the Ragnvindr clan.

She had to have the ‘right’ dress, the ‘right’ accessories, ‘right’ shoes, right ‘blush’.

Clothes that weren’t too long or too short, a blouse that was meant to accentuate her chest and sleeves that showcased her slender arms, pants that outlined her waist, skirts with leggings that clung to her body.

She felt like a doll being manhandled so that she could look like a proper noble.

Skyla let out a hefty sigh, looking to her left and the tiny little bell on her new bed room drawer.

The moment that she rings that, a storm of maids would come in and dress her up for the day.

She silently shivered as she imagined it happening again.

Afterall she was a grown woman, she did plenty fine even as an orphan when it came to dressing herself up.

But apparently the moment she steps out of this room according to her own standards, she would be properly redressed and lavished with a boat ton of trinkets and accessories.

Skyla groaned as she leaned her head back and then buried her face with the fluffy blanket. It wasn’t her fault that her favorite color clothings to wear was black and white.

Back at the orphanage, people didn’t donate as much brightly colored stuff or fancy clothing. Usually it was more akin to rags, so she just got used to simple clothing.

Besides, simple clothing was easy to wear, easy to put on, easy to take off and easy to scrub for laundry.

And over time simple clothing just became her comfort clothing as a result of her childhood.

But now?

There were a thousand layers and different types of pieces of clothing that she had no idea what their names even were.

And it didn’t help that the maids enjoyed being able to dress her up, proudly for display in front of Diluc.

And the man would simply look flabbergasted and hire more designers to curate more outfits so there would be a greater selection.

That and also paying the same designers more money for doing such a good job of customized clothing.

Customized clothing.

Oh dear lord.

She rarely got customized clothing from designers in the past, she mostly pieced together and sewed her own stuff.

Saved money, left her feeling satisfied and also she knew her needs the best.

Clothing that was good for multitasking, adventuring, cooking, baking, medical work.

You know, the important stuff.

But now?

Regal, cute, quaint, restrictive, fluffy.

All these other factors that were sending her head spinning.

Skyla cautiously glanced over at the door, wondering if she should just stay at her room all day to avoid the inevitable.

No.

That wouldn’t do any good.

The household workers would worry, bringing her all sorts of trays of food to her bedside in that case. Feverishly worried that she would faint randomly in the mansion.

But that was normal for her - collapsing from lack of sleep and her dream powers.

Not for them though.

They thought she was fragile.

Especially after reviving from a dead state.

It didn’t help that Diluc had been hovering over her endlessly, still reeling from the PTSD of reliving the leyline depicting her death in Kaeya’s arms.

When you have the Master of the House this protective and doting of you, it sets a precedent.

Skyla heaved a second sigh, picking up the handle of the bell.

Despite a month of living in the mansion, she still hasn't gotten used to having people at her beck and call.

She stared at it for a moment longer, hesitancy taking over briefly before ringing it loudly.

Just moments later came a set of knocks on her door, asking for permission to enter and after Skyla’s affirmation…came a storm of five maids with their eyes gleaming with anticipation.

She was swooshed off of the bed, standing in front of the bedroom mirror awkwardly in her pajamas.

Which in the past, was usually just a worn out T shirt and shorts.

Now?

If Skyla wasn’t told directly, she wouldn’t have known that this state of the art pajama had cost nearly a thousand Mora.

A THOUSAND MORA.

It was a silk dress imported from Liyue, delicate fabric that's soft to the touch adorned with intricate flower designs. It hung down to her knees and swayed gracefully at the slightest movement.

It wasn’t even practical for anything else.

Her usual pjs she could throw on as a regular shirt for a lazy day.

Walk around the house no problem.

Go adventuring? No problem.

Go shopping? Yup, the usual.

But this? Nope.

There were a couple of times where she accidentally kept this on while walking throughout the mansion half asleep to get a cup or quick snack…and let’s just say...um…she gained quite a number of additional personnel that viewed her in a different light.

Judging by their blushes and Diluc’s flusteredness when telling her to at least wear a robe on top of the pajamas when leaving her room.

It was probably…well…she rather not think about it too much.

Skyla does a quick glance at the mirror, still in a half daze as the maids are trying out new color combinations.

They already had some outfit ideas in mind, but evidently the moment they saw her even more ideas sprung and they had to modify their original intentions.

It ended up taking a good 30 minutes before they finally decided on the right outfit for her.

She was fitted with a white blouse, a black bow accessory and ruffles by her colarline. On top of that was an open vested red business suit that reached halfway down her blouse. The suit was coupled with long sleeves, lined with ruffles on its interior and this overlapped with her black arm warmers.

Next was a fluffy skirt the shade of pink cherry blossoms and went just above her knees, black leggings and a pair of light brown boots that reached the top of her thighs.

Satisfied with the outfit choice, they worked on gently detangling her bed head before curling it slightly to give it a puffier look.

And after another 10 minutes of deciding accessories, they went with something on the simpler scale much to Skyla’s insistence. A roses hair piece coupled with a flowing bright sky blue ribbon.

She gave herself a onceover in the mirror, doing a twirl on the spot to have a 360 degree look which in turn caused the maids to happily jump at their work.

She silently recalled having to go back and forth with them in the past about dresses, skirts, shoes and accessories.

At one point they wanted to adore heels or flats on her, but she really didn’t approve of that. Mostly because they didn’t feel battle ready.

How was she supposed to run properly from danger if she was going clickety-clack clack every five seconds?

And jewelry?

If they were too long on her hair or ears, they would swing smack in front of her face.

Besides, earrings made too much noise if she wanted to be sneaky.

And aristocratic female hair accessories were excessive. To Skyla, ribbons and hair clips were fine and her norm. Nothing that obscured her view.

She was still a warrior deep down and hated anything that obscured her ability to defend herself.

It was also why she despised the skirt they had put on her, it just felt like an extra layer that she had to be extra cautious and take account of wind dynamics when moving about rapidly.

But apparently, that was an explicit decision made by Diluc, Kaeya and Addie to restrict her movements a bit. Mostly in an effort to prevent her from going into the city.

Going into the city…

Skyla drew out a long breath after thanking the maids and made her way to her bedroom doorway with them following closely behind her.

It would be another week before she’ll be allowed to step in after compromising with her two new brothers.

Brothers…

Skyla rested her hand on the doorknob, her head churning with the new terminology.

It was strange hearing herself say that Diluc and Kaeya were her new brothers…She was so used to saying ‘big sis’ or ‘older sister.’ Never… ‘brother.’

She heaved another sigh for what seemed like the umpteenth time before twisting the knob and going through her doorway.

“Is Diluc up already?” Skyla asked the two maids that were still following her, knowing the other three were already done with their job.

“Yes, Master Diluc is in his study.” Ada responded.

“He ate breakfast already?” Skyla raised an eyebrow, turning around.

“Master Diluc went straight to his study as soon as he woke up, he decided to eat breakfast while working. It appears that today is one of his busier days.” Ada replied in turn.

“I see, could you bring me my breakfast to his study as well?” Skyla asked politely. “I’ll spend time helping him out with the Winery’s affairs alongside him.”

Ada momentarily froze before quickly ordering Millie to get breakfast ready while she went ahead to prepare the study for Skyla’s arrival.

This raised some suspicion within Skyla, but the adventurer made an effort to appear oblivious to Ada’s sudden tenseness. She simply watched as the maid briskly walked toward the study, doing a bow before she left Skyla’s side alongside Millie.

The adventurer let out a long exhale at the situation, deciding to take the long route to Diluc’s study to give time to whatever Ada needed to do for Diluc’s sake. This wasn’t the first time that Skyla walked into Diluc’s study only for the man to try to hastily and attempt to subtly hide sets of paper from her view.

She suspected that it has to do with preparations of the week leading up to her being able to fully re-enter the city. She shivered just thinking about all the conversations she had with Diluc and Kaeya about the new boundaries and new relationship they had in place.

It was then they had agreed to set up a timeline for her to return back to society and how to proceed with her reintroduction as a Ragnvindr.

Ragnvindr…

Ragnvindr…

Ragnvindr…

‘Skyla Ragnvindr’

‘Skyla Rowan Ragnvindr’

‘Skyla Ragnvindr Rowan’

The combinations they had tried coming up with…

In the end, none of them felt right to her.

“I want to stick with my birth name.”

It put a bit of a damper on their plans, but thankfully both Diluc and Kaeya respected her decision.

Ah, we’re here.

She found herself already standing at the doorway of Diluc’s study hearing the sound of paper ruffling and the muffled sounds of conversations.

Oh well, I gave them enough time already.

She placed her left hand on the doorknob, the right hand on the doorway - ready to give notice with a knock.

Afterall, that was what was considered proper.

She could no longer just barge in like she did in the past, shamelessly waltz in and wrap Luc into a random hug.

She was a noble now.

She had to show proper etiquette.

She had to put on a play.

They needed to put on a play to trick the nobility.

Before being able to put down their own standards onto the nobility.

A glint of gold on her left wrist caught her eye.

It was the bracelet Diluc and Kaeya had given her, the golden letters of D, K and S dangling from it.

To be honest, she didn’t like how it jingled and how it gave away her position so easily.

Normally, she wouldn’t wear a bracelet at all - it was too much of a nuisance in battle. She couldn’t shoot a gun or arrow properly with one, it would hit the hilt of her sword blade, run the risk of slipping out if she used a catalyst.

It also didn’t help whenever she was experimenting with lab equipment, risking contamination.

There was always the possibility in the past where it could snag on a patient’s clothing.

But the boys had insisted that during this recovery period or for special events this ornament was perfectly fine.

It was most definitely not because Kaeya was giving her puppy eyes and Diluc’s shoulders had slumped at the mention of her not normally wearing bracelets.

And definitelyyyyy not because Addie was throwing a pleading look and looked absolutely elated when Skyla accepted it in the end.

I’m sorry. I just don’t consider myself a Ragnvindr yet.

That’s why I didn’t accept it originally.

It has nothing to do with you two.

It’s just that…

I don’t believe I deserve that title.

Skyla took a deep breath in, pushing past the hesitancy that plagued her mind.

Knock, Knock.

“Come in.”

The door swung open, revealing Diluc sitting at his usual table and Ada hurriedly arranging files on Skyla’s desk.

The maid did a quick bow at Skyla’s entrance and excused herself to help Millie with preparing the rest of breakfast.

The adventurer did a quick sweep of the room as she let Ada walk past her, if she looked closely enough she could find pieces of paper that seemed to be half-hazardly placed around the room and stuffed into the drawers.

Instead of mentioning the bead of sweat down the side of his face, Skyla opted to play ignorance again and shone a bright smile. “Good morning, Luc.”

Diluc seemed a bit surprised at Skyla's appearance, murmuring about how the maids must have dressed her again.

“Is everything alright?” She interrupted his train of thought.

He blinked in surprise, still examining her from head to toe and his eyes lingering on the left wrist. His gaze softened a bit before giving her a small smile of his own. “Yes, things are better now.”

Foodcrumbs!

(Foodcrumb#1)

As Skyla laid down on her Queen sized bed, she stared at the intricate gold engravings on the ceiling above. A part of her still in disbelief that she now called ‘home’ one of the Master bedrooms of the Dawn Winery.

“It is only fitting since you are now the Lady of the Dawn Winery,” Adelinde smiled brightly upon showing Skyla the newly furbished room .

From what I understand of nobility, usually the Lady of a Household is the wife of the current Master or the Mother of the Master or eldest/closest female relative to the Master.

And during Diluc’s 3-4 years away from Mondstadt, it was Elzer & Addie that took over the Dawn Winery instead of another relative, so I’m assuming he either has no main relatives. Or main relatives/relatives strong enough to take over in terms of authority.

So based on that if you were to look off of the family tree, Skyla would theoretically be the highest female position in the Ragnvindr clan as she is the younger sister of Diluc. However, her power would mainly stem from her relativity/relationship with Diluc since she was adopted in and not blood-related.

As for why I chose to write in ‘Lady of the Dawn Winery’ instead of ‘Lady of Ragnvindr Clan’ is mainly because Skyla internally does not consider herself a member of the Ragnvindr Clan.

Also Diluc’s additional title and term of addressment by others is usually ‘Master of the Dawn Winery’ and not ‘Master/Head of the Ragnvindr Clan.’ I believe this has to do with Mondstadt’s culture of being a place that does not have a ‘King’ in place and their brutal past with taking down the aristocratic nobles that mirrored a Kingdom structure in the past(the Lawrence clan history).

So instead Mondstadt acknowledges people by their personal background and work, not necessarily placing a heavy emphasis on clans/heritance from clans. They may recognize the importance of a clan's history and the modern nobility, but it is not something heavily considered when looking at a person’s work. <-Just a theory

For example, there is recognition that there were 3 clans that are the most prominent families in Mondstadt’s history is the Gunnhildr clan, Ragnvindr clan and Lawrence clan according to Eula’s teaser( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFHfbH8UrFE&ab_channel=GenshinImpact ). And this continues in history to the modern day, the impact of lineage, but overall Mondstadt gives off the vibe that as long you have grit & determination, you can carve out your own path.

(Foodcrumb#2)

Another thing to take into account is that a lot of what is going on in this chapter comes from the lens of an unreliable narrator.

I believe that may throw some people off since it seems like the entire chapter she is complaining about everything. Most would be overjoyed at being thrusted into the role of Cinderella, no need to worry about food, water, dress. Access to luxury. A new family.

(Foodcrumb#3)

Sooooo the story to this picture is a big one XD

But also first and foremost, credit needs to be given to @hanausagitohosi who allowed for people to use this picrew to make characters for non commercial usage https://picrew.me/en/image_maker/1555093

It took me like 3 hours of perusing through picrew to find the right picrew to use to create this new version of Skyla and her new typical default outfit. There were not a lot of picrews that did aristocratic like clothing 😅

It terms of how I chose this outfit for her, I did it as combination of what I thought Skyla would like versus how the maids would wanna dress her. BUt had to take color combinations into consideration and the limited options I had.

For color scheme, as referenced in the wiki page of Chapter 76 in Act 1, Skyla typically wore black & white shades to symbolize how much of an NPC look she had. She was always someone that ‘faded’ into the background and was never really someone that was in the spotlight. This was also the reason why her hair was chosen to be brown, much like the NPCs of Mondstadt.

However, for her outfit, I wanted her to appear more vibrant, almost as if this was a new beginning for her -> mostly due to the influence of Kaeya & Diluc-> so I wanted to go with red, blue and purple color schemes. Purple being her main color since its a combination of red & blue.

Originally I wanted to give her a blue coat, but there wasn’t a shade of blue 😅 so I went with red instead since it coupled well with the pink skirt.

The pink skirt being a variation off of red, the fluffiness of it & the shades of white symbolizing her innocence when it comes to the world of Mondstadt nobility. But also I like to believe that was an intentionally done move by her maids to accent the air of nobility around her. Her skirt is almost cloud-like, bouncy and moves in a way that makes Skyla appear small & innocent, giving her also a cute air/atmosphere.

Black leggings as something off of her old outfit, being able to move alright and also because she didn’t wanna feel vulnerable wearing a skirt only.

Boots being the choice of Skyla arguing that she didn’t want to wear heels/flats, her also arguing that Kaeya & Diluc wear boots all the time and they look perfectly fine/noble. Hence why they gave in. She actually wanted to go with a darker shade of brown boots just like her old pair, but the maids wanted to stay with the cute & innocent vibe so they went with a lighter shade of brown.

