Warrior Names! Meanings! Uses!

Summary:

Stuck on naming your apprentice? Ever wondered what the suffixes meant? Or just wondering why Erin Hunter chose that particular suffix?

Come on over and read a free encyclopedia of warrior cat names!

Chapter 1: First Round!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

-Fur

A very common warrior name.  Used by all clans.

Its meaning is usually to denote how the warrior’s fur may match their prefix name. Eg: Oakfur, Squirrelfur, Stonefur, etc. Secret meaning: Look out, this hardworking warrior is awesome! Eg: Brackenfur, Stonefur,

Uses: If you need a quick warrior name, go with the suffix -fur. But please, if you have another name that can work well with the cat’s personality, use it! For example, Snowfur and Bluefur could instead have been named Snowflower and Blueflare. Creative, true to the character, and still has the letter f.

-Belly

A not-so common name. Seen use by Riverclan and Shadowclan. Eg: Loudbelly and Hollowbelly.

Meaning: The bearer is needy and constantly grabbing for more. This does not mean that bearer is gluttonous. The cat could be begging for attention or ambition.  Hopefully, by becoming a warrior, the cat has grown out of this fault. If not…

Uses: Want the reader to go “This cat?”, write the name -belly. NOTE: if I cannot find a use after the obvious, I will not write it.

-Tail

A very common name. Used by all clans, though for different reasons.

Most used meaning, especially for Thunderclan: Pointing out an obvious trait about the tail. Eg. Longtail, Rosetail, Halftail, ect.

Other meanings: Windclan, the tail suffix is used for Tunneler’s, showing how the cat can be pulled out of dangerous situations. Eg, Talltail with his first experience with tunneling and quest for revenge. Riverclan, the -tail denotes how the cat has found balance within themselves. Doesn’t say anything about keeping it though… Shadowclan, though it uses -tail for the obvious reason, this clan has another use for the term. -Tail is used for someone who is a follower. For example: Stumpytail and Frogtail. Stumpytail followed his mentor around, despite the clear signs of abuse. Frogtail followed Brokenstar’s warriors, ignoring the teachings of his mentor Archeye. This case is important as the Frogpaw with markings on his tail is in Riverclan, not Shadowclan. Final example, though not Shadowclan, is Lighting Tail, named for how he followed Thunder around.

Use: Okay if you have to use it. But remember the other meanings. This will really help you when you want to write the character of named warrior. Are they just your everyday warrior, a follower, or someone who needs and can be helped? Have fun.

-Foot

Common Name. Used by all clans.

Most used meaning; to denote a trait about the foot. Eg. Deadfoot, Palefoot, Oddfoot, Blackfoot.

Other meanings:  1) the person is a traveler and an explorer.  2) The cat has found where they belonged. Eg. Mistyfoot and spoiler for my fanfic.

-Leap

Not-so common name. Used by all clans.

Meaning: Use to denote both an energy and excitedness to their work and/or personality. Always happy to help a clanmate or hunt. Other meaning: Watch out, this cat can jump.

-Breeze

Not so common name. Used by Thunderclan and Riverclan, despite the feel that the suffix belongs to Windclan. However, we have no evidence that Windclan used this suffix on the Warriors’ Wiki.

Meaning: In the case of Riverclan, Willowbreeze was named so to remember her Windclan heritage. For Thunderclan, it shows that the cat has a willingness to learn, with courage to go with it. Eg. Nettlebreeze and Swiftbreeze.

-Nose

Common name. Used by all clans.

Main Meaning: This cat is haughty as heck, as seen by how the cat’s nose is so stuck up in the air. See Beetlenose, a son of a leader.

Alternate Meaning: This cat is a really good tracker. If you are a mouse or a fugitive, you better hope that this cat is on the other side of the territory. Possible example, Jayfeather if he became a warrior.

Another example: Berrynose of Thunderclan.

One would think that he was named -nose because he was haughty. Which is very true. However, one would recall that Berrynose had gotten trapped in a trap when he was a kit, leaving his tail as nothing more than a stump. Berrypaw’s humiliation at his tail was so great, he trembled at the possibility that his warrior name would be Berry-stumptail. Firestar, thank goodness, pulled a curve ball by naming him Berrynose. Now, everyone focuses on Berrynose’s pink nose, not his very short tail. I believe Firestar was so successful, that no fan even thought of calling Berrynose his nickname when he was being a douche-bag in the Broken Code.

Chapter Text

-A …

Did you know that there are no warrior suffixes that start with the letter A?

