Can't help falling in love

Chapter Text

Toge still can’t believe what was happening to him.

It wasn’t for the reason that he was currently the center of everyone’s stares and murmurings. His typical social life outside of his friends only had two options: be judged or ignored. He was used to it, no longer even bothered. In fact, he liked it that way. They can whisper about his lineage all they want and spread ridiculous stories of atrocities he never committed. At least because of that, most people learned to leave him alone.

Rumors were both a thorn in his side and a shield at the same time.

But this time, it was different. The story being spread around is not some exaggeration or made-up tale about the monstrosity of his awful ancestry and magic. No, this time the rumors held some truth in them. For the umpteenth time, he was grateful for his mask covering half of his face as he forced himself to ignore all the curious eyes directed towards him and Yuuta.

At first glance, nothing was unusual.

He and Yuuta had walked to their classes together many times before. During their first and second years here, they had nearly identical schedules so it made sense for them to be joined at the hip. However, by the time they were third year and onwards, students were allowed to pick which special classes they liked to attend and which skills they preferred to develop more.

Since he and Yuuta had different interests—Toge leaning onto the magic crafts and alteration area while Yuuta focused into the combat and abjuration magic— it made sense for them to have fewer classes together. But they still hang out a lot, oftentimes even walking side-by-side down the hallway until they have to part at an intersection.

This was nothing new.

What was new was the fact that there was a vague label between them now. He said yes to being Yuuta’s date at the Celestial Dance. So what does that make them? Best friends? Boyfriends? Or just best friends going to a dance—a dance that has romantic implications. This was the question in most students’ minds, and the weight of their gazes was heavy on Toge’s shoulders.

Because he knew that whatever this was, it wasn’t genuine. Yuuta was under the influence of the love spell and now, his reputation was being torn to shreds because of Toge’s foolishness. His best friend had such a good record—excelling in classes, winning the GMT, related to Gojo Satoru, being the best student mage, etc. But being in a relationship with Toge? That would be the stain in his otherwise pristine name.

Toge can take all the criticisms. People can judge him all they want. He’s strong enough to handle it—has been strong for so long that he’s forgotten what it feels to be bothered by such trivial things. But he can’t take it if Yuuta falls with him too. He can’t let Yuuta go through the same harsh words, get the same judging stares, or be treated like an outcast.

It was different when they were simply friends. People often spin the tale that Yuuta took pity on Toge and befriended him. A rumor that angered his best friend but Toge personally didn’t mind. It was fine—he was used to how unfair the world of mages was to him. He just didn’t want it to be unfair to Yuuta too.

He was used to it, born into it even. But Yuuta wasn’t and he should never go through anything like that.

They were in their senior year. They will be graduating soon and that means they need to reconsider what they will be doing afterwards. As a member of the Inumaki clan, Toge already knew that his options were limited due to the prejudice. But he has long already made up his mind about what he wanted for his future and has carefully planned for it.

Yuuta, however, had endless potential. He could join the Magic Council if he wanted and become an important figurehead in their world. With his history of winning the GMT, he could even become a famous Dueller and fight in bigger arenas. He even had the talent to become a Healer or even an Excorcist—seeing that he had an experience of freeing his first love’s spirit. Yuuta was a very talented mage who was capable of many things and thus could literally get into any job in their world.

But if associated with an Inumaki, it might hinder a lot of his chances.

Toge knew that—and he hates that he only realized that now. He had been so blinded by his feelings that he didn’t think straight. Why couldn’t he have realized that before Yuuta even got to eat his cookies? Why didn’t he realize that before he even made the love potion? Why didn’t he realize that before he even decided to attempt to ask Yuuta out?

He was being selfish.

Because even with this realization, Toge’s heart still skipped a beat when Yuuta brushed his hand against his as they arrived at the intersection. His class was on the opposite direction of Yuuta’s but instead of parting like usual, his best friend(?) followed his path and walked him to his class.

He fought a blush as Yuuta silently intertwined their fingers, his larger hand enveloping Toge’s smaller one protectively—as if someone would snatch him away—yet so tenderly at the same time. Or perhaps, Toge was delusional and he had to remind himself of the potion. But then when they got to Toge’s class, Yuuta, instead of saying a casual goodbye, leaned down to push Toge’s bangs aside and pressed a gentle kiss on his forehead.

Jkjlaskdlsadas!!??

His mind was a bunch of jumbled, unreadable letters. Almost akin to a keyboard smash or a gibberish cry as he was torn between gushing and trying to stay cool. But it was hard to stay cool when Yuuta’s lips felt hot against his skin.

“I’ll pick you up after class,” The raven said once he pulled away and flashed a tender smile on his face as kept looking at Toge like he was something precious—like he was something that needed to be treated with the utmost care. “Let’s go out for lunch today. Anywhere you like. It’s my treat.”

Toge was out of words. Not that there’s anything he could say, but there’s also nothing he could sign. Head empty with his cheeks so red that he looked like he had a fever. In fact, he might as well have a fever. His heart was beating so fast, his breath shallow, and his head dizzy as he was overwhelmed with the sudden affection from the person he had a crush on for so long.

He knows it’s the love potion. He kept reminding himself that it was the love potion.

But Toge is a lovesick fool and he threw caution to the wind as he indulged himself. Maybe, he thought selfishly. I can enjoy this…just a little bit.

He swore to himself he’ll fix this eventually. He’ll make an antidote, apologize to Yuuta, and accept any consequences. He might potentially also lose his best friend so…so it’s okay to indulge himself just a little bit, right? Death row prisoners often get to have a final wish so it’s okay for Toge to savor all of this before it all goes up in smoke, right?

Absolutely not, his mind argued.

Go for it, his heart screamed.

Fortunately, Toge is usually a smart and responsible person. Unfortunately, he was also a lovesick fool. And in the battle between the brain and the heart, as cliche as it sounds, love always wins no matter how foolish it is. To think he had judged that red-haired mermaid for being foolish enough to lose her voice over a prince, but now, he realized what it’s like to feel that way. Because here he is, being stupid over his own prince. Thus, he nodded and signed, ‘Okay.’

Yuuta beamed at his acceptance. His larger hand held Toge’s smaller one—and he tried not to fixate on how safe it felt to be cupped in his warmth, how fascinating it was to see their size difference. He had always known that Yuuta was bigger than him, but he never had the chance to be allowed to marvel at it so openly like now.

Still holding onto his hand, Yuuta lifted them up and pressed another gentle kiss against his skin. He was very affectionate and touchy today—the love potion, he reminded himself again before he started overanalyzing his best friend’s actions. Then with another bright smile, Yuuta said, “Alright. I’ll come pick you up after class. I’ll see you later, Toge.”

Toge tried not to fixate on how good his name sounded when it came from Yuuta’s tender tone. It was nothing unusual. Yuuta had always been gentle when calling his name, but there was something about it today—the love potion!— and a hopeless, pathetic part of Toge wished it meant something more.

But anything that Yuuta does, he must remind himself of the potion before he gets too giddy. At this point, he feels like a broken record but there must be an emphasis. He has to keep drilling that into his brain so that he doesn’t keep hoping to get something out of this.

He spent the rest of the class unable to focus on what the professor was saying. He was aware of the burning stares directed towards him but Toge was too deep in his mind to even care about them. He was at war—a part of him was panicking over the chaos and consequences that will come after this. And then another part of him was woozy like the lovesick fool he was because Yuuta asked him out on a date. What do you do on a date?

Well, technically it’s just lunch. His brain reminds him, urging him to calm down. They have lunch together almost every day so it’s nothing out of the ordinary. But—But he asked me out!

Arguing with himself like this. Toge was a hopeless, lovesick fool, wasn’t he?

Toge heaved a sigh as he turned his phone off. Nobara has always known of his crush towards Yuuta and it didn’t take long for the other two juniors to catch on. In fact, everyone in their friend group except Yuuta knows of his feelings. And Nobara was always sure to let him know how frustrated she got whenever he started hopelessly pining over his best friend, or how many times she tried to play matchmaker with them only for her efforts to get sabotaged by either Toge’s foolishness or just mere circumstances.

He gets it.

It’s frustrating to help something so hopeless so when something finally works, you just want to grab on to that miracle and never let go.

Just like Nobara, a part of him wants to keep this hidden and enjoy the idea of his crush finally reciprocating his feelings. To finally put an end to his hopeless chasing and bask in the feeling of being loved by someone he loved. But he also knows where Megumi was coming from. It wouldn’t be right. Yuuta deserved to have the freedom to choose who he likes and not be imposed by a spell.

The solution is pretty easy. Toge was more than skilled enough to fix this problem in an instant. The only thing holding him back was his feeble heart. Toge hates it. He always wanted this—always wanted Yuuta even if he knew the consequences of that. But this was not how he had imagined it would happen. He wanted it to be genuine.

But at the same time, it’s hard to let go of something you’ve been craving for so long, and while Toge may have been smart, responsible and all the honorable things under the sun, he was still human. There was a part of him that was shamefully selfish and he made terrible mistakes. He grew up with so little love from his family yet was overwhelmed by Yuuta’s care, kindness, and understanding.

How could he not love him? How could he not want him? How could he just let that go?

He can’t. He doesn’t want to. But he has to.

With a sigh, Toge checked Yuuji’s private message where he sent a location attached with a short “good luck senpai! Have fun :D”. He sent an emote of a smiley face in response. At the very least, he reminded himself, he was lucky to have such supportive juniors in this current predicament. It’s not that he doesn’t trust Maki and Panda. It’s just that if they weren’t aware of this, then he’d rather not get them involved at all.

It was already dangerous enough that his juniors were in the know.

Now was not the time to wallow in those thoughts though.

As soon as his morning classes ended, he wasted no time casting spells on his books so he could shrink them to a smaller size and shove them in his pockets. He used to carry a schoolbag before but as soon as he learned this reduction spell, it instantly became one of his most used magic. He liked it because it was convenient.