Arm warmers since she preferred fingerless gloves to do her experiments properly.

As for the hair ornaments, the red roses symbolizing Diluc while the blue ribbon symbolizing Kaeya in terms of their color schemes.

As for the frame of the picrew, I went with stars instead of flowers because of her divine background(spoken in Act 1’s chapter 76 wiki page, the end of the wiki page). In some ways you can say that she’s more similar to the Traveler than an average human of Teyvat

(Foodcrumb#3)

Judging by their blushes and Diluc’s flusteredness when telling her to at least wear a robe on top of the pajamas when leaving her room.

It was probably…well…she rather not think about it too much.

So the reason why Diluc reacted in this way was because he wasn’t expecting people to like become romantically attracted to his sister just because PJs, like in his mind, it was just good quality expensive PJs.

And I don’t think he was certainly expecting sexual or erotic comments about her from visitors (its not mentioned hereby Skyla bc she’s an unreliable narrator and still getting used to living in a house with people, but sometimes in the morning she wandered about in PJs when there were guests visiting the mansion)

He was also dealing with a side issue of similar caliber and he was just flabbergasted at people’s perception. All I will be saying on the matter is uhhh *cough* if you recall Diluc & Kaeya are already considered like the hottest bachelors of Mondstadt.

And Skyla already had a very impressive background, when you add the title of Ragnvindr to that…uhhh…COUGH…let's just say considering she’s single, she is a VERy favorable looking bachelorette. Especially since she now has a share of the Dawn Winery.

But overall, I think Diluc was not mentally prepared to deal with people coming to him about this, because typically I believe you go to the head of the household to ask sometimes ask for permission to date. I think he’s aware of people who also went after Kaeya in the past, but now Skyla is also being thrown into the fray 😅 And he’s already struggling with the whole new little sis dynamic, add onto that and he’s frazzled a bit

(Foodcrumb#4)

Author Note:

Helllooo everyone! Sooo I had some trouble writing the modern AU chapters so I decided to just go straight to work on Arc 2 while working on the modern AU chapters on the side.

This chapter takes place a couple days after the Arc 1, or perhaps a week. I don’t know the specifics tbh XD

That coupled with a sorta stalker situation for about a month or two that kept me on my toes for a bit. So yeah, didn't have as much time to work on fanfiction. Hopefully it will continue to die down. It’s not yet to the point that I can report to the police, I feel like because mostly it's just predatory and creepy, and legally people can still try to pursue others that like romantically rejected them more than once. Also the police aren’t really dependable here, unfortunately.

Anyway, uhhh, idk how many of yall are continuing with part 2, or just kinda checking it out, but I hope you enjoyed the chapter! ^-^ free hugs to everyone as always! And feel free to leave any sort of reactions in the comment section

Chapter Text

“Lady Skyla, I really have to say, amongst all my students you’ve been one of the quickest learners.” The female teacher said in a pleased manner, pride in her voice.

“Is that so?”

Lehrerin studied Skyla’s facial expression, how the girl’s smile didn’t reach her ears. Yet it radiated a certain brilliance, picture perfect almost.

It matched with the rest of the golden aura that seemed to surround her.

One. Two. Three.

One. Two. Three.

One. Two. Three.

The young girl’s pink fluttery skirt swayed gracefully according to her smooth movements, her body poised and upright as she made confident strides while practicing dance steps.

The sun beamed down from the windows onto her fair complexion and shed light on her figure. It accentuated the faint blush on her face and reflected off of her soft brown curls, adding an etherealness to the scene.

With the music playing in the background, it felt like witnessing a fairy take their first steps.

In addition to dance lessons, Lehrerin was also in charge of guiding the young lady in other aspects of nobility.

“As I stated in the past, afternoon tea’s focus is on networking, connections and exchanging information.” Lehrerin instructed, watching as the Young Lady diligently took notes in a journal while seated in a makeshift tea setup. “So make sure to have a proper meal before going to a tea party, but not so much that it makes you feel lethargic.”

“One should pay attention to the type of food you eat prior to the tea party. If you eat too many sugar items prior to the meeting, there is a good chance of experiencing a sugar high followed by a sugar crash.” Lehrerin continued onward, rolling the dice in her hands as she paced around her student. “Hearty meals with protein are a good source of maintaining energy throughout a tea party, after all sometimes it is a ladies’ battlefield.”

“However, if you eat too much of it beforehand, there is a chance of your body taking up all your energy to digest it - a food coma. This can cause lower mental fortitude.” Lehrerin warned appropriately, a small proud smile curled up on the corners of her face as she watched Skyla take a small sip of tea with the correct hand posture before jotting down some more notes.

Not completely refined and a bit stiff, but very well done for a complete beginner.

Lehrerin guessed that it was due to the girl’s Akademiya background that helped her learn at a faster rate. It wasn’t just table mannerisms that Skyla memorized relatively quickly, it seemed like she had a good grasp of the Ragnvindr Clan history as well.

“After Lady Vennessa’s successful rebellion against the repressive aristocracy, the Dawn Knight converted the aristocrats’ indoor baths into the Mondstadt Library. However, due to the Great Fire of Fall Equinox, the library was reduced to one-sixth its original size.” Lehrerin recited out loud.

Much to Lehrerin’s surprise, Skyla began reciting out loud as well.

One day, at the crack of dawn,

A dancer whose sword was her song set foot in Mondstadt.

Though clad in chains with cuffed hands and fettered feet,

In her silence lay a song:

It was the song of freedom. A song of a brighter dawn beyond the walls,

A joyous ballad sung without reservation by a people unrestrained.

A hazy look took over the Young Lady, her shoulders slumped as she stared afar. Her voice was gentle, yet strained.

For some reason, Lehrerin couldn’t help but feel like the atmosphere had become heavier and a sense of nostalgia had taken over.

She was the dawnlight of the Wanderer's Troupe,

Lady Skyla’s eyes glistened, choking over her words slightly.

But she spelled eternal midnight for the Aristocracy.

A deep breath.

No.

A deep sigh.

Puzzlement.

Confusion.

Finally…Curiosity.

I once asked her, "Why do you come to overthrow our aristocrats?"

"Do you not know that they are the first among us?"

"Wherefore do you place their lives on a pedestal?"

Came her voice, like a fresh breeze,

"If you claim to know the wind as your companion,"

"Then did you not once know freedom, too?"

A small shudder.

To her lonesome listeners she told a tale:

A tale of our rulers' better ancestors who held divine power,

A tale of angels, gods and vile dragons,

A tale of the deities and peoples of all the land.

Each myth and legend she turned to song,

And the wind carried the song to all corners of the land.

Pressed lips and furrowed eyebrows that conveyed regret and melancholy.

In the aristocrats' arena, her sword sang once more:

Her final masterpiece, but it stopped short of perfection.

A nameless knight retrieved her sword from the blood-soaked battlefield.

And buried it where the gentle winds meet in communion .

Mouth agape, Lehrerin found herself staring at the girl stuck in a trance-like state. “Y-Yes…that is indeed the ‘Ballads of the Squire,’ the one suspected to be written by the Dawn Knight himself. I-I believe that was the entirety of the second volume.”

“Ah, yes. My volume two, that was what it was.” Skyla blinked monotonously, her eyes becoming heavily lidded.

The girl then became quiet and solemn, pulling her knees up to her chest on the couch seat. “Tis a bygone era after all.”

Lehrerin briefly paused, studying the girl’s reaction and closed her instructor book. Concern laced her heart as she started to recall one of Master Diluc’s warnings.

“Oh, and one more thing. Skyla…has a unique condition. Sometimes she’ll space out and become deeply entrenched in her thoughts or memories. It can come to the point that she’ll faint or just fall asleep. During those times, she can be heavily affected by her emotions.”

“I kindly ask that you simply give her time to let her return to reality…sometimes she’ll be gone for minutes and then return to us confused. If you see her pinching herself, it’s because she’s trying to test if she’s in reality or a dream.”

“I see…that is a unique constitution. Has she seen anyone for it?”

Diluc let out a light chuckle. “She’s one of the best medical professionals out there and affiliated with a lot of them as well.”

“So…I’m guessing there’s no cure or this is something she mitigates.”

Diluc tilted his head to the side slightly, “Considering that you are an esteemed instructor, I trust you know or will come to know how to handle this type of situation.”

A slightly animosity in his tone.

A warning.

Do not cross the line.

Do not think to use this as a weakness.

Hmmm…

Which means that there have been others that have already noticed this pattern from Lady Skyla.

Already those that have tried to take advantage of it.

A slight shiver goes down her back at the subtle sheen glare Master Diluc gives when delivering the statement.

And it can’t help but confirm the rumors already floating around, half of which she guesses originated from the Dawn Winery Master himself.

‘Diluc Ragnvindr and Kaeya Alberich are very protective of their newest adoptive little sister.’

Lehrerin nearly let out a huff at the ridiculousness of the situation overall-

They kept her out of the public’s eye for over a month.

A week or two perhaps was normal.

But a month?

That was ridiculous.

It spurred a new set of nicknames…one in particular stood out.

‘The Princess of the Dawn Winery’

It was a spin off of the ‘Uncrowned King’ title Diluc Ragnvindr had earned.

One, because Diluc had sheltered Skyla for so long that it practically felt like a King sheltering a jewel.

Two, had Mondstadt’s history up to today dictated a strong aristocratic standing - perhaps the Ragnvindr family would be considered a dukedom given their contribution to society. And in turn she would be considered a ‘princess’.

Three, the situation drew parallels to the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ fairytale. The death, the coma and the reawakening.

Four, supposedly the few people that visited the Dawn Winery Manor and happened to get a glimpse of the ‘fair maiden’ supposedly became heavily enamored with her.

Describing her delicate figure, silk draped over her milky white bare shoulders.

Well, then again it was said in a drunken stupor because apparently Master Diluc had threatened them not to speak a word about it.

Lehrerin half-wondered if the situations were a setup.

There was no way that the hidden gem just happened to walk in on the business meetups. Right?

“Oh, yes and ummmm.” Diluc awkwardly coughed into his fist and looked to the side as he pushed forward a set of envelopes. “Skyla doesn’t know about these yet, so please make sure she doesn’t find out. And if she does, please redirect her attention to something else. We’re not ready for her to deal with that part of noble society.”

Hm?

Lehrerin opened the envelopes one by one, quickly realizing the reality of the Ragnvindr Family’s state of affairs.

‘Lady Skyla, it is with heartfelt sincerity that I offer…’

‘Milady, as the flowers bloom over the horizon so does the…’

‘Dearest Fairy of Flames that had lit the flame in my soul…’

Lehrerin practically gagged at the obscurity of the written contents, quickly choosing not to skim over them after seeing the fifth letter’s words. “It's only been a couple of days and I see that proposals are already in…judging by your reaction I suppose when it is time…I’ll teach Lady Skyla on how to handle these? As well as…um…other methods of ‘affection?’”

Master Diluc turned a subtle shade of pink, rubbing the back of his neck as his eyes wandered the room. “Nononono.”

He sighed heavily and massaged the temples of his forehead. “I mean…it is…strange imagining her to be in a relationship already.”

“And all these people asking me for permission to be able to date her are even stranger,” Diluc clasped his hands together into a bridge.

“Ah.” Lehrerin chuckled lightly, amused at the sight but also happy to see the atmosphere lighten. “It seems like Master Diluc is having trouble realizing that Lady Skyla is already of age. Come to think of it, are you going to host a debutante for her?”

“Um…I want to, but ultimately the decision is hers.” Diluc shyly responded.

Master Diluc really does treasure Lady Skyla as family, seeing this side of him certainly was a surprise to Lehrerin’s image of the man.

Stoic but courteous and always knows when to mask his true emotions.

“Master Diluc truly does care for her Ladyship.” Lehrerin commented honestly. “But there is one thing I want to know before starting lessons.”

She tilted her head to the side. “If Master Diluc truly wishes to care for her Ladyship, why have you not fully bestowed your protection onto her? I need to know what I’m getting myself into before fully committing.”

The Winery Owner paused, his sharps eyes on her once more. “I’ll answer that in turn with another question - What are your thoughts behind it? Considering that you’ll be her new instructor, I hope you’ll be able to analyze her well in the future.”

One, considering that he is challenging her instead of directly answering it must mean that he already offered to bestow the Ragnvindr name onto Skyla.

But why then? Why on official documentation is her surname still ‘Rowan'? Was there a delay in documentation?

She shook her head from side to side.

No, that wouldn’t be possible.

Kaeya Alberich is Lady Skyla’s brother, he would have facilitated the transition seamlessly. Not to mention the Acting Grandmaster is her Ladyship’s mentor, it is well known to the public that the two girls have a strong bond to the point that they hang out together recreationally.

There is also the Chief Alchemist, Librarian, the Reconnaissance Captain and so many more important Knights of Favonius figures intertwined with her Ladyship.

They would not sit still if there had been a delay.

Ah.

‘Kaeya Alberich’

Come to think of it, why did Master Kaeya keep his name as well?

Was it an influence from him?

Is that why her Ladyship chose to keep hers as well?

Then again, when Master Crepus was still alive, he feverishly defended the boy when introducing the Young Master as part of the Ragnvindr family.

Lehrerin closed her eyes, tracing the faint memories she had of the past and the controversy regarding that. It eventually got quieted down by Master Crepus’ influence and squashing down any rumors or bullying targets as his second son.

The instructor opened her eyes and slowly studied Master Diluc’s statue once more. Is this eldest brother planning to do the same for his sister?

If so, then there is only one answer: Lady Skyla chose this route herself.

Lady Skyla chose to retain her surname and her brothers chose to respect it.

No change or additional middle name.

Just her and herself.

As an adoptee, it makes introduction to noble society a bit more difficult.

Then again, for the people that are so apprehensive about noble bloodlines, they would continue to scorn the adopted children anyway. Even when shushed, they would do so behind closed doors.

It is a battle that can last a lifetime.

Lehrerin pressed her lips into a thin line at the train of thoughts in her head. This means the moment she associates herself with Lady Skyla and the Ragnvindr household, she’ll be dragged into it too. Even if she were to cut off ties in the future, it will be a mark on her history as the instructor of Lady Skyla.

Any subsequent decisions made by the Young Lady will reflect onto her as well.

But then again this is the Ragnvindr household, historically has been known as one of the most prominent families in Mondstadt and she has no doubt they will continue to uphold that legacy in this generation.

And…

Lehrerin glanced over to the window overlooking the Winery grounds, seeing the Young Lady pass by with an entourage of servants.

She has a feeling that Lady Skyla will bring about a welcome change.

Not to mention, given the Young Lady’s past, Lehrerin’s instincts tell her that Lady Skyla will only push the Ragnvindr family into further glory.

“Well, lucky for you Master Diluc, I enjoy challenges and look forward to changing future standards laid in place.” Lehrerin finally responded after much contemplation, raising her wine glass to toast.

The Winery Owner paused a bit before raising his own glass, “I look forward to our cooperation during this trial period.”

Lehrerin let out a heavy sigh as she got out of her own set of memories. Lady Skyla was still stuck in her dreamworld scape, eyes hollow as if she was soulless.

Somehow that left a bad state in Lehrerin’s mouth, it was strange seeing the Young Lady in such a vulnerable state.

Suddenly she heard the creek of the wooden floor and instinctively shielded the Young Miss, only to quickly become bashful upon realizing who it was.

“Apologies, I thought it was someone else.” Lehrerin chuckled awkwardly, letting the tension dissipate from her body.

