Tears

Summary:

Roy Mustang recalled all the tears he and Riza shed throughout their lives.

Chapter Text

“Can I go inside now?”

“Yes Sir, Mrs. Mustang is resting… she had quite the rough day,” the nurse commented as Roy nodded with a bright smile. It had been quite an eventful day and Riza’s labour hadn’t been as smooth as the doctors had initially predicted.

“To hell with all the check-ups after all,” he sighed as he slowly opened the door to her hospital room and smiled to himself as he found Riza finally sleeping peacefully in her bed with the little one in equally restful slumber by her side. President Roy Mustang was almost afraid to peek into the small bassinet to look at his bundled up son. His son. Their son. Their little miracle.

“Maybe I should wait for her to wake up,” he said to himself as he walked up to Riza’s bed and caressed her hair, gently brushing her fringe which had been plastered to her forehead after all the effort of the previous couple of hours. They had been at the hospital for more than twelve actually… he had frankly lost count from the moment the two of them jolted awake in the middle of the night when Riza got her first pains. It was actually her who in turn started calming Roy down, who was clearly panicking, despite having planned every single step that they had to go through. Typical of Roy Mustang.

“You’re the President now Roy, but you’re still an utter mess when it comes to me being in pain,” she had laughed earlier that day as she took another deep breath when a new contraction arrived. “Call the hospital and tell them we’re heading there in fifteen minutes…”

“Yes, alright… sure…”

Riza always thought Roy was adorable when he panicked over these type of things - the way he got flustered when he pent up his courage to propose to her, the complete numbness when she had told him they were expecting a child… and then, he was the complete opposite when it came to his work. His confidence and charisma always shadowed everything else. Yet…

“ROY… GO CALL THE DOCTORS NOW!”

“YES M’AM!?!?”

Not wanting to wake Riza up the moment the little one stirred from his slumber, Roy decided to pick his son up and try to cradle him back to sleep. He felt so small, so defenceless while he held him in his arms as a small knot crept up his throat while he tried his best to keep himself from bursting into a fit of tears. “A major failure…” he murmured to himself as he wiped the tears that started tumbling down his cheek.

He was a father.

They were parents.

Never in a million years could he have thought that it would have happened.

Not after all the tears they had shed together.

It was almost unreal.

It felt unreal.

“You know, little man. Your mother and I went through hell before we met you…” he whispered as he leaned down to place a kiss on his small forehead. “All the tears we cried together when she told me that her father had etched the secrets of his alchemy on her back. The tears she shed when I left her on her own for the military academy. Those I shed when I discovered that she had enrolled too. All those nights crying after what we endured in Ishval, all the death… all the destruction… all the pain…” he paused as he leaned down to touch his forehead against his newborn son’s. “They never stopped… finding the Elric brothers, discovering what we were fighting against, the one time your mother thought she lost me… the moment our enemy separated us… that… that moment I had thought I lost her. We shed too many sad tears through the years… the moments we thought I lost my sight… Can you imagine? Me not being able to see your cute little face?” Roy chuckled as he took in the tiny features of his son as he cradled him gently, his voice seemingly soothing him.

“You know though? The first thing I saw when I gained my eyesight were your mother’s happy tears, before she hugged me tight and whispered that everything was going to be alright… I think… they were only tears of joy when I proposed, when we got married… the progress we made together in rebuilding this country… and then… one day…”

“Really? Are you sure?!”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Oh my God.”

“Are you happy, Roy?”

“Yes. Oh my God, yes! Yes!”

“Then the news of you came along… and we couldn’t be happier than we are now. I don’t even know how to describe it… I don’t even know how we’re here… I don’t even know if we deserve it…” he murmured before smiling as he felt two strong arms enveloping him gently. “I woke you up?”

“No… but I did listen to you two boys chatting,” Riza whispered as she placed a kiss on his shoulder. “So you two met now?I missed the introductions then.”

“Mm-hmm… and he’s perfectly beautiful… just like you.”

“I suppose all the tears were worth it at the end of the day… don’t you think?”

“Definitely… definitely.”