But just as he was about to leave, he noticed three students gather around his table. Toge recognized their faces from the class he just had but couldn’t recall their names. People don’t usually speak to him unless it is class-related or if they want to ask him to make a potion for them. But Toge had had a hunch that these three weren’t here for either of those. And judging by their inquisitive glances, he braced himself for the inevitable questions.

“So uhm, Inumaki, right?” One of them finally voiced out, it was a tall guy with black hair. They had Arcane Ethics and Rune Theory classes together—his name was Shindo or something if his memory serves him right. Nevertheless, Toge acknowledged them with a nod. “Can we ask you a question?”

You’re already asking one. Toge mentally spat back. Perhaps he was feeling a bit impatient right now. After all, he wanted to be out of the class before Yuuta came to pick him up. He also had a feeling he wouldn’t like the topic that these three would bring up. But maybe he was just jumping to conclusions and they probably wanted to ask questions about class or something. And Toge didn’t want to be an asshole unless he was provoked.

So he gave them the benefit of the doubt—

“Is it true that…” Shindo started, faltering for a moment as if he still had a hard time believing what he was about to say. It’s almost as if the very thought of it was absurd, “that you and Okkotsu-san are…are like that?”

And the benefit of the doubt was revoked.

Toge raised an eyebrow at the weird phrasing. What? They can’t even acknowledge a proper word for it? But then again, that’s fair. Even Toge doesn’t know what he and Yuuta are right now. More than friends, less than lovers type of stuff? Or just best friends going on a very romantic dance together?

No, just a lovesick fool and the poor guy he manipulated.

Toge bitterly thought. Straightening his back, he pushed those incessant thoughts away. These horrible thoughts are something he’ll entertain when he’s alone but for now, he regards the three with a leveling stare. Because honestly, even though he also had no answer for their inquiry, whatever he and Yuuta had was nobody else’s business but theirs. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation, especially strangers.

So the only way to reply to a poorly worded question is an equally poor response. He nonchalantly shrugged before pushing his seat back and standing up with one hand in his pocket to signal the end of the discussion. He didn’t know the answer so he was not going to give them a proper one. I don’t know and that’s that.

But instead of getting the message, one of them—this one was blonde and he doesn’t know the name— had grabbed Toge by the hand. “Wait!” their tone was harsher than the other guy, “You didn’t even answer the question. You could just say a simple yes or no, surely even you can give that.”

He mentally counts one, two, three, taking a deep breath before he forces himself to calm down as he turned to face them. Gone were their hesitant demeanors and instead, they looked indignant, as if they were demanding that Toge gave them an answer. Even when Toge tried to tug his hand away, they wouldn’t let go.

There was a time when nobody would dare to touch Toge.

When he first arrived at Jujutsu Academy, he had a spiky rebellious haircut and was said to have a nasty stare. There were dangerous rumors surrounding him and it only got worse after that one incident. Toge was most notorious during his second year after he had furiously beaten an upperclassman to a magical duel, and words spread like wildfire of how the Inumaki kid was as monstrous as the rest of his kin.

The good thing about it was that people learned to leave him alone after that. The bad thing was that his family was pissed to hear the news of how he put a kid into a hospital. But the worst part had been the horrified look on Yuuta’s face. It’s not like Toge was the one who started the fight. But after that, he swore to himself that he would never do it again. He couldn’t bear to have his only friend look at him the way he did back then.

After that, rumors about him gradually died down as he deliberately tried to stay out of the spotlight. He met his other close friends, mellowed down, and even got into baking. If his friends were to describe him right now, “soft” would be the word they’d choose. (Even though Toge insists that he was still a tough guy and most definitely does not have a soft spot for his favorite idiots.)

There were still rumors and whispers about him from time to time, but it was never too loud to bother him anymore. But that was until today. This morning’s school article had his full name on blast for the rest of the student population to gossip about. Eventually, even the bad rumors built like a wall around Toge were not enough to shield him from this confrontation.

People wanted Yuuta. And now, words spread that Yuuta wanted the Inumaki outcast.

This time, the students were more curious than they were afraid of Toge. For a moment, he wished he had maintained a scarier reputation instead of letting his old one die down. Still, there was no point in getting angry. Even though he has been hot-headed lately, Toge is vaguely aware that he only had himself to blame for that.

(“Love makes you reckless. Anger makes you impulsive. Sadness makes you waver,” He could hear his mother’s words, branded into his mind since he was a child. “If you want to survive out there, don’t let yourself be controlled by your emotions. Always think twice before you act.”)

For a long time, Toge has lived by those teachings. Always rational, always so careful, and disciplined. Still, he was human and he has his moments of failure. The brutal duel during his second year was the first one, the love potion was his second, and Toge does not intend to make a third mistake.

So he willed himself to let go of his annoyance and tried to wrack his brain for a way to solve this situation peacefully. Be calm and rational like he was always taught. What does he usually do in order to avoid conflict? Stay quiet until they get bored—unlikely. Promise to bake them some cookies—no, that only worked for his juniors and Yuuta. Offer to spar with them—nope, only effective on Maki. Suggest to play a harmless prank together—no, that’s for Panda. Give them his best puppy eyes—ew, no. That only ever worked on Yuuta.

Damn. He really doesn’t know how to interact outside of his friends, does he?

But before he could go through other options, the hand around his wrist was gone. It was then that he noticed that Yuuta had arrived at the scene. The other students also looked flustered, either from their surprise at Yuuta’s sudden appearance or because of the fact that the school prince briefly touched their hand when he separated them from Toge. With his usual smile, Yuuta asked, “Excuse me, what seems to be the problem here?”

Although stated like a question, it felt more like a warning. Despite his politeness, there was an edge in Yuuta’s voice that Toge couldn’t put a finger on. He sounded like he was upset but was trying not to let it show. Typical Yuuta, Toge thought. Even if he was pissed, the special grade mage was always careful not to show if he was displeased.

But that doesn’t mean he was a pushover. At least, not anymore.

“Toge doesn’t really like it when people touch him without permission,” His best friend said, stepping in between him and the other students. With the raven’s back facing Toge, he couldn’t see what expression was on Yuuta’s face now but his tone was firm. “So I’d appreciate it if you respect that.”

“Oh,” was the first word that the other student could say. It took a moment for them to get their bearings. Hesitantly, they said, ”I’m sorry.” But a beat later, they quickly added, “It won’t happen again!”

Toge was curious about the sudden change in demeanor but then again, maybe they were just awestruck. It’s not every day that the school prince talked to common people—peasants, as Nobara would dub them, and with how much everyone puts Yuuta on a pedestal, she couldn’t be far from the truth. Nevertheless, he didn’t dwell on it much longer when Yuuta turned around to smile at him, “Should we go?”

He instantly nodded, not wanting things to escalate further. Toge watched as Yuuta laced their fingers together before tugging him away from the other three students. After they were a bit further away from the classroom, the raven finally turned to him with a concerned expression, “They didn’t hurt you, did they?”

Toge instantly scoffed, feeling insulted that Yuuta would think he’d get easily hurt. He could easily win even if it’s three against one! And as always, Yuuta understood his reaction even without words, causing the raven to laugh. “Oh, my bad. Of course, I knew you’d take care of them just fine.”

The shorter would give him a response but he needed both hands to sign. And instead of letting go, Yuuta only held tighter before bringing Toge’s hand up and pressing a tender kiss on his knuckles. As if he wasn’t already sappy enough today, he added, “Still, I want to make sure you’re okay. I don’t like it when anything bad happens to you, Toge.”

It’s the love potion.

He reminded himself once more, willing his heart not to run a marathon again before he pulled his hand away and playfully smacked the side of Yuuta’s head, earning him a groan. Instantly, the whole princely vibe that his best friend was exuding cracked as he whined, “Ow! Toge, why?”

‘Cringy,’ Toge signed, emphasizing the word as he scrunched his face in fake disgust. When he saw the pout on Yuuta’s face, his heart clenched in fondness as he signed, ‘I’m fine, Yuuta. Nothing will happen to me so no need to worry.’

“I will always worry. You know how I am,” Yuuta said, looking like a kicked puppy and Toge had to hold back the urge to pull him in for a hug. Wait, would it be awkward to give his best friend (whom he’s taking to the dance) a hug right now? Usually, he had no qualms about embracing him but he still doesn’t know what they are after the whole serenading and asking out fiasco earlier this morning.

There’s the whole thing with the potion too so maybe it would be best not to take advantage of this situation too much.

So instead, Toge settled with giving the pouting mage a pat on the head. It was almost comical to see the way Yuuta instantly leaned against the touch, his pouty expression melting into one of fondness. If the entire school population saw a charming prince or a powerful mage in Yuuta, Toge just saw an oversized puppy.

Not that Yuuta wasn’t charming or powerful, but he was also more than that. He was kind—and not just for the sake of being polite but the type of kindness that was willing to bear with Toge’s shenanigans with an amused smile. He was also thoughtful—the kind of thoughtful that always made sure that Toge was well-fed, keeping warm, or staying safe.

He can also be clumsy despite being a trained fighter. A genius but can also be a bit airheaded. Wise in the arena but can be very naive outside of it. Loyal to a fault but knows how to stand his ground when lines are drawn. There were so many dimensions and sides of Yuuta that not many knew about.

He was also so many things that Toge loves to love.

“Have you decided where you wanna go today?” Yuuta asked, breaking Toge out of his thoughts. “I don’t have classes this afternoon but if I remember correctly, you have Herbology later? I can walk you back to class afterward—if you want.”

No, my class got canceled so we have all the time,’ Toge responded, tilting his head in thought. Classes gettings canceled happened more often these past few days but he supposed it’s because the Celestial Dance is only a few weeks away and everyone was busy in preparation for it. ‘There’s also a new place Yuuji suggested. I’ll send you the location.’

“Perfect,” Yuuta beamed, fishing his phone out of his pocket to check the location as soon as Toge hit send. “Oh, it’s just close by! Hmm...ah! There it is, there seems to be an alley nearby!”