“No worries, I understand Madame Lehrerin.” Master Diluc gave a small smile of his own as he walked over to the living room couch with a set of fluffy blankets.

He then gave one to her before taking the rest and gently wrapping them around his sister, instructing her to do the same.

In the end, it ended up looking like Lady Skyla was stuck in a mini-blanket fort.

“Um, are you sure this is all she needs?” Lehrerin raised an eyebrow.

“It’s not good to move her or she’ll be more confused when she fully becomes conscious, but technically she can still feel outside stimuli to some extent.” Master Diluc explained. “She’s fond of Kaeya’s fluffy jacket, so as a substitute we’ve been using fluffy blankets when she’s stuck in this state.”

“Is that so?” Lehrerin heaved a sigh, sitting next to the girl on the couch.

“Are you nervous? Having this type of student?” Master Dikuc asked in an amused manner, crossing his arms as he leaned on one foot.

“I don’t know, good sir.” Lehrerin sighed again, scratching her hair. “I’m half surprised you don’t have a medical team around 24/7, what if she falls into trouble for real and not just one of these ‘episodes’?”

“Every one of the servants is trained to distinguish that.”

“...”

“Is something wrong?”

“Nevermind.” Lehrerin let out a long breath. “I’m just a bit confounded at how you stated earlier that you were nervous about being a proper older brother to her. And yet at every turn, you prove the opposite.”

Master Diluc froze, staring back at her in a stunned state. “Well…I struggled with it in the past, so I’m just trying to be more careful now.”

Ah, Master Kaeya.

And if she recalled correctly, Lady Skyla’s presence had helped facilitate better communication between the brothers lately. Well from the public gestures it looked that way.

“Take care of her for me, would you?” Diluc stated nonchalantly as he walked away, not looking back once.

Strange.

How does he trust me that much to take care of his sister already?

She did a quick survey of the surroundings, slowly realizing that there were pairs of eyes monitoring her this entire time.

I rest my case, he’s an overprotective older brother .

If you recall from the wiki, Skyla is a faster learner due to being a reincarnater of worlds and also because of her dream abilities. There is a high chance that she previously was nobility in one of her past lives and in her dreams she often observed/mimicked others to pick up new skills.

When Anna Maria Russell began the tradition of afternoon tea, it quickly became a trendy social event of the era. To this day, tea time is still an excellent excuse to gather around the table to enjoy delicious snacks and drinks and, well, to spill the tea. Karene A. Putney agrees, although she says it's always best to keep the chatter clean and positive — as tempting as it may be to bring the juiciest topics to the table.

She recalls the early days of afternoon tea, from Queen Victoria to Queen Mary, as "a great time for ladies to get together. They would gather not for negative but for healthy gossip," she says with a laugh. Gary Williams notes that it's smart to steer clear of controversial or dense topics. "With tea, it's supposed to be light conversation," he says. "We're not here to talk about the next president or the church."

“After Lady Vennessa’s successful rebellion against the repressive aristocracy, the Dawn Knight converted the aristocrats’ indoor baths into the Mondstadt Library. However, due to the Great Fire of Fall Equinox, the library was reduced to one-sixth its original size.” Lehrerin recited out loud.

https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Knights_of_Favonius_Headquarters#Library

The library was formerly a bathhouse created by the aristocracy for their personal use, and Ragnvindr converted it into a library after Vennessa's rebellion. At one point, it was the largest library in northern Teyvat, but was reduced to one-sixth of its original size following its destruction during the "Great Fire of Fall Equinox."[1] It is unclear whether the rest of the headquarters was converted from the aristocrats' baths, or if it was built following the Great Fire of Fall Equinox.

https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Ballads_of_the_Squire

Ballads of the Squire is a Book Collection found in Dawn Winery, Mondstadt. Volume 1 can also be obtained by initiating and following a certain dialogue path from Ellin.

Ballads that have been passed down since the aristocratic period and are said to come from Ragnvindr the Dawn Knight himself. They tell of Ragnvindr's days as a knight's squire.

https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/Dawnlight_Swordswoman

Because the Wanderer's Troupe took in people from all over Teyvat, her origins remain a mystery. The Dawnlight Swordswoman first met with the Conductor and the Sojourner, and later Kreuzlied, with whom she formed the Wanderer's Troupe.[2]

As a group they both performed music and fought against the oppressive Aristocracy. As part of the Troupe, the Dawnlight Swordswoman wielded The Flute sword. Their final act was to storm the City of Mondstadt in an attempt to overthrow the Aristocracy. They failed, however, and the Dawnlight was enslaved as a gladiator.[3]

Despite losing all her hope and her friends, she continued to sing of freedom. Her words strengthened Ragnvindr's resolve to fight against the aristocracy. She eventually died in the arena, which Ragnvindr witnessed. After her death, he buried her with her sword and adopted the title of "Dawn Knight" for himself after her own "Dawnlight."[1][4]

https://genshin-impact.fandom.com/wiki/The_Flute

A nimble sword with holes and delicate engravings on the blade. The sword once made the sound of a flute when wielded by one with the requisite skill. The pitch and tone were determined by the swinging angle.

This sword was buried when the Wanderer's Troupe disbanded. Unearthed years later, it has long since lost its ability to sing.

Even so, it still makes for a lethal weapon.

Among the members of the Wanderer's Troupe was a valiant sword-wielding dancer.

After the Troupe's attempt to tear down the ruling class failed, she was enslaved as a gladiator.

Though all her hope and all her companions were lost, still she fought bravely.

Her sword sang with the radiance of the morn's light, and she was dubbed the "Dawnlight Swordswoman."

In his youth, the Dawn Knight Ragnvindr was in the retinue of a knight.

He went with his master to watch a gladiator match, and was moved by the Dawnlight Swordswoman's splendid finale.

He named himself the Dawn Knight in her honor, and knew in his heart what he must do next.

Personally I like to imagine that Venti was close with the Dawn Knight aka Diluc’s Ragnvindr  ancestor. So Skyla had exposure to Venti and the Dawn Knights’ thoughts when she witnessed Venti’s memories. And there is a chance she was exposed to the moment that the Dawn Knight wrote the Ballad, feeling his emotions and thoughts during the process. Hence why in this excerpt she says ‘My volume two’ as if she was the Dawn Knight. But then it reverts back to her point her view, hence why she says ‘tis a bygone era after all’

(Foodcrumb#7)

As well as…um…other methods of ‘affection?’”

So referencing back to why Diluc was all flustered in Chapter 1, he wasn’t expecting people to send marriage offers to Skyla so soon and was mentally unprepared for it. And it was worse when people were thinking of being sexually intimate with her. Because in Diluc’s eyes, Sky is his little sister and forgets that she’s 21 and an adult that is at an marriageable age

(Foodcrumb#7)

The Winery Owner paused a bit before raising his own glass, “I look forward to our cooperation during this trial period.”

Lehrerin is implicitly answering Diluc’s question. He’s also asking the instructor, are you ready for fight for a girl that is considered a Ragnvindr but society will probably argue otherwise - not only because Skyla chose to keep her own name but also because she’s not a blood relative of Diluc. If you aren’t, you shouldn’t take this job. And he replies with ‘trial period’  because he doesn’t fully trust this person yet, wants to see if she is a good fit for Skyla. So the question he asked was a test

(Foodcrumb#8)

Lehrerin let out a heavy sigh as she got out of her own set of memories. Lady Skyla was still stuck in her dreamworld scape, eyes hollow as if she was soulless.

Suddenly she heard the creek of the wooden floor and instinctively shielded the Young Miss, only to quickly become bashful upon realizing who it was.

“Apologies, I thought it was someone else.” Lehrerin chuckled awkwardly, letting the tension dissipate from her body.

I didn’t want someone that just automatically liked Skyla, I wanted someone who was neutral and analyzed the situation from a logical perspective. So here, the instructor wasn’t automatically protective of Skyla’s vulnerability, but rather found it logically as a bad weakness and is wondering if it's worthwhile to teach someone with such a big weakness.

But also underneath that, there’s a bit of pity at the situation and also shows that the instructor is a good person at heart.

She automatically shielded Skyla, not knowing who was coming into the room and didn’t want to let anyone else see the weakened state of the Young Lady.

You also see here that compared to the entirety of the chapter, she instinctively refers to Skyla as ‘young miss’ instead of ‘young lady’.

Consciously she calls Skyla ‘young lady’ but on an instinctive level she refers to Skyla as ‘young miss.’ Logically she knows that skyla is supposed to be nobility right now, but I think deep down she has yet to fully acknowledge that since Skyla is her student & only recently became nobility from a commoner status. But also ‘young miss’ because in the instructor’s eyes, I believe she sees Skyla as someone small and needs to be protected almost like a child. Naive and innocent to the world.

Author Note:

Overall, I don’t know if Diluc & Kaeya had someone teaching them both the ways of nobility. So I decided to go with the route that perhaps their usual instructor was unavailable or they only taught boys nobility mannerisms and change the plot later if necessary.

On other fun news as an ao3 author, my dentist cut my tongue and bunch of other parts of my mouth and in terrible tooth pain bc I’m like 95% sure they also cut too deep into my nerve when filling my cavities. Soooooo I bled a lot of blood and I can’t eat, i can only drink soup right now. Very hungry. The copay was like a hundred bucks and they refuse to do a refund. So fighting for my money right now. No apology either :D

God damn the ao3 author phenomena/trope is wild 0-0

Anyway, hope all is well on u guys end and maybe i’ll get back to the modern au stuff when its easier to write. also got jury duty coming up

Sayonaraaaaaa and virtual hugs as always anddddd feel free to leave any reaction in the comments below.

But yeah npc chapter for today, figured it would give a new perspective on things

Oh yeah have fun with the eclipse for everyone in the eclipse route! ^-^

Chapter Text

Skyla nervously adjusted her brand new red skirt adorned with all sorts of golden tricklets and embroidery. The maids had chosen to pair it up with her usual white blouse and sleek red suit.

Then there was the hat the servants insisted that she wear to protect her from the sun.

She fidgeted with its light blue flower ornaments a bit before finally settling her gloved hands onto her lap.

“Do we really have to do this?” Skyla sighed heavily, looking out through the carriage window.

“It’s a performance, remember? Until things settle down.” Diluc reassured from the seat across from her.

“I hate performances…” Skyla pouted slightly, grumbling underneath her breath.

Diluc turned back to her, his voice apologetic as his lips pressed into a small frown. “I’m sorry…that things turned out this way.”

Skyla stiffened slightly, turning away from the window to Diluc with a scrunched face. “Don’t be like that. I told you already, it’s not you or Kaeya’s fault that things turned out this way.”

“It’s my fault that you caught up in everything…and…”

The unspoken words lingered in the air, creating a heavy atmosphere.

Skyla exhaled out a long breath in exasperation, leaning forward from her seat and flicking Diluc’s forehead.

Diluc let out a quiet ‘ouch’, displaying some annoyance on his facial expression and then returned to his usual stoic face.

Skyla laughed at the sight. It was then that they heard a quiet set of knocks on the carriage door, drawing their attention to the carriage door.

“Master Diluc, Lady Skyla, we’re here.” The coachman said gently, subsequently opening the carriage door in full and bowing in front of them in the doorway.

Out of instinct, she got up at the coachman’s directions but was immediately stopped by Luc.

“Let me guide you down,” Diluc stepped forward and once he reached out the carriage he extended his hand out as a gesture to help her down from the carriage.

As she started to stand up from her seat, she noticed a small group of people that started to crowd near the carriage with curiosity brimming in their eyes.

She gulped nervously, her palms becoming sweaty with all this new attention and anxiety slowly bubbling up from within.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got you.” Diluc’s eyes softened as he extended his hand out some more, palms upward in an open invitation.

She hesitated slightly, feeling even more pairs of eyes on her as she took his hand and stepped down from the carriage.

Silently she recalled the instructions her etiquette teacher gave:

“Shoulders back, head high and let yourself relax when you step out. Those with scrutinizing eyes will recognize even the smallest of stiff muscles.”

Which in turn made her tense up even more unfortunately during their practice runs.

And now?

It was the real thing.

“Don’t worry about anything. You’re always been a good actress, I’m sure you’ll do well.”

“But I feel like a fraud…an imposter.”

“You are our sister, a Ragnvindr, and no one can tell you otherwise.”

Suddenly a gust of wind blew, throwing her off balance as she frantically tried to keep her skirt down.

Diluc was immediately at her side, steadying her at once and calling for one of the servants to give chase to the hat that had flown off of her head.

With the headpiece now gone, she could see the crowd more clearly, sending her into a panic spiral as she felt her cheeks heat up in embarrassment at her blunder.

Her stomach curled as she internally chastised herself, she had only officially taken one step into the city and already she messed up.

Whispers in the crowd arose as Skyla slowly raised her face to continue with the ‘performance.’

Shoulders rolled back, head high-

“Is that Skyla?”

“It seems like it, I wasn’t sure with the hat, but now that it’s gone…”

“She looks so different!”

“She’s not dead! See, I was right!”

“Of course she isn’t dead, Master Diluc and Captain Kaeya already said that.”

“And the drunkards too!”

“But who knows! They could have just been covering things up, just like the whole memory loss thing-”

“BIG SISTER SKY!”

A chorus of high pitched voices made Skyla jump up before she nearly flew backwards, getting tackled at the knees and waist level.

Looking down, she found her face to face with several children of Mondstadt that she had become familiar with after returning home from her Teyvat travels.

Will and Jill bounced up and down as they clung to her skirt. “Big Sis, Big Sis! You’re back! We’re glad you’re okay. When can you go fishing and crab hunting with us at Falcon Coast again?”

“No! Big Sister Skyla is going to try my newest dishes! I made her Liyue food to celebrate her recovery,” Xi'er tugged Skyla’s right arm in admonition.

“Um, Skyla, how are you feeling? I heard mommy praying to Papa Toes so that you would get better quickly.” Lily shyly followed up from Skyla’s left side.

“If you’re all better, you can watch me pull that big sword out of the ground! I’m sure of it! I’ll get it out this time.” Young Arthur insisted, booming his voice amongst the group of children.

Skyla couldn’t help but chuckle at their enthusiasm to interact with her.

Eyes crinkled, she enveloped them in a big bear hug. “I missed you guys.”

The children snuggled up to her embrace, replying in their own way about how much they missed her as well.

“Are you back for real this time?” They called out, hope in their eyes.

She chuckled at their enthusiasm as she pulled back, staring at the group in front of her. “Yes, I’m back for real this time.”

“Milady, would you still like your hat? Or prefer to keep it off for the duration of your stay in the city?” Ada stepped up next to her master’s side.

“I think I’m good, but thank you Ada.” Skyla responded politely back.

“Understood, Milady.” The maid did a short bow, before stepping backwards with the hat neatly tucked into her arms.

At this gesture, a set of whispers blew through parts of the crowd.

“So it’s really true that she’s become a Ragnvindr now…”

“Hearing it was one thing, but seeing it really is another thing.”

“To be the younger sibling of the Captain and Dawn Winery Master, how lucky-”

“Um hmph!” An elder’s voice pierced through the chorus of voices, settling down the conversations in the crowd. “Come now dear, tis a joyous occasion for you to have fully recovered.”

Grandpa Opa stepped forward with his cane in hand, breaking the uncomfortable atmosphere that had settled over.  “Hi Sky, how’s our little girl doing?”

“I’m doing great, thank you all for the get-well gifts. I’m feeling much better now. The Church as well as the family doctor gave me the go to freely roam around.” Skyla smiled warmly, giving him a hug in return.