Have fun authors!

-Bark

Used only once. For Birchbark of Shadowclan.

Meaning: Has a rough exterior, but is soft and caring on the inside.

Uses: Need an alternative to fur? Use this.

-Beam

Used only once for Sunbeam of Shadowclan.

Meaning: This cat brings with them a light of kindness, energy, or morality. The use of beam, however, indicates a strict focus of said light.

-Bee

Used only once for the book Code of the Clans, Blackbee of Riverclan.

Meaning: Don’t bother this cat and this cat won’t bother you. The bother could be in the form of verbal, physical, or emotional bothering. Or just pain old standing in that cat’s way. If you don’t get on this cat’s bad side, you will find a hardworking and faithful warrior and/or friend.

-Berry

A not-so common name. Used by all clans, though most often by Riverclan.

Meaning: This sweet cat is able to find the little, bright moments of life. This is needed when said cat is stuck by the darkness of life. Eg. Roawnberry, Bambleberry, Cloudberry.

Uses: Need a bouncy, sweet name for a queen, elder, or medicine cat? Use -berry.

-Bird

Created solely by Erin Hunter to debunk the theory that you could tell which cat was going to be a leader because their mother had a warrior name ending in -flower. All three cats who names end in -bird still end up being mothers anyway. 😛 They just have lots of kittens. See: Palebird, Snowbird, and Littlebird.

Meaning: This cat has an air of freedom to them. Despite us meeting these cats in places that are considered trapping, like Snowbird with her nine kittens or Littlebird in the Elder’s den or Palebird being a Tunneler, they refuse to let the gloom or business of their life cage them and joy. Which made all concerned when Palebird let into depression after the lost of Flutterkit.

Use: Need an alternative to -flower and -heart while still showing that is cat is a caring person?

-Blaze

Used only once for Lionblaze of Thunderclan.

Meaning: This cat is fire. Not the consuming sort of just fire or just standing strong like a flame. No, this cat dances with passion and energy, directed at protecting the ones the cat cares for and nothing will stop them. No wonder Dark Forest worked so hard to get Lionblaze on their side.

Uses: Excellent alternative for -flame or -fire.

-Blossom

Used only once for Apple Blossom of Thunderclan.

A beautiful suffix for a beautiful she-cat. Chosen for enthusiastic warrior who always shows the true beauty of her heart.

-Branch

Used most often in the early days of the clans, eg. Jumper Branch and Tiny Branch. Only time seen in modern history is with Twigbranch and Lowbranch.

Meaning: This cat is honored with how much growth they have gone through. It never was easy, but they stand before you today well and strong.

-Briar

Used only once for Sweetbriar of Thunderclan, Tigerclaw’s grandmother from his father. His mother’s mother was named Swiftbreeze.

Meaning: A deep, fierce love that is willing to sacrifice self to care for others. Alternate to -rose.

Uses: This name is burning with potential, use it!

-Bright

Used only once for Dawnbright of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat has a bright future ahead of them as seen by their skills and attitude. Not often used for warrior names tend to focus on the present or past, not future.

Uses: Works well with a lot of prefixes.

-Brook

Used twice, see Runningbrook of Windclan and Harrybrook of Skyclan.

Meaning: They have a bubbling personality, yet are able to let their emotion flow so they can take wonderful care of their clan.

-Burr

Used only once for Tangleburr of Shadowclan.

Meaning: This cat has a rough edge to them. Their fur may be soft, but their tongue is not!

Uses: Need a bully name? Or rough and tough character name? The double R sound helps bring that image to mind.

-Burrow

Used only once.

A clear reference to Hazelburrow, son of Cakestar, member of Blogclan.

Meaning:___Go ask Hazelburrow why he chose it.

-Bush

Used only once for Snowbush of Thunderclan.

Meaning: This cat is a safe refuge for someone if they need a chill pill, a listening ear, or just somecat to hide behind when it rains.

Uses: Go crazy. The cat could be stoic or silly.

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

-Cloud

A common name.

Meaning: This cat has a wisdom that comes with having a bird’s eye view and an enthusiasm that can reach to the sky.

Uses: This name can work for anycat.

-Crawl

Used only once for Turtlecrawl of Skyclan.

Meaning: This cat focuses on the lower things, such as the dirt.

This name was picked by the Erin Hunters because it works so well with Turtle-.

-Creek

Used only once for Sedgecreek of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat has a cheery and enthusiastic attitude that focuses on sharing the very best with everyone.