After that, Toge had expected that they’d head to the direction of the gates but instead, Yuuta laced their fingers together again and pulled him to the opposite path—he’s quite touchy today, Toge thought to himself. While it’s not unusual for them to hold hands and be clingy with each other, Toge can’t help but overthink every single word or touch and attribute it all to the potion.

Don’t get him wrong. He is enjoying this, but not wholly.

The guilt was gnawing him inside and he knew this was what Megumi meant that he should at least make an antidote to cure Yuuta of the symptoms. Not only for his best friend’s sake but for Toge’s peace of mind as well. Because at this point, he’ll be overthinking whether or not each word or gesture was genuine or influenced by the spell.

After a while, Toge started to wonder where Yuuta was taking him. He assumed they’d be walking out of the campus and commuting like normal, regular people, since they’d be heading out to the non-mage world so they can’t risk riding brooms. But instead, he was perplexed that his best friend brought him to the dorms and as soon as he was inside Yuuta’s quarters, he realized what the raven was planning.

Ah. Teleportation.

Yuuta’s room was bigger than Toge’s—a perk of being a special-grade mage. Granted, as a first-grade mage himself, Toge’s place was pretty good as well. But Yuuta’s was just so much bigger and allowed additional space for a mini-library, a small armory, and of course, a whole empty room reserved for the runes and sigils drawn on random spots and corners over the walls and floors.

There was a pre-drawn teleportation circle at the left corner where Yuuta had taken him. Judging by the burn marks and faded lines, it seemed to be well-used. The special grade mage took his wand out and turned to Toge with a smile, “I’ll teleport us to the alley close to the place. It’ll be quicker.”

‘Why? Is there a teleportation circle around that area?’ signed Toge.

From what Toge remembered from his Rune Theory class, two teleportation circles were usually needed to travel: one from the current location and the other at the destination. That was why some circles are pre-drawn in public spaces so mages can secretly come and go. Toge usually doesn’t teleport outside campus so the only pre-marked locations that he could recall are the few scattered in Tokyo, some at the Shibuya station and one near his hometown that he occasionally uses.

However, there are exceptional mages like Gojo Satoru who possess the rare ability to open portals to different places without the need for pre-existing circles. Given that Yuuta was his protege, Toge did not doubt that the other had the potential to do the same. But seeing the smile that the raven was giving him as he took his wand out, he probably already learned it. “Nope, I kinda learned some new tricks. I’ve been practicing for a while and I was looking forward to showing you!”

For a moment, Toge felt his chest burst with pride towards Yuuta’s growth as a mage. Of course, his best friend has always been amazing and Toge was so happy to see him do better. It felt like yesterday when he couldn’t even fly his own broom! Before he could get emotional over it, Toge decided to divert the feeling by teasing the other, ‘Aww, I was hoping you’d take me to ride the pegasus instead.’

He was expecting to see Yuuta get shy and flustered over the reminder as always. Pegasus and Prince were his usual trigger words to reawaken his shyness. But what he did not expect was for Yuuta to pause unbothered and actually reconsider the idea, “Oh, you do? If you want, I could probably ask Gojo-sensei to—”

No, no. I was just joking!’ Toge shook his head, instantly shutting down the idea. Flying a broom outside was already risky enough but a pegasus would absolutely be insane. Imagine how angry the Magic Council would get if the non-mages saw a magical beast in broad daylight. Besides, he’s not actually interested in riding a pegasus. They’re majestic creatures for sure but if Toge were to ever mount any magical beast, he would love for it to be a dragon.

“A dragon, huh?” Yuuta muttered in thought and that’s how Toge belatedly learned that he accidentally signed his thoughts without realizing. Now that was embarrassing. Dragons were real, but they were very rare nowadays so it’s a dream Toge knew would never happen. The chances of riding one were close to zero but to his surprise, Yuuta earnestly said, “Alright. I’ll find a way to help you ride a dragon one day.”

What?

Toge blinked, taken aback by the seriousness in Yuuta’s tone. He must be joking. There’s no way Yuuta was actually considering searching for a dragon all for Toge’s mindless musings. No wise man would dare search out for those beasts, much less think of mounting them—only fools do that! But then again, Toge reminded himself of the love potion. And he of all people knows how stupid one can get in the face of love. Seriously, he thought. how potent was that potion?

‘No, no. I was just joking,’ Toge backtracked again and tried to change the topic. As far as he knows, love potions were dangerous because you’d have someone pretty much at the palm of your hand. Yuuta would be devoted and would hang on to every word Toge says. So he must be careful with his jokes for now. ‘Anyway, should we go? I’m hungry.’

At that, Yuuta dropped the topic and smiled. He held Toge’s hand again and with a quick flick of his wand, they were engulfed in bright light.

“Sorry, it took a while.” Yuuta finally came back, carrying a tray with their orders. The place sold a lot of onigiri with different fillings but they also had other things in the menu. Like the cute cat pudding that Toge had curiously picked. “The line was much longer than I expected.”

Toge placed his phone down, muting his notifications since his juniors were currently blowing up their group chat. With a smile, he shook his head and signed, ‘It’s fine. I didn’t wait long. I was just texting.’

“Oh? With whom?”

‘Just the juniors.’ Toge smiled wider when Yuuta placed the food in front of him—damn that smells good. It’s been a while since he’s had onigiri. He was going to thank Yuuji for this later. ‘They were asking me about a subject I took last year.’ He smoothly lied.

“I see,” Yuuta nodded, blue eyes focused on Toge’s hands so that he wouldn’t miss a single word. Once he realized that the other was done, he smiled and said, “I hope they won’t mind that I’m borrowing their favorite senpai for today.”

‘I’m not their favorite. Nobara likes Maki and I think Megumi looks up to you more. I don’t know about Yuuji though,’ Toge signed, shaking his head. He took a sip of the lemonade he ordered and hummed in satisfaction when the coolness of the drink quenched his thirst. He didn’t waste a second going after the onigiri next.

“I’m pretty sure they like your company a lot though,” The raven laughed—whether at his own comment or at the sight of Toge taking a huge first bite out of his tuna mayo onigiri, it was hard to tell. Either way, he leaned closer to wipe the mayonnaise that stained the corner of Toge’s mouth and said, “Although they’d have to wait until later. Otherwise, I’ll get jealous if you have your attention on them while we’re on our date.”

Date?

Toge almost choked in response, both at having Yuuta’s finger so close to his lips and at the admission that this was indeed a date. Although he did call it a date earlier, it still felt different to hear it from Yuuta’s lips. And huh? Yuuta getting jealous? Impossible! Why would he get jealous over Toge?

Love potion. Right.

“Cute,” Yuuta commented before—like the K-Dramas that Nobara forces Toge to watch sometimes— he brought his thumb close to his mouth and licked off the excess mayo. What the fuck. Not even minutes into their apparent date, Yuuta already performed a cliche move on him. Fuck you, love potion. Bring back Toge’s shy best friend.

But also, thank you.

Toge discreetly cleared his own throat and started eating slower this time, making sure not to eat messily lest he give Yuuta another chance to fluster him. If anyone should get flustered today, it will not be Toge. Stay calm. Stay cool. Do not fall for this Yuuta’s allure—it’s all the potion. If anything, Yuuta is more sweet, clumsy, cute—

“Hey Toge,” The raven called, pulling him out of his thoughts. Yuuta still had that goddamn attractive smile on his face as took a bite out of his own food. It shouldn’t be sexy to watch another man eat but Toge blames his rose-colored glasses for the fact that everything Yuuta does seems to look so good. “Can I ask you something?”

Anything. His heart replied in a heartbeat. But his brain told him to stay calm and not make a fool of himself. So he placed his onigiri down and signed as calmly as he could, ‘Go ahead.’

“Are you a book?”

What? Of course notwait. Toge almost choked and cursed himself. Is this what he thinks it is? Please don’t let it be a cringy pick-up line, Yuuta I swear to god

“Because I want to run my fingers down your spine while I bury my face in—urhh.”

Toge didn’t let him finish that awful line as he shoved a riceball down Yuuta’s throat. He was without the protection of his face mask right now, leaving his blushing face on full display. When did his sweet Yuuta turn into this flirty bi—the potion. Damn it. Toge is torn between happiness and exasperation.

Yuuta is cute. No matter how awful his flirting attempts are, Toge will always find him endearing. Just the thought that this is Yuuta’s method of flirting has Toge’s heart clenching in fondness. But at the same time, it was just too much. Like ‘giving him a heart attack’ kind of too much.

Yuuta can’t flirt to save his own life and Toge knows it’s downright horrendous. But it’s working anyway.

Anyhow, Yuuta was choking right in front of him so Toge decided to save his sexy sorry ass and offered him a drink. The raven quickly took the glass and chugged it down. After a few moments of trying to regain his bearings, he spluttered, “W-Why did you do that?”

Cringy,’ Toge signed, giving Yuuta his best unamused stare and hoping his blush wouldn’t be too obvious. Oh, he was so sure that Yuuta was under the spell now because why would he try to say a pick-up line unprompted like that? He faked a gag and added, ‘So cringy I could die.’

What he got afterwards was a very red and embarrassed Yuuta.

The rest of their date(!?) went well after that. Somewhat.

They fell back into a comfortable pace, one that was more familiar to Toge as they talked about what they had been doing lately. Omitting the love potion fiasco, Toge told Yuuta how he and the juniors have been hanging out more often. While Yuuta told him of his training sessions with Gojo and Maki as well as their preparation for an upcoming exam in Combat Magic.

‘Maki has been very busy nowadays,’ Toge signed, already finished with his onigiri and sipping on his lemonade. ‘I don’t see her often lately. Is she good?’

“Hm? Yeah,” Yuuta said, though there was a flicker of annoyance in his expression. The reason for that was explained in his next words, “The Zenin clan has been giving her problems again. They can’t seem to accept that Maki is actually graduating this year so they’ve been sabotaging her progress.”