Grandpa Opa chuckled, pinching her lightly on the cheek and stepping back. “Welcome back, dear. You don’t know how many of us were awaiting your return.”

Some of the children gave way for the elder to loop his arm around Skyla’s, but chose to stay close by her presence.

For the next hour or two as they walked through the town, it was a rush of emotions and adrenaline.

“Skyla darling! You’re here! I’ve got some of your favorite snacks ready to go.”

“Floral Wreaths always looked good on you darling. Take one, actually two.”

“Ah, take this nearly made sword. Your brothers coordinated with me on its weight distribution. This claymore, bow and shield as well. All custom made.”

“Sky, sky! Here are some candies my parents and I made for you!”

“Take these butterflies dearie, I’m sure they’ve been great for your greenhouse garden.”

“A carrier pigeon! This one is the prettiest, for a pretty lady such as you.”

“Smoothies on the house! And in a to-go reusable container for future uses!”

To say Skyla was overwhelmed was an understatement. She watched the Dawn Winery servants help carry the steady increase of gifts that landed in her arms.

Trinkets, jewelry, clothes, food, household items, ornaments, room decorations, etc.

To be honest, it felt like she was part of a moving banquet with how the city folks were guiding her on a specific path while showering her with all sorts of gifts.

She looked at Diluc in disbelief, wondering how much of this was planned by him and Kaeya.

As soon as their eyes met in the sea of people, his eyes softened and he gave a small smile as he silently mouthed a set of words.

‘You are loved.’

And it took all of her willpower to not crumble into a million pieces right then and there.

“Milady, please keep walking, there are others waiting for you.” Ada quietly whispered, gently nudging her master along.

“O-Of course,” Skyla hurriedly sped up her pace with the folks around her so that they wouldn’t notice anything was off.

S-She was most definitely not tearing up.

Nope.

Not at all.

Skyal took a sharp breath in, trying to hold in all the rolling emotions swirling around her chest as countless others kept piling on with the gifts.

What did she do to deserve them and their kindness?

Swallowing hard, she put up a bright smile while being ushered from place to place within the walls of Mondstadt.

That is until…

“Ah, there you are. Took you long enough.”

Skyla’s eyes went wide as they arrived at a familiar looking Knights Headquarters and its patio was all set up for an outdoor party. The people that trailed behind her didn’t seem to be phrased by this development, seamlessly transitioning from the mini parade to the lively party setting.

“What is all this?” She turned to Kaeya for an explanation with a raised eyebrow. “You told me today was just going to be a normal outing. This is definitely not normal…”

Kaeya smirked slightly, placing his hand on top of her head. “A welcome back to Mondstadt and…”

“BIG SISTER!”

Skyla nearly got knocked back as Klee practically leaped into her arms out of nowhere.

“Whoa there, Klee. She may be fully recovered, but we should still be careful and treat her as gently as possible.” Albedo warned as he offered to take his sister from Skyla’s arms.

The little youngster whined as she buried herself further into Skyla’s arms and clung on even harder.

“Klee, you might want to be on the gentler side. I’m happy that Sky’s back as well, but we must take caution too.” Sucrose followed up, her forehead crinkled up in worry alongside Albedo.

“Lupical still not okay?”

Skyla nearly jumped in place to suddenly see Razor at her side, which sent the boy into a panic the moment he saw her in distress.

“Oh my dear little wolfie,” Lisa chipped in and gave him a reassuring head pat. “Skyla’s all better now, don’t you worry. We just want to have her take it easy for now.”

“Really?” Razor’s eyes shone with worry and hesitance, leaving Skyla at an impasse before ultimately deciding to pull him into a hug as well.

“What’s with all the commotion and teary eyes here? With the way that things currently stand, it looks as though we’re doing a farewell party instead of a welcome ceremony.” Eula curtly said as she walked up to the group with a frown.

“Eula, I think Klee and Razor just need a little bit of reassurance.” Amber said with her hands on her hips. “And honestly, I think I need one too. The last month was so chaotic and I barely got to see you.”

“Sky, I’m going to hug you after those two are done. And don’t you dare run away from it!” Amber pouted a bit.

“And I would like to be the third if that’s alright.”

“Jean!” Skyla smiled brightly at the Acting Grandmaster and the deaconess walking up together. “It’s been a while since I last saw you.”

“Barbara’s told me a great deal about the progress of your health, but it is good to see it with my own eyes.” Jean scanned the young adventurer from head to toe in search of injuries before letting out a sigh of relief.

“Barbara’s done an amazing job taking care of me,” Skyla gave one last quick hug to Razor and handed over Klee to Albedo. “You’re incredibly lucky to have such an amazing and talented sister.”

“Awww, you don’t need to say such a thing.” Barbara stole a quick hug from the adventurer, the deaconess melting the moment she was able to relax into her friend’s arms. “I’m just glad you were able to recover and get back on your feet.”

Skyla chuckled. “With the way you and Rosaria were constantly hovering over me? How could I not recover? Speaking of Rosie, is she here too?”

“Yeah, she’s just getting scolded by Sister Victoria at the moment.” Barbara directed their attention to a table on the outskirts of the patio.

Rosaria seemed to notice their stares, looking back momentarily and for a split second locked eyes with the young adventurer. She grunted briefly, then threw a small wave at Skyla as Sister Victoria continued on with the scolding session.

Noelle seemed to have noticed the commotion and joined into the conversation, trying to placate Sister Victoria to no avail.

“Looks like they are a bit occupied at the moment,” Lisa tilted her head to the side.

It was at that moment that they heard someone clear their throat and found that Diluc had joined the conversation.

“Pardon for the interruption, but we’ll need to do the announcement soon while we still have everyone here.” Diluc politely intervened, offering his right arm for Skyla to loop around.

She looked confusingly at the gesture, but did so nevertheless and seamlessly linked up her left arm with his right.

“Ah, so it's finally time.” Kaeya giggled brightly with anticipation brimming in his eyes as he walked alongside them to the stone staircase leading up to the Knights Headquarters front doors.

Like the esteemed gentlemen he presented to the public, he offered out his left hand to her.

Wordlessly, she placed her right hand on top of his, not knowing what was fully in store but going along with whatever plan seemed to have been formulated by the boys.

Some people in the crowd seemed to have noticed their movement though, her eyes hot on her back as Kaeya held their hands relatively high enough for everyone to see as they traversed the patio and up to the top of the stairs.

Skyla did a quick glance of the crowd and found that there were also some nobility invited to this party as well, particularly scrutinizing the trio’s movements.

Though she supposed that was normal.

Diluc and Kaeya were brilliant…dazzling…

They shone as the brightest and most coveted jewels of Mondstadt.

Jewels that now placed their entire focus on her.

Jewels that picked up a mere orphan and tried everything to shield her from harm.

Jewels that picked up a mere glass pebble to join them.

Sure, she had become polished by the sands of time and rough water currents of life.

But she was still just a pebble at the end of the day

A

Shiny.

Glassy.

Pebble.

How could she stand next to them? Proud and tall?

Suddenly, a small squeeze on her right hand brought her back to reality.

Kaeya was no longer holding it high for the world to see, but their hands were still linked as they stood on the top of the stairs.

He shone a bright and encouraging smile to her.

Ah, shoot. Were my thoughts too transparent? Did anyone else in the crowd notice?

As panic started to settle in, she felt Kaeya squeeze their hands two times in succession.

‘It is ok’

‘It is alright’

‘We will take care of everything’

‘You can count on us’

Diluc was then given a wine glass and spoon from a nearby Dawn Winery servant, gently tapping the spoon to the wine glass to gain everyone’s attention.

“Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for coming to this get-together celebrating Skyla’s full recovery.” Diluc’s voice reverberated throughout the patio.

Kaeya then stepped forward, “I’m sure the majority of you all have already heard of the following announcement by word of mouth, but we’ll like to make an official announcement today in light of Skyla’s full recovery.”

“Years ago, Skyla’s adoptive older sister, Petra Silva, the other half of the once widely known ‘Forest Sisters’ amongst Mondstadt’s Adventurer Guild, sadly passed away due to illness.” Diluc solemnly voiced out. “Unbeknownst to the public and Skyla, prior to Petra’s passing, it was amicably decided that she would entrust her younger sister’s safety to Kaeya and me.”

“It was a painful time, we were simply acquaintances to Sky. So back then we had simply decided to help you from afar.” Diluc turned to Skyla with a heavy expression. “Before we knew it, you had already decided to go beyond the walls of Mondstadt. On a journey to help others and prevent similar tragedies that were bestowed on your elder sister.”

Diluc looked at Skyla with remorse. “We should have been more forward and forthcoming about the circumstances. By the time we realized our mistake and you had returned to Mondstadt, you were already grown up.”

“And you ended up being the one helping us all the time,” Kaeya tagged in while chuckling awkwardly. “In the Cathedral, in the Orphanage and in the Knights of Favonius.”

“Before we knew it, you were intertwined with our lives - whether or not it was paperwork, monster subjugation or regular everyday mundane stuff like hanging out for lunch.” Kaeya’ eye twinkled as he began swinging their linked hands a bit.

Diluc followed up with his own quote. “And the same can be said for my end, your assistance in the Dawn Winery, your brilliance at Angel Share with customers and your paperwork help at the Wine Guild. You have become an irreplaceable person in our lives.”

“I think your sister knew even back then, that as much as we would protect you in her stead, you would be able to help us just as much.” Diluc raised his glass slightly. “And I’m grateful to have met you in this lifetime.”

“From this day forward, with everyone here as a witness, let it be known that Skyla Rowan is the newest member of the Ragnvindr Clan.” Diluc raised his glass to the air. “A toast to Kaeya and I’s newest adopted family member, our dear younger sister, Skyla Rowan! Cheers!”

“Prost!”

“Cheers!”

“As I mentioned to you before, as the current head of this household, I grant you the surname of Ragnvindr.” Diluc linked his free hand with Skyla, giving a reassuring squeeze. “But I also respect your decision of retaining your birth name and honoring Petra, who has been a dear friend of mine.”

“But know this - from this moment onward you have the freedom to utilize that surname at any point of time. Because in my heart, the surname does not matter, at the end of the day - you are family . And you are my precious younger sister and I’ll make sure to treasure you as much as Petra did.” Diluc declared loudly and proudly.

Cheers and clapping were heard from the crowd, some of their friends tearing up at the heartfelt speech.

“To the new Lady of the Dawn Winery!” Kaeya raised his glass as well, spurring the crowd onward. “And the newest sister of the Cavalry Captain!”

“To Lady Skyla!”

Abruptly, all the wind chimes in the area chimed a new melody into the already festive atmosphere and a sea of dandelion seeds floated onto the patio area.

“It’s the Anemo Archon!”

“They must approve the new arrangement!”

“Wow! To have our Archon’s blessings! This is a historic day!”

“Bravo! To the newest Ragnvindr!”

“To the newest Ragnvindr! Prost!”

Skyla couldn’t help but smile at the people’s newfound enthusiasm, even the nobles that looked unsure before were now fascinated by the turn of events.

Her eyes trailed over to a certain bard happily kicking his feet in the air while sitting on the concrete railings that overlooked the rest of the city.

Kaeya grinned widely as well, happily ruffling his sister’s neatly made hair. “Venti, would you mind kicking off this celebration with your brand new song to thank our dear Anemo Archon?”

“But of course! Only the finest music for our dear Skyla!” Venti summoned his harp and winked at the girl before singing in tune with the wind chimes and taking center stage at the event. “To the newest Ragnvindr! Prost!”

Skyla sighed at the sight, nervous chills running all over her body.

Ah, so it's really started huh? This grand performance of being a Ragnvindr.

Well…shit.

Foodcrumbs/Author Note:

So one thing of note I want to say is to pay close attention to Skyla’s dressing style throughout the entire act 2 especially ^-^ there will be a lot of symbolism tied to that and how it changes over time, reflecting her state of mind and the various influences on her.

But basically from act 2 onward I’m hoping you’ll be able to see her growth parallel her outfit style.

In this chapter, I chose the rose template and a generally red outfit, but fits/tinges of blue as hair accessories.

I’m not sure if what I’m saying makes sense 😅 but basically for this chapter it's almost like she’s “painted red” or rather her own personal self is being ‘overwritten’ by the signature red of the Ragnvindr clan - seeing how their signature red hair is passed down from generation to generation.

As for why there are only spots of blue, I personally see it as spots of Kaeya’s influence, because he’s still an Alberich. But they decided to bestow her the Ragnvindr name because of the significance of the clan in Mondstadt’s history and to utilize it as a means of protection for her.

But yes, something to consider is, in their(Diluc & Kaeya’s) attempt to bring her under their wings of protection & under the Ragnvindr Clan’s protection - her previous self image is completely overwritten/overshadowing what she once had/was.

You can see that her previous color palette of white & black -> referencing Ch76 character wiki:

For example, if you looked at her original outfit. Skyla had a tendency to wear a white blouse that allowed for lots of arm movement and then a loose coat/hoodie over it.

In my opinion, as an adventurer, she wanted an outfit that was fit for combat and allowed her as much movement as possible.

Chapter 12 - The girl wore a sleeveless white blouse, black workout hoodie, knee-high boots and brown shorts accompanied by black leggings.

Chapter 6 - Half of the Tarven seemed to be surprised at the arrival of the young adventurer, perhaps because her height made her appear as if she was a young teenager in a bar. She was wearing her casual adventurer get up: Knee-high boots, brown shorts accompanied by black leggings, and a hooded jacket over a pale blouse.

Her knee-high boots were inspired by Amber’s outfit. Brown shorts were inspired from Bennet’s outfit. And I gave her leggings because I figured she wanted something that covered her legs in the wilderness for her adventuring lifestyle. But also because I thought it would look good 😅

The hooded jacket originated from the first OC template, but later I decided to incorporate it as a means of showing that Skyla’s dream abilities and witnessing other worlds influenced her clothing style. Specifically, it introduced ‘modern-like’ clothing to her fashion style because she was used to seeing it in her dreams. If you notice, this hooded jacket does not really match the rest of Mondstadt’s fashion style.

Interviewer: Interesting, was there any additional reasoning to her outfit choice? Like often at school we learn that coloring in a book scene is important. For example, ‘the curtains are blue because the character is feeling sad.’

Author: Yes. Originally I did think of giving her a red outfit because back in 1.2 update when genshin was still young, a lot of the Pyro characters had splashes of red in some kind on them. Diluc with his hair and gem, Amber with the entire outfit, Xiangling’s red highlights on her outfit. I had originally planned on following this pattern, but ultimately decided against it when reading commentary on it 😅

Also Bennet did not have as much red on his outfit, he was the exception at the time.

But ultimately I decided to go with color schemes that had symbolic meaning. If you read the manga (https://genshin.hoyoverse.com/en/manga) and also walk around the city of Mondstadt, you notice that the NPC characters of Mondstadt had a general ‘format’ of sorts.

For example, a lot of them had light brown hair and monotone clothing. Often black and white. I believe this was done for simplicity's sake for the most part, but also for general plot reasons.

If you think about our stories or anime or comics, a lot of times the protagonists had color schemes that are bright or they stand out in some sort of way. We the audience know who the protagonists are automatically by how their colors stand out against everyone else.

When we step into Mondstadt, Diluc has bright red hair & a noble outfit, Kaeya has blue hair and a flashy peacock outfit, Amber’s outfit is bright red from head to toe, Jean has turquoise palettes on her outfit as does Venti. We the audience know who are playable characters judging by their fashion colors, style, hair and being a Vision bearer.