‘Is that why she has so many remedial lessons all of a sudden?’ Toge had thought it was strange for Maki to have those since she’s always been such a diligent and hardworking mage. Her being busy has also made Nobara upset, hence why she was around Toge more often than usual nowadays. ‘Still, I’m proud of Maki. Despite her difficult circumstances, she’s doing really well.’

“Yeah, she’s amazing for that.” Yuuta smiled, proud of their close friend. He then turned to look at Toge and his smile turned fonder as his deep blue eyes softened, “You’re amazing too, you know.”

‘This isn’t about me.’

“Oh, now it is.” Yuuta chuckled, “You’re amazing too. I heard you were the top of your class again this year. Although, of course, I’m not surprised about that. The Inumaki Toge I know has always been smart, cool, talented, and a badass.”

‘It’s nothing compared to you though,’ Toge retaliated as he fought the growing blush again. If Yuuta wanted to fluster him with compliments then two can play this game. ‘You’re the reigning champion of the GMT, the prodigy, the genius plus I heard that you’ve already gotten many job offers this early. I could say you’re doing much better.’

“Oh, speaking of job offers,” The raven immediately changed the topic. Toge considered the slight redness on the other’s cheeks as a win and decided to let it slide. “How is the thing with Utahime-sensei going? Do you still plan to take it?”

Unlike most people, Toge doesn’t have a lot of options in the near future. Not until the prejudice towards his family dies down—which he thinks will take a really long while to change. But he had been given a once-in-a-lifetime offer by Utahime-sensei who was so impressed with his potion-making skills.

‘Yeah I am,’ Toge said with a huge smile on his face. This was something he was proud of—something he was looking forward to for the future. He had always thought that his best choice was to find work in the shadows but because of his hard work, he was given an opportunity to reach for something higher. ‘I’ve been reviewing for it. She said that if I can pass the board exam, she’ll recommend me.’

“That’s great!” Yuuta beamed, excitement shining in his eyes as if he was the one promised a bright future. “I know you’ll ace it! You always do. I can already picture it even—Inumaki Toge, topped the board exam and became the greatest alchemist of all time.”

‘Stop that,’ Toge said, both feeling giddy and shy at the same time. He still has a long way to go from being called a good alchemist—much less, the greatest one. Truthfully speaking, he was confident in his potion-making skills. But potions are merely a subset of Alchemy. He also needed to be good with other areas like transmutations, creation and so much more. ‘There’s still a lot I need to learn. I’m still working my way on it.’

“I know,” The raven said, smiling encouragely as he added. “But I believe in you. If there’s anyone out there who could turn the tides and always come out on top, it would be you. You’re one of the bravest, smartest, and strongest people I know. Like I said, you are amazing.”

Wow. Okay, that was not fair. Yuuta did not have to shoot Cupid’s arrow straight through his heart like that. Toge tried to shoot back words that could also fluster the raven but found himself speechless. It’s not that he doesn’t have good things to say about Yuuta—in fact, he has so much that it would take forever to put into words. But it was more so that he was feeling overwhelmed.

Feelings were never Toge’s strong suit. He was good at staying calm and rational in crucial situations. He was good at solving problems and weighing options. Despite his mischievous nature that peeks out every now and then, Toge is a reliable person. That’s why Maki, Yuuta, Panda, his juniors, and even Utahime-sensei trusted him. Because he was someone with a good head on his shoulder.

But he was not perfect—far from it actually.

He was good with his head but not with his heart. Growing up, his mother had always drilled into his mind that emotions needed to be controlled. In her own words, love makes you reckless, anger makes you impulsive and sadness makes you waver. If he wanted to survive, he needed to control his emotions.

But control was the wrong word for it. Because rather than controlling it, he was taught to suppress himself instead. If he hadn’t met Yuuta or his friends, perhaps Toge would have lived an empty life these past few years. It was thanks to them that he had felt loved, seen, and appreciated. It was through them that he learned to be gentle, to be caring and that it was alright to have fun every now and then.

It was also especially through Yuuta that he learned what it’s like to love. And that also includes the good and bad that comes with it.

Feelings were never Toge’s strong suit but they were Yuuta’s. The raven was always so earnest, wearing his heart on his sleeve. His kindness poured out like a waterfall, his concern came in waves and when he loved, he loved with all his heart. And that’s why Toge knew he had really fucked up.

Because if it wasn’t for the love potion, he would have accepted Yuuta’s words as the truth. Yet now, those words were poisoned by magic. It made Toge ache so badly—wishing that at the very least, Yuuta’s words were real and not a product of a love spell.

So instead of giving a response, Toge smiled at his best friend before shifting the topic. He pointed at the cat pudding they had ordered and signed, ‘Let’s eat. This one’s gonna melt if we leave it for too long.’

“Oh right! I almost forgot about it,” Yuuta perked up, giving his attention to the strange dessert in front of them. They’ve heard about pudding—a popular snack in the non-mage world. However, they were fascinated to find a cat-shaped one. Like a child, Yuuta started shaking his plate and beamed, “Look, Toge! It’s jiggling! Isn’t it cute?”

Toge found himself chuckling at the other’s amusement. For someone who grew up with non-mages, Yuuta somehow still found himself fascinated by these new discoveries. And while Toge was also curious, he found himself more drawn to the other’s reactions. Still, food was food and like the sweet tooth he is, Toge dove in and took a bite of the cat pudding’s ear. ‘Sweet’ he signed.

Yuuta nodded in response but didn’t take a bite yet. He was still playing, deeply fascinated with the jiggling of the cat-shaped pudding. It looked squishy, like those little squish toys that Nobara liked to collect. “You know, it’s so small and cute.” Yuuta suddenly said, “It kinda…reminds me of you. It’s like a little Toge.”

What?

Toge tilted his head in slight amusement with a mix of confusion. But then again, this was Yuuta. He should already be used to the strange way his best friend’s mind works. Humoring the other, he signed, ‘Why would you compare that thing with me? Is this you’re way of saying you wanna eat me?’

“What-No!” Yuuta gasped before his face dawned with horror. “Oh no. You’re right. I can’t do it anymore.”

Huh?

“I don’t think I can eat this anymore,” Yuuta looked down at the cat pudding with sympathy shining in his blue eyes. “It’s just like you. It even has your cute cheeks. It’s too cruel for me to eat it. I should just free it and let it live in bliss.”

‘Yuuta. It’s a pudding.’

“Yes but it’s just like you!” The raven lamented, grieving over a non-living object as if it had somehow gained sentience. “I can’t hurt you! So I can’t hurt this little Toge. My conscience can’t take it. D-Do you think if I cast Contego, I can protect it so that it can live longer?”

It will go bad.’

“I can learn some preservation spells.”

Yuuta, just eat it.’

The pout on Yuuta’s face was both equally endearing and frustrating. Toge didn’t know if the urge to punch him was due to his cute aggression or just something else.

It’s the love potion, Toge repeated to himself like a mantra. He is now a hundred percent certain that Yuuta was certainly, definitely, a hundred percent spelled because it was messing with his brain. Still, Toge felt something bubbling in the pit of his stomach and—oh no. I’m jealous of a pudding.

Fuck it. Toge raised his fork and plunged it into little Toge’s creamy form, taking a huge bite as Yuuta gasped in horror, witnessing the little thing's murder in cold blood.

Togesushii

No doubt now

Yuuta is absolutely spelled

Even though Toge had declared he would make the antidote as soon as possible, things did not go as he had planned.

Going to Room 307 the next day, he was more than prepared to work on his concoction. His apron was on, the pots and laddles were laid out for him to use and almost every ingredient was already prepared. But he missed one important thing: the fairydust.

After mistakingly making the antidotes for his juniors, he poured a generous amount of fairydust into the mixture. At the time, he was just panicking at the idea that his friends were lovespelled so he didn’t hesitate on using the S-class ingredient. However, now that he knew the truth, he was regretting that decision.

Because he was currently facing a new obstacle: he only had at least three scoops of fairydust left and that was not enough. Normally, his antidotes would work fine without these premium ingredients. But love potions were potent and on top of that, Yuuta was a special grade mage. His resistance to potions had increased over time as he got stronger and stronger—which is both a good and a bad thing.

Toge used to be disappointed when his concoctions started to work less on his best friend but he brushed that feeling off after he reminded himself that this would also make Yuuta stronger.

The special grade mage having a higher resistance to these potions was a double-edged sword. While it may keep him safe from many unwanted effects, it also makes it difficult for him to benefit from the good ones. As such, most antidotes hardly also work on Yuuta. That’s why S-class ingredients were so expensive because they were strong enough to penetrate a powerful mage’s high resistance.

And now, without fairydust, it would lower the chances of his antidote working on his best friend.

Toge was panicking. But at least he wasn’t panicking alone. Megumi and Yuuji were with him as they paced back and forth, brainstorming for a solution. Ideas were exchanged: from other ways of purchasing fairydust to possible substitutes for the ingredients. Yuuji had asked, “Why don’t you just order a new one, senpai?”

“He can’t,” Megumi answered for him with a frown on his face. “S-class ingredients aren’t easily accessible to everyone. Normally, you need to be licensed to even purchase them. Or at the very least, be a first-grade mage. However, none of us here qualifies for that.”

“But isn’t Inumaki-senpai a first-grade mage?” The pink-haired boy asked curiously, tilting his head towards the upperclassman who only sighed in response. “Can’t senpai just purchase a new one?”

‘Normally, yes.’ Toge signed in response, a bitter taste lingering in his mouth as his anxiety continued to grow. ‘But the problem is that I’m an Inumaki. If I were to request for an S-class ingredient, they’d require a full report from me and I’d likely be observed.’

“In other words, it’s too risky.” Megumi muttered, a quiet anger behind his eyes. It’s no secret how much all his friends hated the prejudice towards Toge. If it were any other first-grade mage, their ranks would be respected and they’d be easily given access to these things. But due to his lineage, he always had to face some kind of suspicion from people. “They would suspect that senpai was up to something and we really can’t afford an investigation right now. The love potion incident aside, it would take months and we only have less than three weeks before the Celestial dance.”

The dance. That’s right. Toge was reminded of another problem too. He wanted to cure Yuuta before the dance happened. Because if the legend about the Celestial Dance was true, then he’d want to give his best friend the right to choose who he wanted to be with forever. It was not good for Toge to impose this on him. In fact, it was not okay at all that he caused all this trouble in the first place.

He really fucked up.

It’s been a long time since he’s thought of this but Toge really really hates himself right now.

But of course, self-blame and hatred can always be addressed later. He’ll have to worry about that when his juniors aren’t in the room with him. So with a heavy sigh, he pushed those thoughts away and told them, ‘It’s okay. I’ll find a way. Perhaps I can try to substitute it with something else. If I collect moonlight for seven days, I think it will be enough to substitute the fairydust.’

“But senpai,” Megumi frowned as he reminded him. “There will be no moonlight for a while, remember? Because of the upcoming planetary alignment, all access to celestial magic is forbidden right now. Besides, it would be too risky.”

Magic is broad and diverse and there are so many types and variations of it. One of the strongest yet oldest ones was celestial magic. After all, it was believed that the sun, moon, and stars were the primordial source of energy that gave birth to magic. Thus drawing energy from them was guaranteed to be powerful.

There were certain methods that allowed a person to collect this energy which can be used by Toge for his antidote. However, just as Megumi had said, the upcoming planetary alignment complicated things.

Magic tends to be stronger when the planets align which is not always good. The moonlight Toge could collect around this time would surely be powerful and potent yet it would also be very dangerous. There are many unknown side effects and Toge doesn’t want to do any more harm towards Yuuta—intentionally or unintentionally.

So he had to rack his brains for other solutions.

The three of them exchanged more ideas until Yuuji decided to ask, “Okkotsu-senpai originally got it for you, didn’t he? What if you asked him to get one for you again? I’m sure he’d be more than happy to do it.”

‘I can’t do that.’ Toge instantly shut down the idea. He knew that the other’s suggestion made sense and it would also be the fastest way to solve the current problem. But at the same time, a part of Toge didn’t want to do it for various reasons.

Firstly, he didn’t want to use Yuuta like that. It was already bad enough that he spelled him, it’d be even worse if he used him to get something so expensive and rare. Secondly, what would he say? What if Yuuta asked what he was using it for? Or what if he asked where the previous fairydust went and got suspicious? There were too many risks with that and not one he was willing to take.

Lastly, and the strongest reason, was that he felt ashamed. Perhaps it was pride, or maybe it was just guilt, but a huge part of him didn’t want to ask something like that from Yuuta. He could get this done. He didn’t need to trouble the other any more than he already had. He can do this. He has always found ways.

He can do this.

Megumi had supported Yuuji’s suggestion and he tried to convince Toge to see reason, but the latter was firm. Needless to say, Megumi was not happy with the outcome but as he was true to his words, he respected Toge’s decision and said, “In the end, it’s up to you, senpai. We’ll just support you however we can.”

‘Thank you.’

“But just know this: we really don’t have the luxury of time. Your options are limited so please, do think about it.” He urged, no malice in his tone but just plain concern. “Sometimes you have to make a decision that will break your heart but will give peace to your soul. So even if you find it hard to ask help from Okkotsu-senpai, when we’re out of options, please try.”

‘Okay,’ Toge decided to promise but his words felt empty even to himself. Whether or not Megumi realized that, he didn’t say anything.

The events that came after that were a huge blur.

He was in and out of classes and whenever he was free, he would either be with Yuuta or spend time almost going crazy trying to find a solution to his fairydust problems. His juniors kept chatting with him, Maki and Panda also seemed to have caught on that something was wrong but Toge tried his best to avoid their questions and divert their attention elsewhere.

Even Yuuta started noticing that he had been acting strange. And sweet as always, the raven was quick to show his concern. He constantly asked if Toge was okay, if he was eating well, or if he was upset with anything. He’d offer to help or to do anything Toge wanted. The way his blue eyes were filled with concern made Toge’s heart feel both warm and pained at the same time.

The guilt eating him up was getting stronger day by day. And the more people were so concerned for him, the more he felt unworthy of their care. Toge deserved none of that, not after what he has done. Not after he has betrayed Yuuta’s trust and manipulated his feelings like that.

These were the feelings he had desperately tried to bury. But as the days passed, they were only getting stronger. It didn’t help that so many others were constantly looking at him too, eyeing his every move. He knows the gossip and rumors about him were spreading like wildfire lately. He was used to it—should have been used to it. Alas, there were days when trying to stay strong became too tiring.

Then one day,  Maki texted him.

The continuous vibrations on his phone let him know that Maki continued to send more messages, either to scold him or to pry for an answer—Toge didn’t have the chance to check. He set his phone down as soon as he noticed Yuuta in the corner of his eye. Ever since their lunch date about a week ago, the two of them have been spending more time lately.

Yuuta was—and Toge struggled to find a better, non-cliche way to phrase this— a perfect boyfriend. Although they technically weren’t dating. Ever since he love spelled his best friend, he was experiencing what it’s like to be the object of the raven’s affection. He walked Toge to his classes, peppered him with kisses, handled him with utmost care and if he could, Yuuta would steal all the stars in the sky and lay them at Toge’s feet.

“Sorry, did I make you wait too long?” Yuuta asked in lieu of a greeting, a gentle smile on his face as he walked up to him. Even though the bell just rang and if anything, the raven had arrived way too quickly, he remained apologetic. “I hope not. We were just held up in class a bit. Nanami-sensei was letting us know that he planned to give an exam and then—ah sorry, I’m rambling again, am I?”

‘It’s okay,’ Toge signed, smiling under his mask. He loved hearing Yuuta ramble and he also enjoyed learning about the other’s day. If he could, he would gladly sit all day listening to his voice. But alas, he doesn’t have that luxury right now. ‘Shall we go? I have somewhere I need to be.’

“Huh? Oh yeah sure!” The raven beamed, instantly reaching to lace his fingers with Toge’s. There’s that too—Yuuta has been very touchy nowadays. If he’s not holding hands with the potions mage, then he’d put a hand over his shoulder or wrap an arm around his waist. Almost as if he wanted the world to know that Toge was his.

A part of Toge wondered if Yuuta would be the possessive type of lover, or if this was just another effect of the potion. But there’s really no point in contemplating that. Once he finds a way to successfully finish his antidote, it’s not like he’ll get the chance to know. Megumi said he doesn’t have to confess to Yuuta about what he did, and that the antidote would suffice.

But Toge, no matter how selfish he was, wouldn’t be able to bear leaving his best friend in the dark. Yuuta has the right to know what Toge did—of what his own best friend did. Yuuta had the right to know that Toge was foolish and potentially dangerous and then after that…whether or not he wants to remain friends with Toge will be up to him. Whichever his decision would be, Toge will accept it.

Even though it hurts.

“By the way, Toge,” Yuuta said, snapping him out of his thoughts. He was so deep in his mind that he didn’t noticed that they had arrived at Room 307. While Toge may have frequented the place, it’s been a while since he came here with Yuuta—with their hectic schedules along with the lunch dates they’ve been having lately. So it was a surprise that they were here today. “Itadori-kun talked to me about something.”

Toge tilted his head in question, silently asking for the other to elaborate. Yuuji is like a little brother to Toge and he knows it’s the same for Yuuta. In fact, all the juniors—while menaces in their own ways—were like family to both of them. However, it was quite rare for Yuuji to reach out to Yuuta over anything. It’s not that they weren’t close—just that Yuuta and Yuuji don’t have a lot of common interests.

“We talked about you.”

And then Toge’s heart dropped there. His thoughts came to a quick pause before alarm bells started ringing. Because there are so many things that could go wrong based on that. For one, Yuuji was the worst at keeping secrets. And he just so happened to hold a dangerous secret with him right now—one that was related to Toge.

Was he jumping to conclusions? Maybe. But what else was there to talk about him?

Fear crept up his mind, slithering around like a snake holding its prey captive before it went in for the kill. His breath hitched and he froze in place, dreading where this topic might go. He wondered if Yuuji exposed his fault to Yuuta and that his best friend now knew the truth. Although this idea passed by his mind before: another way to break a love potion was awareness. If Yuuta was aware, he could break himself out of the spell.

But Toge didn’t opt for that—even if it was one of the easiest solutions. No need to worry about the fairydust or the antidote when Yuuta can free himself right then and there. But if he did that, Toge would feel—he didn’t know what to feel actually. Inadequate? Insincere? Dishonest? He would feel many things but one thing’s for sure: he won’t feel good.

Perhaps wanting to make the antidote himself was also him being selfish. He started this mess, thus he wanted to be the one to fix it. So that at the very least, even if things fall apart, he can comfort himself with the fact that he did his best to fix things. He was really selfish, wasn’t he? At the end of the day, he was still doing things for himself—to make himself feel better about everything.

There’s no way Yuuta could possibly ever love someone like him. If not for the potion, the special grade mage probably wouldn’t even look at him the way he does these past few days. And why would he?

In a world full of talented mages with powerful lineages, Toge has nothing. Literally nothing to give.

He could die a thousand times and offer his heart, body, and soul and it would never be enough. There is nothing he could offer. He is an outcast while Yuuta is beloved. He is a monster while Yuuta is a treasured prince. He is an Inumaki while Yuuta was so much more. Even his first-grade status is nothing next to Yuuta’s special-grade title.

Nothing.

There’s nothing he could give Yuuta, and nothing he could do to deserve him. No matter what he does, it will never be enough. He will never be enough. And on top of that, he tried to manipulate Yuuta. As if he couldn’t even go any lower. He ended up breaking their trust

He doesn’t deserve him.