But when we are introduced to Skyla in this story. She is the complete opposite. She has a dull Vision that she conceals. Her hair color is light brown , very much like the NPCs of Mondstadt, her colors are monochrome for the most part. She has a white blouse, a black hoodie jacket, black leggings, brown shorts, brown/black knee high boots. Her feather hair clip is white and hair ties are black.

She is meant to blend in with the background and the background characters . She was designed to look like a NPC . I did this deliberately. This is a reflection of her nature, her personality and her way of thinking.

On a side note the black and white layering in her outfit also reflects her philosophy - No one is truly just black or white, only shades of gray.

‘No one is truly just good or bad.’

There is not just right or wrong, everyone’s morals are shades of gray.

Even with an outfit change, we see once again that it's the colors of white or dull brown . (White Poncho during Dragonspine and Brown sweater when she meets Lumine after the Dragonspine incident) As if she was blending in with nature .

We see continuously throughout the story that other characters have noted this as well, that Skyla has a lack of self-identity, as though she is being eroded by everything or everyone else. She doesn’t think of herself as important and tries to help others through ‘behind the scenes.’ Never fully taking credit for her work.

But here is another thing to note. As the story progresses, colors start appearing on her. Her Vision is now Pyro red, her hair now has multiple color streaks of red, turquoise, gold. As she interacts with our main characters more, Diluc, Kaeya, Lumine -> she is slowly and steadily gaining a sense of self identity. Because these people are pushing to get to know the ‘real her.’

She is no longer ‘just a character’ in the story anymore. She is now ‘a character’ in the story. One that is forging her own future.

Alrighty! Back to regular foodcrumbs!

(Foodcrumb#1)

“Do we really have to do this?” Skyla sighed heavily, looking out through the carriage window.

“It’s a performance, remember? Until things settle down.” Diluc reassured from the seat across from her.

“I hate performances…” Skyla pouted slightly, grumbling underneath her breath.

….

This is an important part of the performance the trio are putting up here. Skyla is not used to the noble life and certainly not as one of the 3 big families of Mondstadt. We see here that she’s used to just scrolling into Mondstadt, she isn’t used to riding a carriage into Mondstadt.

The carriage is a symbol of status, power, wealth.

And we see that out of instinct she just wants to leave the carriage regularly. But Diluc reminds her subtly that to establish her position as a Ragnvindr and as a noble lady, she’s to be escorted down from a carriage.

Not to mention it is DILUC that is doing it, not just a regular servant or worker. This places the power and status onto her as someone that makes the head of the family work FOR HER and is a show of affection/doting on her.

“Don’t worry about anything. You’re always been a good actress, I’m sure you’ll do well.”

“But I feel like a fraud…an imposter.”

“You are our sister, a Ragnvindr, and no one can tell you otherwise.”

I think it’s pretty obvious which of the brothers said the first sentence, but its hinted here by the tone that it’s Kaeya saying this to her. Skyla’s replying to him. And then Diluc is the one that replying to Skyla as in my belief Kaeya doesn’t fully see himself as a Ragnvindr.

So I’m not sure if its obvious here,  but the one who blew her hat away was Venti LOLLLLL

There are two reasons why this happens. One is that Venti was trying to make it easier for the crowd to recognize Skyla, by taking away her hat.

The second reason is due to the Pratfall Effect, it’s something psychologists found out a while back:

https://www.einsteinmarketer.com/pratfall-effect-marketing/#What_is_the_Pratfall_Effect

What is the Pratfall Effect?

The pratfall effect explains that when we see somebody that we hold in high esteem make a mistake or error, they appear even more likeable.

Equally, when we see somebody that we don’t hold in high esteem make an error or mistake, we like them even less.

The pratfall effect can be transferred over into brands who occasionally make mistakes, or sell products that aren’t deemed perfect.

Skyla was someone who was already held in high regard by the populace of Mondstadt, and suddenly she’s elevated even further up by her new status as a Ragnvindr. This makes her appear even farther away, distant from the average person compared to before.

But the moment she makes this mistake/blunder and trips on the way down, she appears more humane, more human like, more like them and someone relatable and someone’s their familiar with.

It’s like, oh she’s a Ragnvindr, but she’s stll the same Skyla we known all along.

And her blunder is instead seen as something cute, adorable and someone they want to protect instead of someone to reverend.

They want to play with Dr. Edith at Windrise but are trying to get away from Mack, a Knight of Favonius who is keeping watch over them wherever they go. Following a certain dialogue branch for the first time gives the player four Fish.

This was a deliberate move on Ada’s part, reestablishing Skyla’s new status again

Grandpa Opa is an OC from Ch70 that comforted Kaeya over Skyla’s death and coma status (https://archiveofourown.info/works/31631882/chapters/128934073)

He’s here to remind them that even though she’s a noble now, she’s still the person they’ve knew and to treat her with respect as a person instead of a spectacle

(Foodcrumb#4)

For the patio scene, I tried to include as many playable Mondstadt characters as possible but also tried to keep it realistic because it felt weird if everyone was there.

Also there are some relationships we don’t fully know the extent of. For example DIona and Fischl, we haven’t really seen in this story interact with Skyla yet. I do have some voicelines in mind for Skyla’s About Fischl, and they are aware of each other and are friends. But since it’s not in the story yet any official interactions between them to the audience, I thought it would be better if I left their interaction for a future onscreen

(Foodcrumb#5)

I think overall the last scene was the most difficult part of this chapter

Mostly because it was a lot of ‘performing’. For example the way that Diluc and Kaeya linked themselves up with Skyla while walking up to the staircase, they side by side with her in order to establish that THEY are the ones giving her authority, her status, her position in society.

And that if anyone tries to harm her, they will have to go through THEM in the future.

With the hand squeezes part, I always imagined it as a sibling thing where I’ve heard a lot of times that with small gestures, particularly repeated ones, its almost like a secret messaging system between siblings. Like a glance or a specific action tends to mean or generally mean a certain phrase or it could just be their way of reassuring each other silently when under the gaze of others.

XD I’ve heard it happens often between siblings when being scolded under parents

In this case, it’s more like silently reassuring Skyla while under the gazes of the population

And finally the speeches that Diluc and Kaeya say are very carefully worded, it took me a couple of times to decide what should be said. Ultimately it was a way of establishing the ‘public story’ on why they were so close with Skyla, how their relationship formed, is it platonic or romantic relationship. Why did they care so much about her? And why is she ‘part’ of the family but didn’t have a last name change? B

But they had to do all of the above in a positive, professional controlled fashion to not stir up more rumors and to properly establish her position in Mondstadt society now

so some of you guys may have noticed that their speeches were a little incorrect or 'embellished' or 'flowery' - yes, that is true, comparing act 1 to this chapter will reveal that. but it was part of the trio's plan in putting up a good public image. not to say they dont care about skyla, they do, but XD knowing the boys, they usually aren't this forthcoming with their feelings

“Prost!”

https://blog.fluent-forever.com/cheers-in-german/

Easily the most common way of saying cheers in German, prost is an expression that means “to life” or “to health.” (It also rhymes with toast!)

Chapter 5: Ineedtobeperfect

Summary:

I need to be perfect.

Chapter Text

“Milady, here is the finances breakdown.”

“Lady Skyla, this is the list of regular suppliers, their appointments, past trends and transactions.”

“Milady, I will be explaining the raw materials and machinery used for this winemaking process.”

“Lady Skyla, here is the documentation related to the wine guild’s operations.”

The adventurer groaned at her desk, clutching her hair tightly before burying her face into her arms to seal her mind away from the world.

Ever since the day of her announcement into the Ragnvindr Clan and appointment as Lady of the Dawn Winery, she was getting immersed left and right into all sorts of shenanigans.

Well, not really shenanigans.

Mostly just getting thrusted into every nook and cranny that the Dawn Winery was involved in.

It made sense logically since she was now a co-master of the Dawn Winery and her now brother was the head of the household.

Compared to when she was stuck indoors for a month, the speed of her nobility education was now accelerated.

Diluc had expressed to her beforehand that he wanted to give her a bit more time to better prepare for her new status, title and role in society but time was of the essence.

The longer they kept her away from the public’s eye, the more questions would be brought up and rumors proliferated.

Not to mention I was getting antsy staying indoors all the time.

But considering that she was officially announced to be a part of the Ragnvindr Clan and technically one of the heads of the family…

There was a LOTTTT of work to be done now and a need to bring her up to speed.

So she was given crash courses of everything needed to become the ‘perfect’ Lady of the Dawn Winery.

All of the logistics, suppliers, business partners, business connections, etc.

It was poured down onto her like a waterfall.

She’s been told so far that she’s a fast learner and picking up things relatively quickly, but she can’t tell if they are genuine or they’re just saying that because she’s a Ragnvindr - the head of the household.

Maids at her beckon and call-

Servants that immediately pause their work to give a small bow as a sign of respect-

Whispers amongst the workers-

Thoughts, conversations and connections that she once shared with the workers of Dawn Winery…

Although she knew the majority of the maids and servants by name, it felt like the bonds she forged in the past with them had become useless now.

Warm gazes, laughter and jokes…

Their stares were now cold, distant and most importantly…‘professional.’

That’s alright.

It’s normal.

I’m their boss now.

It makes sense.

Her shoulders slumped at the drastic changes, a heaviness weighing down on her chest.

Even if she did gain the status, power and wealth of a Ragnvindr-

Was it worth it to lose the bonds she took so long to forge?

Skyla bit down on her lower lip, chewing it as a subtle sadness permeated through her body.

She missed being able to casually talk with the workers, striking random conversations, gossiping about the latest fashions and perfumes, joining them in the kitchen and experimenting on new recipes.

She yearned to be able to do random hugs and receive them in return. Now she had to keep them at arm's length and they were also probably warned by Diluc to do the same in order to establish her ‘authority’.

Skyla frowned deeply, slumping further onto her wooden desk.

Then there were the half dozen bodyguards Diluc and Kaeya assigned to her.

Normal people probably wouldn’t notice their presence, but for her?

As someone that’s trained herself extensively as a solo adventurer, she could feel their presence lingering constantly in the background.

To Skyla, it was like having someone constantly breathing down on the back of her neck, scrutinizing her every move.

She puffed up her cheeks in frustration as she recalled the conversation she had with her brothers.

“We’re not saying that you’re unable to protect yourself,” Diluc pleaded with her gently.

Kaeya let out a huff as he folded his arms. “That is exactly what happened though when you think about it.”

“You’re not helping our case, Kaeya.” Diluc glared right back .

It wasn’t like she willingly got killed and she certainly didn’t “underestimate” them as Kaeya stated.

She knew what she was handling, she just happened to get overpowered that ‘one time.’

“Yes and that ‘one time’ cost your life,” Kaeya pressed their case onward. “So after you’re done recuperating, we’ll be having additional bodyguards and additional training sessions for you. If all things go well, perhaps we’ll decrease the number of bodyguards we have around you.”

“Perhaps?” Skyla raised an eyebrow. “ PERHAPS?!

“I’m not a child,” She argued back.

“You’re literally 2 years younger than us, I say that’s plenty of age difference.” Kaeya folded his arms.

“Considering I literally live a double life in my dreams, I say that argument is invalid. I have more knowledge in my head than the two of you combined.”

“Yet you couldn’t use that pretty little head of yours to prevent yourself from dying.” Kaeya chided.

“I did!” She immediately stammered back.

“This is going nowhere.” Kaeya huffed as he started walking away. “Our decision is final.”

“Kaeya! Ugh!” Skyla turned to her eldest brother with pleading eyes.

The redhead man simply sighed, massaging the top of his head.“This is for your own good, Sky.”

Clink!

Slyla looked up from her buried arms to see a steaming cup of tea on top of a saucer plate. She eyed the beautiful rose decorations etched into the porcelain teacup, part of her still in disbelief that this was now part of her everyday life.

“It’s chamomile tea,” Ada responded after seeing that Skyla had been silently staring at the cup.

“Ah.”

Chamomile Tea, known for reducing anxiety, promoting sleep, and relaxing people.

Had I really been looking that anxious?

She carefully took a sip of the tea, the edges of her mouth instantly perking up to a small smile as she looked up to where her personal maid stood. “Warm milk and honey?”

“And 10 minute steep time, just the way you like it milady.” Ada responded accordingly, a slight playfulness to her step as she fetched a plate of lavender lemon shortbread and placed it before her master.

There seemed to be a faint smile on Ada’s face as Skyla happily chowed down the snacks, posture returning to normal and muscles no longer as tense.

It was rather interesting to see a different expression on her maid’s face, considering that Ada usually kept a neutral look majority of the time.

Skyla had heard whispers here and there about how Ada was a complete contrast of her master. She couldn’t help but wonder if it was difficult for Ada to suddenly have such a master suddenly thrusted upon her.

Someone inexperienced, naive and the complete opposite of ‘nobility.’

“Milady, you’ve finished your assignments for the day and also have completed your lessons. I believe you can relax a bit instead of taking on extra work.” Ada hummed softly, refilling the cup of tea Skyla just finished off.

“I’m behind though…I don’t think that’s such a good idea.”

“Master Diluc and Master Kaeya have stressed that it is also important to rest to properly retain newly acquired knowledge.” Ada thoughtfully followed up. “Perhaps visit the orphanage? The children will be elastic to hear from you again, the last time they saw you was at the announcement ceremony.”

“Nah,” Skyla quickly coughed, trying to cover up her slip up. She straightened up, smoothing out her voice and politely cleared her throat. “I mean, perhaps next time.”

“Would you like to tend to the greenhouse instead? I believe you’re making progress on the garden in addition to your regular Academia research.”

“I’ll tend to the garden at another feasible occasion.” Skyla shuffled in her seat, wondering if she answered back correctly in the right manner.

Whether its business or in the world of nobility, sometimes instead of directly saying ‘no,’ it was preferred to just deflect or defer. It was deemed more polite and respectful to the other party.

Surprisingly, Ada’s face became perplexed, her lips pressing into a small frown and her hands tightening together ever so slightly. She paused in thought, studying Skyla with intense scrutiny.

Silence took over as the two ended up in a staring contest of sorts.

Ada seemingly tried to come up with a rebuttal, while Skyla merely took the opportunity to observe her personal maid some more.

Straight back, hair tucked neatly behind ears and a nearly emotionless face that would only produce reactions every so often.

Well, usually in the most exasperated of situations.

Skyla nearly chuckled at the sight before her. If cartoons were real, she was sure Ada had fumes appear at the top of her head.

It was rather amusing.

Perhaps it was Skyla’s mischievous side that had been stirring up from within this entire time.

“Milady-”

“Let’s go.”

“Hm?”

“We’ll go walking around the city, that should be enough of a mundane activity to satisfy those two, right?”

“Uh-Um, yes, I think Master Diluc and Master Kaeya would be very pleased about that. Of course, I’ll also go get your parasol and outdoor streetwear prepared.”

“No need, I’ll just go in this outfit.”

“But Milady, it is imperative that we-”

“Establish my authority?”

“...”

“But if I wear too much fancy stuff 24/7, won’t it look worse down the line when I change to more comfortable clothing? And…I don’t think we need that.”

“Milady, still-”

“Alright, alright. We can make some minor adjustments here and there. Let’s just do hair ornaments and accessories for now, that's good?”

“Of course, Milady.”

“Oh come on now, old timer. I saw the recent sales, business seems to be booming lately - can’t you give me a bit more leeway?” Skyla pleaded with puppy eyes.