He can only offer nothing, so it is right that he gets nothing in return.

But if Yuuji slipped and Yuuta snapped out of the spell before Toge could even redeem himself, finding forgiveness would be an impossible task. He thought he had more time but at this rate, he might lose Yuuta sooner than he expected.

To his surprise, however, Yuuta didn’t look angry. If anything, he just smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I got it.” He said in a gentle tone before adding, “All you had to do was tell me, Toge. You know I would never hold anything against you. You can ask me anything—literally anything and I’d do my best to give it to you.”

Huh?

Yuuta…was not mad? Toge was now utterly confused. He always knew Yuuta was kind but surely he was not so kind that he’d overlook what he did? Toge committed a crime—he tried to manipulate his feelings and possibly ruined his reputation. He was the worst of the worst so why would Yuuta forgive him that easily?

But then Maki has always told him that he thinks too much. That he may be quiet but his head was the noisiest place he could be in—leading him to often jump to conclusions faster than lightning. And he was once again reminded of this when Yuuta continued.

“Don’t worry. I already placed an order,” the special grade mage said, huffing slightly. “It’s not nice of Itadori-kun to do that to you so I may have scolded him a bit. But he’s a nice kid so I’m sure he learned his lesson and won’t do it anymore. As for you, you know you can always ask me anything!”

What? Toge was now even more confused and rather than retreating back into his jumbled mess of a mind, he decided to ask. ‘What do you mean?’

“Fairydust,” Yuuta simply said as if it was the answer to everything. But he must’ve noticed Toge’s confusion because he added, “I was worried over you lately. You seemed sad and stuff and…I wanted to make you happy. But then Itadori-kun came to me and confessed that he accidentally spilled your fairydust. That’s why you’ve been sad lately, right?”

It took a moment for Toge to fully process things. But after that, he didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry when Yuuta told him that he assumed Toge was sad over the ingredient (in which, he wasn’t far from the truth). So when their junior confessed to his mistake, Yuuta instantly decided to get a new one for him. “You can always tell me if you want something, okay? I really don’t mind. As long as it makes you happy, I will do anything, Toge.”

If Toge’s heart fluttered that moment, that was something only he needed to know.

Things were more or less smoother after that. With the fairydust problem off his mind, the storm clouds over his head have finally cleared up even just a little. It was still a waiting game, due to all the rave about the Celestial dance, deliveries were slow and he’d have to wait four days before the ingredient would arrive.

Although, it would normally take a month but Toge had a feeling that Yuuta pulled some strings.

Other than that, there wasn’t much for him to do but wait. He did sift through his cookbooks, contemplating on what to make for Yuuta. Since it was such a potent spell, he knew the antidote would have to be of a larger quantity. Masking the taste of that would be hard so cookies won’t suffice.

In the end, Toge has decided he won’t do any of that. Since he was going to confess about the love potion anyway, he might as well be direct with the antidote instead of sneaking it through sweets. Still, he didn’t want an empty-handed apology so he thought he might also make something for Yuuta—and if in case, it might be the last thing he’d be able to make for his soon-to-be ex-best friend, then he should at least make the best damn thing.

Still, Yuuta was not much of a food person. And it’s also hard to tell what he liked because he seemed to enjoy everything Toge made anyway. Nobara said he’d accept anything, but that wasn’t the answer Toge was looking for. He wanted to make something really good, really special for his best friend. And anything the girl suggested, he had turned down.

Eventually, she got pissed and said, “I swear to the gods, I’ll shove these chopsticks so far up in your ass that you’ll have splinters in your throat if you don’t shut the fuck up.” Nobara growled, pointing said chopsticks in his direction. “Either you choose to make something or you don’t. I’m telling you, Okkotsu-senpai will love anything you make.”

No, he won’t. He’s just too nice to say no but whatever, Nobara.

Needless to say, Toge was feeling cranky after that. They just don’t get it—they all seem to not understand the gravity of the situation and how terrible the aftermath might be. When he confesses, he knows he will be a huge mess from the fallout. They all seem to be confident about Yuuta taking his admission in stride. They say it will be fine, he won’t get mad, he will understand, and so on.

But what if it won’t be fine? What if he gets mad? What if he won’t understand?

Yuuta was kind but surely there was a limit to that kindness. The very thought that he, a person Yuuta trusted, was the one to cross that line was painful to think about. He’s grateful for his juniors’ help and he wouldn’t blame them for anything but, just for now—just at this moment of anxiety, anger, and everything else mixed in, he can’t help but be frustrated at them.

They just don’t understand how scared Toge is. In the same way, he just can’t understand how they’re so calm about this. How they’re so confident that the worst won’t happen. They don’t understand what it’s like to be shunned by the world—what it means to be an Inumaki. They don’t understand what it’s like to walk on a tightrope, balancing carefully so that you never slip. Because all it takes is one mistake for everything to fall apart.

And Toge knows everything will fall apart—he just has a hard time preparing himself for it.

But of course, his heart was soft and he couldn’t stay upset with his friend for too long. After a few cookies and a half-hug, Toge and Nobara were back to their usual routine: with the senior stressing out and his menace of a junior just enjoying the show. Things weren’t bad for a while—but they weren’t also good. It’s like being underwater —all the sounds felt muted and he was holding his breath.

It was the constant feeling that something was going to happen but he didn’t know exactly what. Nobara said he was just anxious, Megumi suggested he give his mind a break while Yuuji offered to watch a movie with him if it helped clear his mind. And then Maki and Panda suddenly cleared their schedules and decided that it was high time they joined him for lunch since it’s been so long.

Yuuta was pouty about having to share Toge again, but nevertheless, it was fun for all of them to be complete after so long. And although he never said it out loud, he was happy that it happened. With all of them being so busy, especially as seniors, it did wonders for his mind to actually banter with Maki in the flesh or lean against Panda’s soft fur while they ate lunch together.

Everything was fine.

Until suddenly, it was not.

It happened one afternoon when Toge was on his way to the library. It was one of those rare times when he was alone and everyone else was busy or occupied. Panda was stuck with his elective course, Maki was training, Yuuta had been pulled away by Gojo again and the three juniors were in their classes. So Toge was left with his own thoughts and had no one to pull him out of it. Thus, to keep himself occupied, he thought of heading to the library and borrowing a few books to read.

That was when he found himself ambushed.

While the rumors and stares never died down, nobody has ever approached him since the last time in the classroom. He had thought that people learned to keep their distance or start minding their own business. But he should have expected that they were just waiting for him to be alone. Toge was not dumb—he knew he had some powerful friends. Okkotsu Yuuta is one of them, Panda is closely related to the Principal, Maki is feared despite her tainted reputation, Yuuji was rumored to harbor some evil spirit inside him, Nobara is the best hex mage you wouldn't want to mess with and Megumi is rumored to be the next Zenin head.

Even if he was no longer feared, people probably stirred clear of him despite all the rumors because they were wary of the friends he surrounded himself with. But now that he was alone, they must’ve thought he would be an easy target—that he’d be helpless and easily bullied by them.

They thought wrong.

Jujutsu Academy was a magic school.

It was already one thing to put a bunch of teenagers under one campus. But it’s another thing when those emotionally driven kids were capable of wreaking havoc with magic. Oftentimes it’s hard to prevent fights from happening, even when there are threats of punishments and expulsion.

So instead of stopping them, rules were made to mandate these events. Magical duels were permitted to enable students to settle their differences, but also keep them supervised to avoid excessive damages. Toge was no stranger to this concept, having been challenged in the past because people wanted to see what the Inumaki child was capable of.

He had a terrible reputation back in his second year because of this—because of one brutal victory he had. It made people stir clear of him since then and so, it’s been over a year since Toge has last dueled anyone. He had also been hoping he never had to fight at all until he graduated but alas, things don’t always go according to plan.

For the first time in a long while, Toge was challenged into a duel again.

And almost as if fate wanted to punish him, he wasn’t just challenged by one but instead, three students. By school rules, Toge had the right to turn down these challenges. However, since Magical duels were made to settle disputes, turning down a challenge was generally considered a way of admitting that you were the one in the wrong. Twisted as it was, there was no such thing as a perfect system and this was one of its many flaws.

(“Love makes you reckless. Anger makes you impulsive. Sadness makes you waver,” He could hear his mother’s words like an echo. “If you want to survive out there, don’t let yourself be controlled by your emotions. Always think twice before you act.”)

In times like these, his mother’s teachings always came to his mind. While not raised with affection, Toge was raised to survive—to learn how to exist in a world where you are constantly judged for your every move. If Toge was going to be wise, it would be best to turn down the challenge. He can let them think they were the ones who are right—he’s used to false rumors about him anyway.

Fighting three in a row was too much of a hassle and Toge wasn’t even sure if it was worth it. He didn’t care what others thought of him—all that mattered was what his friends thought. Anything else be damned. Besides, if he accepted the challenge, he’d only be making things worse for himself. Because instead of letting the rumors and stares towards him die down, it would only attract more attention to him.

So if he were wise, he would decline and walk away.

But alas, his mother was right as always. Anger makes one impulsive. When one of the challengers—a man Toge didn’t know the name of— mentioned Yuuta, his resolve started crumbling. “It’s not right,” they said. “Why would someone like Okkotsu Yuuta mingle with the likes of you? I bet you used your cursed speech on him.”

Stupid. Toge wanted to say. Yuuta was a special-grade mage, he was much stronger than him. If they think that Toge’s cursed speech can penetrate Yuuta’s defenses then they were underestimating the second strongest mage of today’s time. These were nothing but empty words made to force him to fight back. But Toge will be alright, he was patient and used to this. However, the next words unexpectedly started to sting—

“There’s no way he would choose to go to the dance with you. If anything, you probably used your cursed magic to force him. It doesn’t make sense at all.” The person said with disdain, “Why would he, who can literally have anyone he wants, choose to be with someone like you? Aren’t you ashamed?”