“Oh sweetie, times and circumstances have changed quite a bit since the last time we saw you.” Kaufman’s eyes twinkled with a bit of mischief.

Skyla silently bit her tongue, her mind raging with a thousand thoughts about how this was the fifth merchant that tried exponentially raising sale prices with her.

What? Just because she was Diluc’s sister now, she’s rich?!

That’s the Dawn Winery’s money! Not hers!

Well, technically yes, she has a large share of it.

And Diluc had shown her both the percentage and portion of family funds that he delegated to her.

Which, she wasn’t going to lie, had an astronomical amount of digits than what she was used to.

And she had to triple check with Diluc before he realized he forgot to give her the list of assets he transferred over to her ownership.

Which was also a huge surprise.

But it wasn’t like she was going to just squander them away all of a sudden.

It wasn't her money and assets per say.

Well legally it was hers now.

But mentally? Emotionally?

It just didn’t feel real.

Almost like a fragile facade that could break any second.

Sure she’s dealt with money and assets before as a merchant herself, profited enough that she could live relatively comfortably for a few months with her passive income alone.

But now?

Now it was different.

More money and assets that she could count, a thousand plus business contacts new and old, as well as a reputation to uphold.

In the past, if she messed up at something or failed terribly- that was on her.

Solely her .

Her reputation alone would be tainted.

And she didn’t care as much if it ended that way. She could always just find a way to bounce back.

But now?

She was Diluc and Kaeya’s sister.

Having her rep tarnished was tarnishing theirs , tarnishing the Dawn Winery’s, the workers associated with the family business.

The Wine Guild.

The Knights of Favonius.

So many more factors at play.

And she was scared

Scared to let them down.

So that’s why she needed to be ‘perfect.’

The ‘perfect’ lady, the ‘perfect’ noble, the ‘perfect’ sister.

She can’t let them down.

She can’t.

Shecan’tshecan’tshecan’t.

So much more was at stake.

She has to do this right.

To put up the perfect image.

To say the right things.

To do the right gestures.

Watch tone, infliction of speech, enunciation of words.

Confidence. Poise.

A small smile.

But not too wide.

Polite.

Yet assertive.

“Mister Kaufman, I trust that we’ve maintained a relatively stable business partnership the last couple of months.”

Smile. Just a little bit more.

“Based on that I thought that being forthcoming and loyal was a staple of your mercantile moto,” Skyla tilted her head to the side as she shifted the weight of her legs. “I’m disappointed that legacy is no longer being held today to long standing returning customers.”

Kaufman chuckled a bit, clasping his hands together. “Business is business Miss-I mean, Lady Skyla. We just keep moving forward along the changing tides and waves of occurrences that happen in the market.”

He kept up his snide smile. “I’m sure that it’s understandable considering your new circumstances, you’ll be able to match this new…starting market price that I currently have going on.”

“I see…” Skyla playfully folded her arms, hugging them close to her chest and tapping her fingers against her chin. She pretended to go deep into thought about paying the hefty raise in price.

Whattodo?Whattodo?Whattodo?

Willmyusualtacticwork?

Whatifitdoesn’t?

He’llseerightthroughme.

Smile.

S m i l e.

SMILE.

Look composed, level-headed, unperturbed.

Allude confidence to reduce the pressure.

She sighed heavily out loud on purpose. “Well, that’s really such a shame with this rise in price. I suppose we really must go along with the changing times and take into consideration new circumstances that have come into play.”

Kaufman brightened up, a grin broadening across his expression. “Yes, yes, of course Miss-I mean Lady Skyla. I’m glad to hear that you’re understanding our new price range. Thank you for your cooperation in these new circumstances.”

“One shouldn’t fight back against these changing tides, but rather ride alongside it.” She raised her hands and went for a handshake, to which Kaufman happily took.

“I see then-“

“Mister Kaufman, it has been a brilliant last couple of months with our herbal partnership. I wish you opportune health in general and in your medicinal herb specialties.” Skyla continued heftily shaking his hands. “I believe with your leadership and entrepreneurial skills, your endeavors will showcase splendid results.”

Kaufman’s expression quickly paled at the implication of the words. “W-Wait…Lady Skyla-“

“New times and new circumstances bring about new viewpoints,” Skyla eloquently recited poetically out loud. “New horizons and growth with new business opportunities and new business partners. Tis a joyous occasion for our respective businesses and learning to flourish in new environments.”

“Lady Skyla, perhaps-“

“My contacts from abroad will be excited to hear about the newest collaborations. Oh yes, and Diluc too.” Skyla hummed softly. “He did recently introduce me to longtime vendors of the Dawn Winery. Perhaps both our products will be side by side in stores, tis a grand day indeed.”

“Lady Skyla, new collaborations are fine but they also miss the essence of previous collaborators that are familiar with each other.” Kaufman nervously interrupted.

“Oh I’m sure it’ll be fine, they’ve worked with the family business for a while, they know the Ragnvindr clan well.” Skyla waved her hand flimsily. “Luc says it's a good learning experience and that since I already have a good baseline I’ll get along swimmingly with them.”

“I’m sure the both of us will enjoy this new found independence and freedom with our respective assets.” Skyla adjusted the sleeve cuffs of her red suit and then turned around to leave. “Once again, Mister Kaufman, I wish you prosperity and good ventures in your future.”

“Lady Skyla! Wait, perhaps there was a misunderstanding in my wording just now!” Kaufman reached out as he rushed forward to catch her sleeve. “I’m sure we can negotiate terms once more, just-”

She quickly side-stepped, avoiding his grab and continued walking away to the destination she had in mind. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Ada following right behind her and glaring at the merchant with displeasure.

Any attempt of Kaufman trying to catch up with Skyla’s fast-paced walking was met with Ada putting herself in between the merchant and her master.

I suppose having a guard or personal maid in these cases was a good idea.

Did Diluc and Kaeya foresee this happening earlier? That’s why they insisted she never walk in Mondstadt alone?

“Although I’ll be busier these days due to my new role in the Dawn Winery, I look forward to seeing you as a fellow citizen on the streets of Mondstadt.” Skyla nonchalantly said as she kept her stride.

“L-Lady Skyla, I beg of you to reconsider. We can still make things work! I’ll lower the herbal price down by 75% from what I suggested earlier.”

Skyla let out a low grunt in acknowledgement, not slowing down her pace at all. “As homage to our past business partnership, should you have any additional commentary, please go to the Dawn Winery and I’m sure Adelinde can facilitate further discussions.”

“W-What about our original price? I’m sure I can make accommodations! We can even sign a contract into place. I-I don’t mind making cuts to help maintain our original agreement from months prior.”

A long sigh.

A pause.

Turn around.

Maintain composure.

Smile.

A business smile.

Professional Aura.

Pick up the skirt edges.

Curtsy.

A slight bow.

Noble.

Elegant.

Polite.

“It has been a pleasure working with you all this time, Mister Kafuman.” Skyla reasserted as she happily found herself standing in front of her building destination after much walking. “Should you have more questions or concerns while in the city, you can reach out to Elzer in the Wine Guild.”

With a flourish she turned her back away from him and pushed open through the familiar doorways of the Wine Guild. “Although, based on his schedule, I don’t believe he’s in today. So you’ll have to come another time.”

“Ehe, toodaloo!” She grinned brightly, waving her right hand in the air as she heard Ada step up behind her.

“Wait, what? What is toodaloo?”

“Milady has business at this hour, please refrain from further disruption to her schedule. Good day, Sir Kaufman.”

And with that, Ada closed the Wine Guild doors much to Kaufman’s chagrin.

Skyla let out a long exhale, resting her back on the doors they just closed, nearly sinking to the ground when she heard a set of footsteps.

Immediately she set her hands in front of her dress, clasping them together in a polite professional manner and straightened her back.

“Lady Skyla, a pleasure seeing you here. We weren't expecting you today.”

They are here to see if I’m passing a message or acting as a proxy for the Dawn Winery .

She swallowed the displeasure pooling in her mouth as she examined the young men that just walked down the stairway.

Edi, Ede and Edu - Triplets that had entered the Wine Guild a year back as investors from Liyue.

Their father was Mondstadian and mother was from Liyue so they were familiar with the intricacies of the business world in both countries.

I faintly recalled that their father once worked in the Dawn Winery back with Master Crepus and according to Diluc the man had held Crepus in high esteem.

Whether or not that applies to the next generation was another question.

But from pure observation in months prior, she’s seen that these boys definitely have higher ambitions than their father.

Perhaps they had inherited it from their mother’s heritage, afterall Liyue Harbor was always known to be one of Teyvat’s busiest trading hubs.

“The pleasure is all mine, Sir Edi, Sir Ede and Sir Edu. This was merely an impromptu visit, but I’m glad to have the chance to see familiar faces.” Skyla replied in turn.

“It got a bit stuffy staying indoors all the time at the Dawn Winery Manor, so I had decided to take a scroll around the city and found myself drawn to here.” Skyla chuckled softly, eyes brimming with life to mask the social exhaustion that had been piling up from the earlier merchant talks.

Now, what will you do?

“Is that so?” Ede spoke up with curiosity, a momentary pause in his words. “Then, would you like to join the upcoming meeting starting soon? We’ve missed your presence for the past month, I’m sure the others will be overjoyed to see you doing well enough to join in our discussions once more.”

Skyla awkwardly scratched the back of her head. “I’m afraid I’m still familiarizing myself with all of the Dawn Winery’s operations after losing my memory, so I may not be able to provide the insight needed.”

Give a little.

Bait.

Let them lower their guard.

“But I would still love to sit in and observe the current situation for exposure's sake.” Skyla followed up. “Afterall, I have much to learn from everyone here.”

“Excellent, we’ll go prepare an extra seat.”

Suddenly the doors burst open, revealing a frazzled Elzer with his hair all over the place and sweating profusely.

“I made it! Looks like I can join the meeting after all.” Elzer took in heaps of breaths, adjusting his outfit before doing a double take at the people standing at the entrance. “M-Milady?! I-I didn’t know you were paying a visit here today.”

He flipped through the papers clutched to his chest. “I don’t believe Master Diluc mentioned that in your itinerary to me.”

“Oh no, I just came here in my free time.” Skyla quickly reassured. “Ada, Adelinde and the others were saying that I was being cooped up indoors too much so I strolled my way to the city and roamed randomly.”

“Ah, being studious as ever, choosing this spot to visit. Maser Diluc will be proud.” Elzer’s expression softened. “Well, if you still wish to learn, feel free to sit in on our next meeting, I’ll help guide you on the specifics of everything and notes on this session.”

“Thank you, Elzer. I appreciate it.” Skyla smiled warmly, hand over her heart.

The five of them proceeded to the meeting room, making small talk along the way.

“Milady, would you like me to prepare some Hors d'oeuvres for this reception?” Ada asked subtly once she was able to get a moment with her master.

“Yes, if we could have some, I believe that would help greatly. Thank you,” Skyla whispered back before the meeting fully kicked off.

And as expected for the most part, the meeting is boring and the only thing that’s really keeping her awake is the food that Ada brings around to the 20 person meeting table.

Second being her respect for Elzer and taking note of how he commanded the meeting despite being a last minute addition.

Third being the random business people trying to get her opinion on various topics, her redirecting them without looking like she knew nothing. And those same people also tried to push their opinions ONTO her once they realized she was just going to stick with neutral answers.

Like hello-

Just because I’m Diluc’s sister doesn’t mean he’ll listen to everything I say.

I get it, you think you can influence him through me.

But nope!

Nope, nope, nope, nope.

I came here purely by chance because I was being chased by a merchant that tried to upsell his products and increase the original price of his material goods .

Maybe I shouldn’t try so hard with appearances.

Nope, nope, nope.

I can’t let Diluc and Kaeya down.

I can’t let the Dawn Winery down.

‘You are now the Lady of the Dawn Winery.’

I am the Lady of the Dawn Winery.

And I need to act like it.

Which apparently entailed a different problem that occurred once she left the premises of the Wine Guild after the meeting ended.

“Milady, I understand that perhaps I am unworthy of your hand. But I have firsthand witnessed your generosity towards others, your perseverance amidst difficult circumstances and your intelligence in picking up even the finest details in the business world.” The businessman declared with hearts in his eyes, a flower bouquet at hand. “It would be my greatest honor to be able to court you.”

“Excuse me, what now?”

Skyla silently bit her tongue, her mind raging with a thousand thoughts about how this was the fifth merchant that tried exponentially raising sale prices with her.

Basically because she’s now the Lady of the Dawn Winery, old merchants that used to work with her are trying to raise prices & milk as much money as possible off of her because she’s “rich” now.

They hint because of her new circumstances she can afford the new price.

They go back and forth before she makes him eat his words.

She throws it back at them, saying - yes indeed there are new circumstances which means I can work with other people and hints at saying ‘higher’ quality people.

The merchant quickly realizes this and tries to go back to the old deal, but she rejects it in an attempt to get lower prices milked out of the merchant in the future.

She tells indirectly him that the next time they’ll meet will be fewer because she won’t be business partners with him anymore and that she’s a noble now -specifically the Dawn Winery’s Lady of the House. Therefore she’ll have no need to interact with someone of his caliber/lower standing anymore.

It is her way of saying - hey I know you tried to scam me/milk more money now because of my new status, and I ain’t taking this bullshit.

When he becomes desperate at not only losing this connection but also in fear of Diluc(this is when Skyla mentions that if Kaufman wants to talk to her anymore that she’ll have to do it through a maid or servant first), she politely declines by redirecting Kaufman to Elzer to re emphasize her point that they no longer have that same trusts or loyal business relationship anymore. And that HE squandered it with his business tactic.

She then further drives the nail down Kaufman’s foot, by saying that Elzer is unavailable today and that he’ll have to bring it up later in the future. - Essentially ending the conversation.

“Ehe, toodaloo!” She grinned brightly, waving her right hand in the air as she heard Ada step up behind her.

“Wait, what? What is toodaloo?

“Milady has business at this hour, please refrain from further disruption to her schedule. Good day, Sir Kaufman.”

Skyla uses her otherworldly casual slang here to deliberately confuse Kaufman, but also because she’s had enough.

Ada then steps in to protect her master, by claiming Skyla has a busy schedule when the reality is the opposite.

“Lady Skyla, a pleasure seeing you here. We weren't expecting you today.”

They are here to see if I’m passing a message or acting as a proxy for the Dawn Winery.

She swallowed the displeasure pooling in her mouth as she examined the young men that just walked down the stairway.

Edi, Ede and Edu - Triplets that had entered the Wine Guild a year back as investors from Liyue .

Name meanings:

Ede - Royal; Wealthy Guardian,Guardian of Prosperity

Edi -Healing; Strife for Wealth; Herb

Edu -Wealthy Guard

“Is that so?” Ede spoke up with curiosity, a momentary pause in his words. “Then, would you like to join the upcoming meeting starting soon? We’ve missed your presence for the past month, I’m sure the others will be overjoyed to see you doing well enough to join in our discussions once more.”

Skyla awkwardly scratched the back of her head. “I’m afraid I’m still familiarizing myself with all of the Dawn Winery’s operations after losing my memory, so I may not be able to provide the insight needed.”

Give a little.

Bait.

Let them lower their guard .

“But I would still love to sit in and observe the current situation for exposure's sake.” Skyla followed up. “Afterall, I have much to learn from everyone here.”

“Excellent, we’ll go prepare an extra seat.