—because they were a reflection of his own thoughts. And even if he’s been thinking of it almost every day, it doesn’t make the words hurt less when they were said out loud. In fact, it made it hurt even more. Because now, it was out there. It was no longer just a noise in his head—no, it was now words acknowledged by someone other than him.

And that made it feel more true—made it feel heavier.

These words thrown at him were familiar. He should be used to them: outcast, snake, doesn’t belong, a living curse, a natural born villain, and someone who could never be accepted, much less loved. These were words that Toge grew up with and over the years, he knew he should be numb to it.

But maybe—no, definitely— he had grown softer after all. He was so used to being around people who actually cared for him these days that he forgot to maintain his shields. His armor has rusted over the years and now, these words that were supposed to be like needles felt like spears piercing through his skin.

But the last straw had been—

“Or maybe Okkotsu-san is actually crazy,” Someone said, he didn’t know—their faces blurred and swirling like shadows—taunted. He didn’t even realize that a small crowd had already formed around them. “Weren’t they friends since long ago? Perhaps Okkotsu-san was into them freaks after all. Doesn’t that make him one as well?”

—the thought that he was dragging Yuuta down with him.

He can take it when people say bad things about him. He may be angry, hurt, or sad but he will be fine. He’ll clench his teeth, force himself to become numb, and then walk away. But if it was Yuuta—the very idea that the same words used to hurt him were now used to taint his Yuuta was unacceptable. That was something Toge couldn’t let go of.

By then, his mother’s words were gone from his mind and his anger made the decision. Toge didn’t let them speak another word as he pulled his own wand out and accepted their challenge. He broke his vow to himself—that he would never fight again. He might end up hating himself for this decision later but right now, he was so mad. He was so angry that he couldn’t help himself anymore.

He may have not fought in a long time but that does not mean he would lose. Because if there was one rumor that these fools should’ve paid attention to,  it was that Toge has never ever lost a duel before.

Toge never thought the day would come when he’d point his wand at someone else again. The last time he fought, there was blood everywhere. Things had gone haywire, he was heavily injured and all that ran through his mind was the drive to win—to bring the other person down.

It was a scandal.

An Inumaki covered in blood in the aftermath of a brutal duel.

Since then, Toge swore to never fight again. He retreated into the safety of his room, and brewed potions that helped people, not hurt them. He often watched Yuuta and Maki spar, sometimes with Panda or his juniors too. But that’s all he did—watch. He swore to himself he would never fight again. That he would put that all behind him and live a much more peaceful life until he graduates.

That he’ll do his best to live not as the cursed Inumaki but just as Toge.

But alas, things happened. At the end of the day, he has no one to blame but himself. If he had never made the love potion, Yuuta would’ve never even asked him out and that means no one would’ve bothered him. If there’s anyone to blame, it’s himself. He knows that.

He can’t help it anyway.

Toge was angry. He hasn’t felt this angry in a long time. He wasn’t even sure if he was angry at the three mages who challenged him, or if he was angry at himself. All he knows is that he was angry—and when a person is angry, they tend to become impulsive.

That was why he was fighting in the first place. If he wasn’t angry, maybe he would’ve been wise enough to turn the duel down and walk away unscathed. Bruised pride but at the very least still untouched.

The wand felt foreign in his grip—even if he had owned it for years at this point. But whenever the magic flowed through from his veins to the tip of his fingers, he felt this strong pull at the back of his mind—the heavy weight of guilt. The first challenger was in front of him, sweating profusely and panting heavily.

Toge has landed several hits on him while the other hasn’t even managed to touch the outcast once. Despite all the bravado from earlier, the way the challenger fights was too simple and straightforward—almost elementary in fact. They cast a fireball that Toge easily disperses with a flick of his wand before sending back an even bigger one.

And when they tried to sneak an exstirpo on him, Toge easily blocked it with his contego before rapidly firing an elemental spell in their direction. They tried to dodge the attack but ended up losing their footing and without missing a beat, Toge used gravity magic to send them sideways and throw them out of the field.

Victory and losses are decided in many ways in a duel. One, when a person is knocked out or rendered unable to continue, then they lose. Two, if they yield, then they lose. And three, a field or barrier is cast when a duel begins. If any of the mages exit the field intentionally or unintentionally, it is counted as a loss. Despite his anger, Toge plans to win either by the second or third option.

As soon as it was registered that the other mage was out of the field, the win was given to Toge. He didn’t have time to revel on that though, as the second challenger came forward without missing a beat. A bigger crowd has formed around them, and Toge would be lying if he said he wasn’t feeling uneasy having so many spectators.

Magical duels like these were common events so people seldom crowd over fights. However, there were cases like these when they did draw too much attention. There were no big stages or referees, just a field that automatically gets cast when a challenge is accepted. Toge doesn’t really know much of the details of how that works—he does know that it has something to do with the runes littered all over the school but that’s about it. Maki and Yuuta are more knowledgeable in this area.

That’s a thought for another time.

Toge snapped back into focus as soon as the next challenger came forward. He recognizes the face of his next opponent but not their name. He recalled seeing this guy in the same classes as Yuuta and Maki whenever he waited for his friends—that must mean he was also well-trained in Combat magic like them.

The potion mage’s concentration instantly doubled, feeling wary towards his next opponent. They had dark hair, sharp eyes, and a tall, buff figure with a cocky expression on his face. He looked very much like Gaston in the Beauty and the Beast movie that he watched with Yuuta recently. So Toge decides to nickname the guy Gaston in his head.

Gaston stood at the other end of the field, his wand held steady, eyes fixed on his smaller opponent. He sneered, twirling his ebony wand between his fingers before casting the first spell. “Ignis Spiralis!” He cried, and a spiral of flames erupted from his wand, hurling towards Toge.

It was a higher-level spell than the ones his previous opponent used, but Toge recognized that Yuuta had cast it in some of his battles. But his best friend’s spell had been stronger and if memory serves him right, the way to counter this one was— Aqua Scutum! He mentally recited as a wall of water materialized around him, effectively dousing the flames.

Undeterred, Gaston shifted tactics, no longer staying stationary as he ran forward and cast, “Ventus Impetus!” A powerful gust of wind surged towards Toge, aiming to knock him off balance. Since the other had a bigger and sturdier build than him, Toge had a feeling that he was probably trying to resort to close combat.

He recalled Maki and Yuuta mentioning that despite being called Magical duels, it’s dangerous to rely on spells alone. Different mages had different specialties and there were some who excelled in hand-to-hand or melee combat with magic that enhanced strength, speed, and enchanted weapons. Maki and Yuuta were masters at those, especially the former. That’s why those two were physically fit to be able to adapt to situations like these.

Toge was by no means physically weak too— having exercised with his friends from time to time, but he knew that Gaston’s bigger size gave the other guy an advantage over him. Coupled with the fact that there’s not much he knows about his opponent’s strength, he quickly decides that it’s best to avoid getting close to the man if possible.

He learned from experience that it’s always better to be cautious than to be reckless when it comes to unknown factors. Analyze and understand his opponent first before striking. With his quick reflexes, he cast Terra Firmus—the ground beneath him solidified and rose, anchoring him firmly and blocking the gust of wind.

Without missing a beat, he cast consecutive spells—he kept himself elevated as he flooded the floor with water before bolts of lightning shot from his wand, crackling towards the soaked tiles, and electricity spread throughout the field.

The other mage was also quick to react, raising his wand and yelling “Contego!”. A shadowy dome enveloped him, absorbing all the impact and with a quick flick, dispersed both of Toge’s spells.

Not only is he physically strong but he’s good with his spells too. Toge noted.

“My turn,” Gaston said coldly, whispering an incantation under his breath as he raised his wand. Dark tendrils snaked from out of his own wand and aimed to ensnare Toge. But the shorter mage leaped high, narrowly avoiding the attack.

He nimbly jumped and backflipped, avoiding every attempt to grab him. In his last flip, he pointed his wand toward Gaston and cast Lumen— emitting a bright flash of light that caused his opponent to cry in surprise, closing his eyes, and got momentarily blinded. Toge seized this moment of weakness and prepared his final spell.

Ventus Impetus! He used the same spell against his opponent, using a strong gust of wind to push him out of the field. Gaston had resisted, still covering his eyes and using his own tendrils to keep himself rooted to the ground. But Toge’s spell was stronger— he released a huge output of his own magic, effectively overpowering his bigger opponent and finally pushing him out of bounds.

The field dispersed as soon as Toge took another victory.

He can't relax yet though. Only one more to fight and this will all be over with— or at least that’s what he thought. He was about to prepare himself for the last battle when he heard a familiar voice frantically call for him amidst the growing crowd. He looked around just in time to see Maki emerge from the sea of people with a tense look on her face, “Toge!”

He felt a mix of relief and guilt upon seeing her come. It was a relief to see a familiar face amidst all the piercing eyes looking at him right now. But at the same time, he had sworn to never fight again, and to be seen by one of his closest friends like this, he felt remorseful for succumbing to his anger.

Maki didn’t seem to be concerned about that though. Instead, her eyes racked his body for any signs of injury. As soon as she was certain that he was unharmed, she sighed and said, “I’m glad you’re okay or else I might have to beat someone up. Not that I mind doing that, I’m getting sick of fighting the dummies anyway.”

‘It’s not yet over,’ Toge signed regretfully. As much as he doesn’t want to fight now that Maki is here, he has already confirmed that he will accept the challenges. He turned to the last mage— unlike the other two, this one didn’t seem to be eagerly jumping for the chance to fight him. Perhaps he was hesitant now that he saw Toge was capable of. It would be best if that was the case.

At the same time, Toge feels wary. He doesn’t know much about his next adversary while the other had time to observe him fight. So he’ll have to be very careful in the next duel: study his opponent, and find an opening. Maki seemed to have a different idea though as she stepped in front of him, “Okay, tag out.”

Huh?

Toge blinked in surprise, turning to Maki in question. The girl sighed and said, “I’m a Combat mage and you aren’t. Plus, you’ve already fought the first few, right? In cases like these, you are allowed to have someone represent you instead. So I’ll take your place.”

He instantly shook his head, not wanting to burden Maki. This was his bone to pick and that’s what Magical duels are about: to solve their grievances through skill and magic. It wouldn’t be right to have Maki pick up his slack. Since he accepted this battle, it was only right for him to see it through to the end. It’s already bad enough that he made a lot of mistakes, it’s even worse if they—

“I know what you’re thinking and I’m telling you to stop it,” Maki said, cutting through his thoughts as if she could read him. “You’re not gonna burden me by letting me fight— in fact, you’re doing me a favor. I’m itching for a battle. And besides, we’re friends. If you want me to kick someone’s ass, I’ll send them to the sky for you.”

‘But Maki, I— ‘ Toge’s words were cut off as he gasped in surprise as a sharp pain shot through his wrist. He looked down and found that his skin was turning red and felt excruciatingly hot, and instantly turned around the source of the attack to find a pissed Gaston. It seems the man was not happy about losing and attacked Toge when he wasn’t looking.

Maki’s reaction was instant, turning to the guy with fury behind her eyes.

Everything that happened felt like an eternity when in reality, it was only seconds. It’s as if the world was in slow motion as Maki swiftly drew her weapon towards Gaston while the guy was preparing to launch another attack with his wand. But before her blade and his flames could meet, a familiar figure had cut in between and subdued both attacks.

Okkotsu Yuuta.

It was a familiar back— one that made Toge safe. But at that moment, instead of the usual soft, reliable, and gentle Yuuta he was used to, what stood before them was someone who could be closely described as something closer to a demon. With magic overflowing out of his person in raging waves, almost making Toge sick from the excessive amount of energy and fury radiating from it.

“Maki,” Yuuta said, voice eerily calm yet cold like ice yet dangerous. In fact, everything about him felt dangerous at the moment. If Toge were to succumb to his instinct, he’d be fleeing right now. But he kept himself rooted on the spot because this was Yuuta. Yuuta would never hurt anyone, right? “Please tend to Toge’s wounds…I’ll handle things from here.”

For a moment, Toge thought Maki would complain— she hated being told what to do and also hated being interrupted from a fight. But it seems that she also understood something in the other’s voice because she complied and laid her weapon down. She wordlessly turned to Toge and checked to see if his wrist was okay. Maki can’t use magic like most of them but she was fully equipped with weapons and potions and was extremely skilled in utilizing them.

She applied something to help soothe the burn on his wrist but Toge’s attention was on Yuuta. And it wasn’t just him— everyone in the room was watching with bated breath as Okkotsu Yuuta, the most desired mage in the academy, was nothing like the charming prince he always appeared to be. Instead, he was showcasing the other side of him— the reigning Champion, the undefeated, the strongest mage in the room.

“Anyone who wants to challenge Inumaki Toge,” Yuuta announced. “will have to go through me.”

It’s over.

Toge has finally done it.

He has finally ruined Yuuta’s pristine reputation now. After his best friend’s declaration, no one in their right mind had challenged him. Who would? Everyone saw what he was capable of when he won the Grand Magic Tournament. And even if they didn’t, anyone could sense how dangerous he was at that moment. Everyone backed off and that should be a good thing but it wasn’t.

Because now, people will see Yuuta as a monster and it will ruin his future.

All because of Toge— everything was always his fault. If he hadn’t given him the love potion, then this whole thing wouldn’t even happen. If he hadn’t accepted the challenge, then Yuuta wouldn’t need to come in and interfere. Or better yet, if he had fought better and finished things faster, then maybe Maki wouldn’t even be worried at all. If he had noticed Gaston, he wouldn't have been hurt and be a burden again.

The bottom line is: he fucked up again.

He was alone with Yuuta at the moment. The special mage refused to let him go until he was completely sure that Toge was alright. Even after Maki had patched him up, Yuuta insisted on healing his wrist just in case there were any underlying injuries that he didn’t notice. It was typical of him to overthink but Toge couldn’t find it in him to stop the other.

So that’s how they found themselves in their current position, sitting on Toge’s bed while Yuuta thoroughly checked on him. Nothing but a silent yet heavy atmosphere wrapped around them. He could tell that his best friend wanted to talk, probably to ask why the duel even happened. Toge isn’t even sure how he would explain that— he got angry?

After years of patience and self-discipline, a mere excuse like that felt silly. It felt immature. It felt so unlike Toge. Love does blind people, doesn’t it? He’s such a fuck up that it isn’t even funny anymore. When Yuuta was finally done inspecting his wound, he sighed and Toge braced himself for the inevitable question.

“Do you know why I decided to learn how to fight?” Yuuta asked. Toge blinked, mouth slightly ajar at the unexpected query. Nevertheless, he shook his head and Yuuta continued, “Back then, we were second years and deciding what we wanna take up in the next year. You were so sure that you wanted to become an alchemist or have your own potion shop one day. I, on the other hand, had no clue what I wanted for the future. So I decided I’ll just join whichever class you pick but you stopped me.”

Of course I did,’ Toge signed with a huff. He remembered that. He was happy that Yuuta wanted to follow him but he also didn't want his friend to have any regrets. ‘I didn’t want you to pick something you’ll regret just to stay close to me. Besides, I knew how much you sucked at potions. And see? You got to find your own calling and now you’re the Grand Magic Champion. It’s all you.’

“That’s true.” Yuuta surprisingly laughed, unable to deny that. But then with an embarrassed smile, he said. “Although you’re wrong about one thing. It’s not all me. It’s thanks to Gojo-sensei and all my professors’ guidance. I also have Maki-san to thank for toughening me up and…you. Do you know why I decided to learn how to fight, Toge?”

Before Toge could even ponder about it, Yuuta turned to him with a sincere look on his face. “It’s still because of you."

(It was almost two years ago. Younger Toge and Yuuta were discussing on which classes they wanted to pick next year and the latter was undecided. Toge didn’t want to rush him into anything but he knew that the uncertainty was bothering his best friend. It was such a Yuuta thing to worry over everything and nothing at all.

But then one day, an upperclassman challenged Toge into what would become the most brutal duel he’s ever had. The details leading to that event were murky now, but he remembered that it had something to do with the older student making fun of Toge’s family and thinking he didn’t deserve to be enrolled.

As the rules indicate, any grievances that cannot be solved through words can be solved through magic. Everyone had thought the small sophomore would lose against a bigger, more experienced opponent. But to everyone’s surprise, Toge came out as the victor.

But he was not unscathed.

He had been bedridden for a while, missing some of his classes. It was alright for the most part, but he couldn’t help but worry over Yuuta that time. If there were people who had the gall to challenge Toge, he was scared that someone might pick on his meeker best friend.

But to his surprise, Yuuta had come to him safe and uncharacteristically quiet. Not that he was a noisy person in the first place, but he was quite the rambler once you got close to him. Instead, there was a storm in Yuuta’s eyes as he avoided looking at Toge for a little while. And then suddenly, out of nowhere, he blurted out, “I think I know what classes I’m picking next year.”)

“I wanted to protect you. Even though I know you can protect yourself—heck, you’re one of the strongest mages I know, Toge.” Yuuta said eyes glazed over yet still sincere as always. “But when I saw you get hurt, I just…I felt helpless. I wanted to join in, to help you fight but I knew that if I did, I’d only be a burden. It was so frustrating.”

Toge didn’t know he felt that way. Truth be told, he had thought something was off with Yuuta back then. But he just assumed that it was because Toge had been absent for a while and that some of their classmates probably made fun of him. He had offered to beat them up for him but Yuuta had been upset by the prospect of Toge getting into another fight, so he dropped it.

In fact, Yuuta’s horrified reaction to him fighting was what made him vow to stop.

“That’s when I decided to get stronger. So that if anyone wanted to hurt you, they’d have to get through me first. And I’d win—I’d win anything for you. I’d do it all for you. All my thoughts are about you, Toge. My first, second, third, and even my last.” Yuuta heaved a sigh as if he was holding himself back. As for what, Toge didn’t know. “It’s selfish of me, isn’t it?”

Selfish was not a word Toge would use to describe Yuuta. The raven can be many things—both good and bad because no one is perfect—but selfish was one thing Yuuta never was. He can be clumsy, sometimes reckless when he’s emotional but all of these good and bad traits were things Toge loved about him. And he didn’t like it when people said bad things about those he loved so he signed, ‘You’re not selfish. Never.’

“Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe I’m just good at hiding it.” Yuuta laughed. It wasn’t a hollow sound, but it wasn’t full of joy either. “But with you, I think I am—selfish, I mean. I know you’re capable of taking care of yourself—like more than capable. Yet this selfish part of me still wants to take care of you, Toge. You’ve always been so resilient and I admire that about you. But sometimes, I know it can be exhausting. So I want to be the one to support you. I want to be the one to protect you, to shield you from all harm and prejudice. I want to be a pillar you can lean on. I want to be everything for you—I want all of you. I want you. Isn’t that selfish?”

No, Toge thought. Yuuta could want the whole world and he would never be selfish in Toge’s eyes. Maybe he was just too in love to see reason. But if Yuuta thought of himself as selfish, then Toge was even more so. After all, despite all these sweet words, deep down Toge knew that these were merely an influence of the love potion. Maybe some of it was real—but the truth has been sullied by the influence of his love spell.

If anyone was selfish, it was Toge.

Because he knew that this wasn’t real, he knew that his best friend’s kindness and sincerity were being tainted by his own selfish, deplorable act. That Yuuta’s loyalty to his own friend was being twisted into a love he never had—would never have for Toge. And that was why he was selfish because despite knowing all this, Toge leaned closer and pressed a kiss on Yuuta’s lips.

And he didn’t pull away when Yuuta wrapped him in his arms and brought them closer together.