The triplets are testing to what degree of involvement Skyla will have in future Wine Guild matters. Skyla tries to show that they are the ones with the knowledge & therefore power in this situation and she’s not a threat to their position.

Author Note:

Howdy folks so life’s been busy, and uhhhh legit just didn’t have time to write. I also picked up wuthering waves & zzz and having 4 gatcha games at once and not good XD LMAOOOOO

Also I’ve decided to put Act 2 on hiatus until I finish the side stories for act 1 of this story. I was initially going to just switch back and forth, but decided that was too tedious so just wanted to give a heads up on that.

I have to say, it was interesting to learn that Lumine & Aether never used their real names in Teyvat so this does throw a bit of a wrench into my own OC Story based on the current canon. But it makes sense considering that we as players make a name for the traveler when we first start the game

Hmmm, personally for me, I like to think that since Skyla knows the traveler’s real name and does nicknames based on that. She has a closer connection to them than most people.

As always, virtual hugs for everyone! This chapter took longer mostly because I had writer’s block, i had the plot, I just didn’t know how to make it into words because it was a lot of political/business moves that I myself don’t know entirely XD soooo trying to appear smarter than I actually am, is a bit of a uhhhh conundrum

And as always feel free to leave any type of reactions in the comments below, hope u all r doing well! And I’ll respond back to comments soon!

And ty to Genshin_Addict17 for the comment on the previous chapter!

And bonus, I made a picrew cat version of Kaeya & Skyla, credit to @Cm_ric0 for the amazing picrew for everyone to use noncommercially(https://picrew.me/share?cd=L3PsVP0GKA)!

Personally I like to imagine Kaeya either annoying skyla too much or giving too much affection and Skyla just cringing internally😅

Also random but anyone else play Tears of Themis?

Chapter 6: You're Not Wasting Time Stuck Here Like Me

Summary:

“Milady, I understand that perhaps I am unworthy of your hand. But I have firsthand witnessed your generosity towards others, your perseverance amidst difficult circumstances and your intelligence in picking up even the finest details in the business world.” The businessman declared with hearts in his eyes, a flower bouquet at hand. “It would be my greatest honor to be able to court you.”

“Excuse me, what now?”

Notes:

Please note Ada is Skyla's personal maid, she did an apprenticeship under Adelinde

Chapter Text

Ada nearly threw a bloodthirsty glare at the bodyguards who had failed to intervene at the businessman that nearly threw themselves at her Lady’s feet.

She on the other hand immediately intervened on her lady’s behalf, stepping forward and shielding her master. “As Master Diluc has previously announced, he will not be accepting ANY marriage proposals or courtings to her Ladyship at this time - Sir Argerlich.”

Ada grinded her teeth, standing her ground as the man nearly tried to wrestle his way back into Lady Skyla’s eyeline, the young girl clearly bewildered about the situation and still reeling a bit.

Skyla blinked confusingly before stepping forward and addressing the man while reassuring Ada. “Sir Argerlich, I won’t tolerate someone that treats one of my own like a punching bag.”

Back straight, a proud stance and lips pursed slightly in dismay.

Out of the corner of her eyes, Ada found herself silently admiring her master’s visage.

Although there were a decent amount of stingy nobles that criticized Lady Skyla behind her back, in all honesty it is a wonder that the girl was able to emulate the aura of nobility in such a short amount of time.

That took not only hard work, but talent.

“And I certainly wouldn’t hand myself over to someone that shows such blatant disrespect.” Skyla sternly bore her eyes into the man’s. “I kindly ask you to remove yourself from these premises and to never show yourself again.”

Argerlich immediately got up, confusion in his eyes before rage filled his voice as he tried to push his way through. “Unhand me! I have a right! How dare a measly maid block my path to her Ladyship. I bet it was you that put those ideas in her head to ignore me.”

“You-you weasley little thing! You brainwashed her didn’t you! There is no way she wouldn’t dare to at least glance over and pay respect to me,” Argerlich grinded his teeth and glared harshly at Ada. “What did you bastards tell her?!”

Ada scoffed at the sight, choosing not to pay any mind to the madman. Instead turned away to guide her Lady away from the commotion and towards their carriage.

Mentally she prepared a list of things to say to Master Diluc about the incident as well as her own list of questions for the bodyguards that were assigned today.

How did they miss it? Were they distracted?

She didn’t want to blame anyone specifically, but she definitely felt exasperated that such a man managed to get so close to her Ladyship.

‘Ada.’

The maid grinded her teeth, chewing the bottom of her lip as she thought about alternative solutions to protecting her Ladyship’s freedom while also fulfilling her Lord’s safety measures.

‘Ada-’

The young Lady was clearly distraught at being trapped indoors for so long and even though they just recently got rid of the nailed in windows, that doesn’t mean her Ladyship wouldn’t try to escape on her own.

In fact, her Ladyship seemed to even enjoy the thought of a chase and in turn heightened Master Diluc’s anxiety.

“Ada!”

“Huh?”

“Are you alright? You spaced out there for a while,” Lady Skyla looked at her worryingly from across the carriage.

“Yes, of course Lady Skyla.” Ada silently scolded herself before schooling her own expression into a neutral one.

On the other hand, she watched as Lady Skyla’s express instantly turned sour at the addressment, still not used to her newly granted noble title.

In the next moment though, Lady Skyla focused her attention on Ada.

“Are you sure you’re alright? You seemed deep in thought.”

“I’m well, please do not worry.”

Lady Skyla furrowed her eyebrows before letting out a long sigh. “I’m assuming that you’re thinking about the best way to break the news to me and Diluc, correct”

Ada simply nodded in return.

Afterall, it was not her place to speak of Master Diluc’s actions. There was a chance she could make the situation worse and complicate things further between the two siblings.

“I’m afraid you’ll have to consult with Master Diluc directly about…what Argerlich said earlier.” Ada bowed her head slightly, making sure not to accidentally bump into the young Lady sitting across from herself within the carriage. “My apologies that I’m unable to reveal more, but I believe directly consulting with him is the best course of action instead of a third source like me.”

Lady Skyla sighed heavily a second time, propping her elbow on the carriage windowsill. “Of course it is…”

“Lady Skyla…”

The young Lady immediately raised her hand up in a stop motion, her lips pursuing into a small frown as she stared outside the window.

“...”

“And you couldn’t have just TOLD me?!”

Ada nearly flinched at her Ladyship’s raised voice, holding in her breath to suppress the urge. She worriedly fidgeted, instinctively rubbing the top of her left thumb as she stood outside the closed doorway of Master Diluc’s office.

“...”

“I did it for your own good.”

“Own good? Own good?!”

“Skyla-”

“NOPE. Don’t just ‘Skyla’ me!” Her Ladyship exclaimed in return. “You may be my brother now, but that doesn’t mean you have full autonomy of my life.”

“I wasn’t-”

“Diluc, I just want a heads up.”

“...”

“You weren’t supposed to be outside anyway.”

“Oh really? Is this what we’re playing at now???”

A heaved and resigned sigh from the young Lord.

“I…I didn’t want to worry you more.”

“Worry? Me? And why would a marriage proposal- excuse me, MARRIAGE PROPOSALSSSS-”

Skyla huffed, emphasizing the ‘s’ in her sentence.

“Why the hell would that worry me?”

“...”

“Because I know you…you worry about how to appropriately decline, do a bunch of research on the person’s status and their relationship to the Dawn Winery and wear yourself out.”

“...”

Ada pressed herself closer to the doorway as she heard the creaking of Master Diluc’s chair and the sound of footsteps.

“You’re still recovering, you don’t need the added stress.”

“...”

“Skyla...”

“I’m still pissed.”

“...”

“I’m…I’m sorry.”

“...”

“You may think that I overstepped, but I did what I believed was necessary. I didn’t want you getting caught up in the politics so soon after your introduction.”

“...”

“You know as well as I do how complicated these types of things can get, did you already forget how steadily they ganged up on you?”

“Tch.”

“Skyla.”

“Hmph.”

“I do not regret the decision I made in the end. If anything, I would do it all over again should such a situation arise again.”

“...”

Master Diluc sighed once more.

“Should I call Kaeya over?”

“W-What?”

“You always seem to listen to him better.”

W-Was that a scoff?

Ada blinked surprisingly as she heard the disdain in her Master’s voice.

“W-When have I listened better to him?”

Master Diluc immediately let out a huff. “When have you not?”

“Excuse me?” Skyla exclaimed loudly. “What the hell are you talking about? If anything, you two are demons that manage to get your way no matter what. As far as I’m concerned, I’m trapped under either one of you two’s thumbs no matter what.”

“...”

“Oh what, cat’s got your tongue?”

“No, I’m too tired to deal with this.”

“Well then, if you’re too tired, then maybe you should loosen up a bit and stop treating everything like a nuclear bomb around me. I’m not a baby.”

“A nuclear what now?”

“...I forgot that y’all don’t have a nuclear bomb…probably not good to give ideas though, but basically imagine a really baddddd Klee bomb.”

“...”

“Say no more, I don’t want to even know.”

“Okie, well the point is…I still stand by what I said earlier. I think that you and Kaeya are going way out of bounds. This-ThIS is TOO MUCH. You guys are way too overprotective.”

“These measures are necessary.”

“I can’t with y'all.”

“Why do I feel like this is some out of the world lingo?”

“...”

“I can’t…I really can’t with y’all. J-Just next time tell me if it is something big or important like this.”

“That will be difficult.”

“Diluc!”

“Sky…you’re still young, you’ve only recently entered noble society. And I want to make sure that you have every opportunity to still be yourself before you’re fully engulfed by it.”

“...”

“Sky…we’ve noticed. And it’s not just us…the transition to being a Ragnvindr, it’s taking a toll on you.”

Silence.

A sharp breath.

Ada herself pursed her lips at her Ladyship’s lack of an immediate retort, the maid’s heart growing heavier as some recent memories floated to the surface.

“He really is such a fucking bastard!”

“Milady really, it’s fine.”

“Oh hell no! He deserves a beating! How dare he fucking cheat on you!”

“Milady really, this matter is trivial. There’s no need to get rallied up.”

“Girl, let me at him. If not, I’ll at least hire someone to beat him up for you.”

“Milady please don’t get in trouble with the law for my sake.”

“Fine, I’ll just tell Kaeya ahead of time that I have some pranks in mind, that should at least reduce the penalty.”

“Milady!”

Ada couldn’t help but chuckle from afar as she watched the scene unfold before her, Naomi desperately holding Lady Skyla from walking out one of the ballroom doorways to go beat up the maid’s former boyfriend.

She was simply passing by the area when she heard the commotion from another doorway, peeking in briefly at the sight of the two girls exchanging words in the practice ballroom.

From the hallway she had witnessed Naomi, a fellow maid, tearing up as she cleaned the floor of the ballroom before being joined by her Ladyship.

Milady had apparently wanted to practice some ballroom dancing on her own before finding the distressed maid, the two conversed on Naomi’s dysregulated emotions before well…it turned into a quote on quote ‘shitting session’?

To which apparently, many ‘shitting sessions’ followed up in the days afterwards.

Which somehow turned into singing and musical meetups?

“We had a plan, move out of this town, baby…

West of the sand, it’s all we talked about lately…

I’d pack the car, bring your guitar and Jane for smokin’”

Naomi roughly learned some random lyrics from Milady, who apparently got these weird lyrics and ‘country song’ from a recurring dream that she had.

While Naomi sang her sorrows away, Milady provided the musical accompaniment via guitar and the pair practiced away.

One session turned into two, then three, then it became a daily occurrence to the point that Ada lost count.

It made sense.

Naomi found something to distract herself from her breakup - discovering that her man randomly disappeared one night only to bring home some gal from Liyue.

While Milady, who was bored out of her mind from being stuck indoors all the time, was able to focus her attention on something other than books, etiquette and noble duty.

“Did your boots stop workin’?
Did your truck break down?
Did you burn through money?
Did your ex find out?”

Milady happily strung the guitar strapped onto her shoulders, kicking up a storm in dance as her frilly pajama dress flowed freely.

Ada watched wide-eyed as the pair of singers slowly grew an audience in size over time, each new meeting driving a bigger and bigger crowd.

Somehow a silly meeting to spite a heartbreaker attracted the attention of the Manor workers and became a part of their daily routine.

“Was the whiskey flowin’?

Were you a fight? (In a fight)

Did the nerves come get you?
What's your alibi?(Alibi)”

Mouth agape, Ada couldn’t help being memorized by the seemingly rudimentary dance and song.

Under the cover of the night, the candles illuminated the dark worn out ballroom, its flames swaying to and fro as a chorus of folks twirled in unison. They happily tapped away to the sequence of dance moves her Ladyship introduced to them, arms linked up and frolicing away.

The ladies the main circle prance about, timing the swing of their skirts while the males bopped alongside them.

For those still enthusiastic about the warm atmosphere but not dancers, they clapped away to the beat of the musical instrumentals and provided a steady rhythm for all to follow.

One guitar expanded to a mini band, taking normal household tools and using them as percussion:

A worn out drawer to hit upon for beats

Worn out pots and pans for additional touches to the main tempo

Leaf whistle for ambience

One melodica that they found in the annex building

Wind chimes for makeshift bells

And a broken piano they dragged over from another old ballroom

Yet somehow they blended perfectly to form a chorus like no other.

Skyla’s bubbly voice echoed in the chamber, clapping the loudest out of everyone and raising her hands higher as she encouraged everyone to embrace the warm atmosphere.

The mesh blanket loosely hung off her shoulders, revealing the casual free flowing pajama dress she had on underneath.

Despite the improper nature of her nightwear in front of her servants, Skyla was carefree and all giggles. Her bright smile practically lit up the room and was infectious to anyone that dropped by the area.

Ada couldn’t help but lean against the doorway time and time again, sneaking in little breaks here and there to watch her Ladyship slowly gather a crowd from the first string of the melody. These were the rare moments that her Ladyship gave a genuine smile while residing at the Dawn Winery.

“Ah…so this is how you all fell in love with her.”

Ada flinched at the sudden introduction of a voice next to herself, whipping her head around to see that it was Lehrerin.

The female teacher had a soft fond expression on her face as she studied her Ladyship’s movements - free and unbounding - like a sparrow fluttering in the broad Mondstadt skies.

“I greet Madame Lehrerin.” Ada did a small curtsy, a slight tremble in her voice for having given delayed salutations.

“There’s no need really.” Lehrerin chuckled as she waved away the pleasantries, her eyes still fixated on Lady Skyla’s movements.

Arms folded, body muscles relaxed, Lehrerin continued to stare at the scene before them.

There was a certain warmth behind her eyes, the corners of her lips slightly curled up.

Is this why Master Diluc entrusted Lady Skyla’s education to this instructor?

Did he accurately predict that the two would pair up well as instructor and student?

“Ada…what is it that you like about your Master?”

“Pardon?”

Lehrerin giggled at the surprised look sprayed across the maid’s face. “You heard correctly, don’t worry. I’m just curious as to what entrances you all to her. It helps me understand how you all view her and I can better support her future studies.”

“Oh.” Ada blinked in confusion, but then turned back to the softly lit ballroom and the mini concert. “I…I don’t know to be honest.”

“Huh…that’s a rather surprising answer.” Lehrerin raised an eyebrow, but retained an inquisitive look. “You certainly don’t hear that everyday.”

Abruptly the door slammed open, startling Ada out of her memories.

“S-Skyla!”

Ada immediately stepped back, pressing herself against the wall as her Ladyship bolted out of Master Diluc’s office and ran down a nearby stairwell.

The maid turned her head back to the doorway, witnessing Master Diluc close in his eyes in distress. He proceeded to heave a large sigh and pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“Would you like a cup of cider, Master Diluc?”

The former didn’t respond immediately, choosing to steady himself against his desk before gesturing for Ada to come into the office and close the door behind her.

“Apologies that you had to hear such commotion from us,” Master Diluc voiced out with a penitent expression.

“Please do not worry Master Diluc,” Ada reassured. “It is only normal for there to be some degree of friction between family especially with the recent external stressors. I also apologize for being unable to properly protect her Ladyship from unruly advances.”

“I’ve already had a discussion with her bodyguards on how to approach such a situation again and prevent it down the line.” Ada pressed her fingers neatly against her stomach as she kept up her posture. “They’ve already voiced their apologies to her Ladyship as well.”

”No, the fault lies with me.” His Lordship quickly shook his head from side to side. “I should have told her ahead of time before she made rounds to the city. I…I just anticipated that I would have more time.”

“Her Ladyship is in a position that puts many eyes on her, she is aware of that as well. So I don’t believe she’ll be accepting any attempts of courtship for the sake of the family name.” Ada lowered her head slightly as she witnessed his Lordship’s eyes darken slightly.

“She…She shouldn’t have to think of such a thing in the first place,” A soft groan escaped Master Diluc’s lips, his eyes cast off to the side. “She should be enjoying her life - focused on her studies, testing the newest potions in her alchemy lab and eating desserts without a care in the world.”

A subtle sadness enveloped his expression.

“Not the dragged weight of the trendiest dresses, which accessories pair best with her hair and how to angle herself when the gaze of strangers falls onto her.”

“The world of nobility is harsh, but I believe Milady has the capabilities to rise to the occasion,” Ada responded resolutely.

Intrigue seemed to strike Master Diluc’s face, his silence inviting her to elaborate further.

“Lady Skyla is resolute, diligent, careful, cautious, observant - she takes notes of her surroundings and tries to play it into practice the next time a repeat situation arises.” Ada spoke out loud.

Her mind floated back to the countless times Lady Skyla hurriedly wrote into a notebook or notepad whenever she learned something new - whether it was the hidden snarky remarks from snobbish nobles or the economics of the merchant world - she took it all in stride.

The furrowing of Milady’s eyebrows, subtle picking of skin at her fingertips or silent chewing of her lower lips.

No matter what happened, the waterfall of new responsibilities, the prinkling constant of criticism from ‘nobility,’ and the switch of treatment from all walks of life - Lady Skyla held her head high in the public eye despite the weight of it all.

“Yet it is this very ability to adapt quickly to changes that damages her. Her initial allure, her true essence is her natural ability to connect with the people around her.”

Ada thought back to all the nights that pseudo concerts were held in the dingy ballroom.

The mismatched band members-

The soft lighting from leftover candles on the verge of death-

Yet despite all that, laughter and joy could be heard ringing in the air.

Warmth like the gentle winds of Mondstadt that cradled their everyday lives.

“Master Diluc, I do not think that your concerns are necessarily invalid.” Ada shook her head from side to side. “Milady pushes herself to meet your expectations…or rather what she believes they are. What she believes are the expectations of all. And what is the best way to implement them.”

“But I also believe that in changing herself, is also losing herself in the process.” Ada expressed worriedly. “Even if it is a means of survival in these new circumstances.”

Those dances with the servants in the night, they were the few times that Milady truly smiled .

Master Diluc continued to stare at Ada inquisitively, “I’m curious. Based on your observations so far as her personal maid, what do you believe should be Skyla’s next steps?”

“Hmmm…”

A test.

Ada pursed her lips as various thoughts rolled around in her mind before finally settling on one sentence.

“I believe in her Ladyship’s next steps and will intervene when necessary to ensure her safety.”

At the utterance of such words, a small smirk lined Master Diluc’s lips and he let out a small but relieved chuckle. “Adelinde was right to recommend you as Sky’s personal maid.”

“About that…could you indulge me as the reasoning behind that?”

One day Ada was just a regular maid in the Dawn Winery, the next day she was suddenly summoned by Adelinde and Master Diluc as the first personal maid assigned to Lady Skyla.

To Ada, a job was a job.

Her work at the Dawn Winery was manageable, the pay was good and there were a multitude of additional work benefits in the signed job contract other than the paycheck.

A job was just a job at the end of the day.

Why choose someone like that for your precious little sister?

If it was herself, Ada would have chosen someone that was faithful and diligent to take care of her own younger sister’s needs.

“Would you like to take a guess?” Master Diluc playfully returned a question in turn.

Ada shook her head from side to side once more. “Pardon my bluntness, but I rather not.”

“I see…then I suppose that partially answers your question.”

Ada gave a puzzled expression at Master Diluc’s remark. “But Milord, why not choose someone that is devoted to her Ladyship? Someone that would be a constant at her side no matter what? Wouldn’t that be more ideal to have such a supporter at her side during this tumultuous time?”

“If it were me, I would make sure that my younger sister would be protected at all costs.” Ada said with her hand clasped over her chest.

“Ah yes, Adelinde mentioned you also had a younger sister.” Master Diluc skillfully dodged the questions. “May I ask what your relationship is like with her?”

Ada furrowed her eyebrows, a slight frustration building up from within but she answered him nevertheless. “We’re about 8 years apart, so it’s definitely strange. Different from your Lordship’s.”

“I only see her every so often since I decided to live alone as an adult while she resides with my parents.” Ada rambled onward.

“Did you ever have arguments with her despite the age gap?”

“Of course, it is only natural. I know more about the world about her, yet she chooses to venture into the outside world without any care. They are younger afterall, so less exposure to the cruelties of life than me.” Ada responded to the underlying question, staring deeply into Master Diluc’s eyes. “We push and pull each other’s boundaries as we figure out our norm.”

“Like the ocean tides?”

“Yes…”

“I see.”

“Master Diluc.”

“Feel free to speak your mind and not to hold back.”

“Master Diluc, you wish not to repeat the same mistake with Master Kaeya - so you try your hardest to close the gap with your present day sister. Instead of letting things play by ear, to the whims of the strings of fate like last time - to prevent wounds from festering, you apply disinfectants early on.”

“You wish for history not to repeat itself because it already has in many ways.” Ada swallowed hard as she waited for his Lordship’s reaction. “Yet I think sometimes as the older sibling we forget that everything is new for them, it doesn’t mean they are rebellious necessarily. They are trending their own path, which is considered ‘new’ for them. Because…it is.”

“So…should I just let her go her own way then?” A melancholic look fell down Master Diluc, his bangs covering part of his face.

“I think…like the ocean waves that clash against one another, things will mellow out eventually. Compromises will be made. After all, when different waves clash, they tend to create a whole new wave from the remnants of both. With destruction, comes creation.”

“But there’s no guarantee.”

“Silence isn’t always golden. Sometimes clashing isn’t a bad thing, it means that you’re comfortable enough to express your feelings. That alone is a good sign.”

Master Diluc heaved a long sigh, massaging his temples.

“Milord, I think at the end of the day…perhaps just trust the process, yourself and Milady. Relationships aren't something you can force.”

Melancholy seemed to fill his eyes at the last sentence, his gaze seemingly distant and resignation in his shoulders.

Ada nervously waited for her master’s reply, a slight bitterness on her tongue as her consciousness gnawed at her.

The words she spoke of were nothing special really.

It was simply logic.

Afterall both Milord and Milady took the best actions that they believed in their respective scenarios.

Master Diluc valued Milady’s life and safety at the cost of everything else.

Because he wanted to see her live to see another day.

Milady valued all forms of freedom, even if it meant taking risks.

Because to her, that is what it means to ‘live.’

They simply had clashing beliefs, two different sides to the same coin.

Yet everything the maid had said seemed to nail Master Diluc to the coffin.

The man before her had sunken eyes, a facial expression that dragged downward and a withered-like figure.

For someone that always had a nonchalant look, taking strides forward without any look back - the pride of Mondstadt - he rarely looked so defeated.

Things seemed to pause at a standstill with the silence that hung over, before she finally caught the whispers of a murmur.

“Pardon?”

“Ada…”

“Yes Master Diluc.”

The man slowly looked up, acceptance and resignation like a fog that enveloped his very being.

“I entrust my sister’s livelihood to you.”

“I-I…Yes, of course Master Diluc. I will do my best.”

Skyla blinked confusingly before stepping forward and addressing the man while reassuring Ada. “Sir Argerlich, I won’t tolerate someone that treats one of my own like a punching bag.”

Argerlich means annoying XD I just honestly googled that:

Ada was trying to think about how to remedy the situation and calm down Diluc

Ada chooses to answer Diluc is a vague manner so that she isnt right or wrong necessarily. Instead she states that she will be side by side with Skyla no matter the choices that skyla makes, and to intervene if it ever gets too dangerous for Skyla.

“Would you like to take a guess?” Master Diluc playfully returned a question in turn.

I like to imagine that Diluc wants a personal maid for Skyla that is able to grow alongside Skyla. Which is why he dodges the question with a question of his own that he is also curious about.

Diluc doesnt need someone that is fully nobility to subvert skyka’s authority, but he also doesnt need someone that wholeheartedly just follows watever skyla wants. He wants someone level-headed by his sister’s side, but if the maturity difference is too much, its like a mom or older sister looking after a child.

I always imagined Ada age wise to be similar to Skyla’s, i dont have a specific age in mind though. But bc both of them r mature, i imagine that they would be a good pair. I also see ada as someone as more on the ‘cold’ end, someone that needs ‘warmth’.

I also specifically chose ‘ada’ as a name for skyla’s personal maid to parallel adelinde, I sorta imagined ada as a mini adelinde in the sense that they both support their masters to the best of their ability & both are able to discern the ragnvindr family dynamics

“Ada…”

“Yes Master Diluc.”

The man slowly looked up, acceptance and resignation like a fog that enveloped his very being.

“I entrust my sister’s livelihood to you.”

“I-I…Yes, of course Master Diluc. I will do my best.

I sorta see it as Master Diluc finalizing his judgement that he thinks that he should take some steps back on how to deal with having a sister

and also telling ada to take care of skyla in a way tht best suits skyla’s growth since he trusts her even more after this conversation

we hug now - by sydney rose

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLYtdCdkuMI&ab_channel=sydneyrose

With Diluc & Skyla as well as Kaeya & Skyla, at this stage of Act 2, I’ve always imagined it in relationship to the lyrics in the 1st youtube link. The 2nd youtube link is the full song from the artist(we hug now - sydney rose).

But overall, I always thought of act 2 as the following:

For Skyla, her being on the brink of death was just an event to her, something she has accepted & moved on for the most part.

Meanwhile Diluc & Kaeya are still reeling with the consequences, the PTSD of her death.

“I have a feeling you got everything you wanted

and you’re not wasting time stuck here like me

you’re just thinkin’ it’s a small thing that happened

the world ended when it happened to me”

Diluc’s POV with the song lyrics:

<I have a feeling you got everything you wanted>

From Diluc’s perspective, he sees that Skyla is simply happy to be alive. She’s out & about, she’s wanting to travel, wanting to work on her pharmacy business, wanting to be a medic, wanting to be an adventurer.

<and you’re not wasting time stuck here like me>

Meanwhile Diluc’s scrambling to find the right bodyguards, the right maids, the right teacher, the right books to teach her nobility, the right wording to help her integrate as a Dawn Winery Master. He’s doing everything possible to transition her as smoothly as possible, giving her the best resources. But more importantly, everything he can do to protect her so that history won’t repeat itself.

<you’re just thinkin’ it’s a small thing that happened>

He sees her annoyed at the precautions, he sees her fighting back against the regulations, he sees her fighting against the things that are keeping her alive.

<the world ended when it happened to me>

And he’s still struggling to erase the memories of that day, the day she died, blood pooling everywhere in the cathedral and all he could do was wait and watch the surgery doors open & hope for the best. And pray to the gods that he didn’t break his promise with Petra in keeping Skyla safe. All he can see is her lifeless body in a coma, everything is sterile white & its like a pre-funeral & he can’t do anything about it bc all he knows to do is how to fight, how to protect. He doesnt have the medical knowledge.

The very things he fought for as a darknight hero, yet he couldnt protect the people closest to him

Kaeya’s POV with the song lyrics:

<I have a feeling you got everything you wanted>

From Kaeya’s perspective, same as Diluc's, he sees that Skyla is simply happy to be alive. She’s out & about, she’s wanting to travel, wanting to work on her pharmacy business, wanting to be a medic, wanting to be an adventurer. She seems to disregard the entire incident as a whole as if it wasn’t a major plot point. As if she was good as new.

<and you’re not wasting time stuck here like me>

Meanwhile Kaeya had a full mental breakdown for an entire month that Skyla was in a coma, dealing with memory loss, on medical bedrest. He’s doing teh same as Diluc, putting bodyguards into place to protect his sister because he doesnt want to lose her again.

<you’re just thinkin’ it’s a small thing that happened>

We don’t see Kaeya’s reaction in this chapter yet, but based on Act 1, he’s frustrated that she doesn’t seem to care about her own life. That she sees herself as insignificant

<the world ended when it happened to me>

Kaeya kept seeing images of a dead Petra, his promise broken. And the helplessness of watching someone you love & treasure just wither away and bleed away in your arms. Someone that held ur hand in ur darkest times, that BROUGHT you back to life on multiple occasions. Yet, u cant do the same bc of your lack of knowledge in the medical field. To be unable to repay all that she had done for him. Skyla had saved him mentally, socially and physically bc she knew his secret. She validated his insecurities & covered them up with bandages.

The fear of losing someone like that again.

Overall, I got inspired by some ragbros tiktok edits with this song about the day their father died. And im like hmmm, okie that but also with skyla’s death :D and it fits too! but also i feel like realistically ptsd & trauma isnt something that can just disappear after 1 day, it takes time to heal old wounds & its a long journey

Author Note:

Hiiiii, XD SOOOOOO sikeeeeee! Ummm, yes, I’m alive.

And ummm yeah I was initially going to finish the side stories first before hitting act 2, but I got very inspired by tiktok songs and also the angst patches in hsr 3.1 update

As for those tht r still reading the side stories & got my last life update: Did I find a new job yet and out of my toxic one? XD uhhh nope, but I’m slowly discovering on what paths to take. Albeit very slowly.

Yeah I’ve just decided not to like go for any internal company jobs n go external & this is my only path now.

Ummm so yeah back to normal shenanigans, I had a strong urge to write, but it got delayed bc someone vandalized my mom’s car so we had to like call the police n everything. 1st time calling police. Ig its the ao3 curse? Bc i had to translate everything for her to talk to police, i was like half awake on sunday trying to figure out wat to do

Anyway i hope u guys enjoyed this chapter even though ummm XD its been uhhh, monthssssss? and I think it's a bit on the shorter end, unfortunately. i wanted to write more but if i did, the next chapter would be another month i think

Side note, I am curious as to everyone’s thoughts about Diluc & Skyla’s ideologies & psyches here. If u guys r taking a specific side, or relate to both.

other than that, I think I was able to make the banter between them very sibling-like, hopefully.

But yeah this chapter once again, overall heavily inspired by ‘we hug now - sydney rose’ song

As always virtual hugs to everyone! honestly i would be super surprised if anyone is still reading this tbh 😅

Notes:

PS. Yes the title of this chapter is inspired by the song lyrics too