Uses: This name has so much potential. See Bubblecreek, Tumblecreek, Brokencreek, Crookedcreek, Whitecreek. The list goes on.

-Dapple

Used for only two cats, Leafdapple and Deerdapple.

Meaning: This cat has quite an intelligence that specializes in unique situations. Though this cat needs work on not being too snappy when cats give them fox-dung.

Uses: Not often used because -dapple is a more of a prefix name.

-Dawn

Used three times.

Meaning: This cat carries a light with them, despite going hard and dark places.

Uses: Need a beautiful name for an awesome she-cat?

-Dusk

Used only once for Appledusk of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat has their eyes on end, aware that actions have consequences that must be answered for. This cat may be outcast from the rest of the clan for being a reminder that the clan cannot do whatever they want.

Headcannon: Appledusk was actually going to Dark Forest due to not living up to his name’s meaning. See him indirectly causing the death’s of Birchface and Flowerpaw, which is before he was mates with Mapleshade. (Unless I read the Wiki wrong.) As well as him ignoring the consequences of mating with Mapleshade and then abandoning her. In fact, Appledusk tried to run away from the consequences so he wouldn’t be outcasted from his clan. Only when he stepped in to protect his new mate Reedshine, acknowledging his actions and suffering the consequences, did he go to Starclan.

-Dust

Used only once for Petaldust of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat is humble enough to recognize they are not the greatest thing since air conditioning, yet refuses to be beaten down. They share a constant encouragement with others.

Uses: Think Tinker Bell and Pixie Dust with this one.  Realizing that you are not God, but there is still magic in the world.

Notes:

Waits for someone to realize and point out the missing warrior suffix name...

Chapter 4: E-G Suffixes

Chapter Text

-Ear

A some-what common name, though not as much as -tail and -fur.

Meaning: Most Obvious meaning, a physical trait. Eg., Smallear, Black Ear, Tornear, etc.

Second meaning, This cat is a good listener. Beware all douche-bags, mouse-brains, and prey. This cat will hear about your nonsense, track you down and…Why spoil the surprise?

-Eater

Used only once for Bugeater of Warriorclan.

Used as a way to honor/mimic/be like a warrior? This suffix was probably used as a serious prank, though what else could go with the prefix Bug-? Read Greystripe’s Vow to decide for yourself.

-Eye

Somewhat common name.

Meaning: Used to denote something about the eye, usually blindiness. See One-eye/White-eye.

Other meaning: Shadowclan likes using this name to show how sharp-eyed this hunter is.

-Eyes

The exact same as -eye. Just add an -s to make it sound cooler.

-Face

Somewhat common name.

Meaning: To denote something about the face.

Other meaning: This cat has a wisdom older than their years. For some, it can be seen on the lines upon their face. Interesting fact, all cats who have this meaning for their suffix have their prefix start with -b.

-Fall

A somewhat common name, though unsual.

Meaning: This cat’s energy flows in such a way that it works well with their prefix name. see Rockfall, Rainfall.

Other meanings: A way to denote the beauty of the cat. See Blossomfall and Petalfall.

Last meaning: Sunfall was supposed to be mates with Moonflower and the father of her kits. Their suffixes all start with -f!!!!!

-Fang

A somewhat common name.

Meaning: This cat is a worthy warrior and defender of their clan. However, unlike the -claw suffix, this cat uses their words more often than not to defend or rouse their clanmates from evil.

See Adderfang, Yellowfang, Flintfang. Also possible name for Jayfeather if he became a warrior. (How you seen how snappy he is?)

-Feather

Used often enough for a need of notes on Warriors Wiki.

Meanings depend on the Clan.

Windclan: This cat often blows in and out of the territory.  This can be for good such as Crowfeather leaving Windclan to save all the clans. Or you could be like Reedfeather and mate with a cat from Riverclan…

Skyclan: This cat masterfully killed a bird for their warrior assessment.

Riverclan: This cat is playful.

Thunderclan: This cat is gifted with sight from Starclan, which includes seeing spirits and prophecies. Hence why it was the perfect name for Jayfeather.

-Fern

Used only for she-cats interesting enough.

Meant as a pretty name, as seen by Honeyfern.

Meaning: This cat cares deeply for others, going very far to give them the support they need. See Firefern and Fallowfern.

-Fire

Used five times.

Meaning: This cat has an energy to them.

Ever sense we had Firestar, having this name as a suffix can feel a bit jarring. But with a bit of creativity, you can make this name work. Eg, Bouncefire, Crowning Fire, Crackling Fire, ect.

-Fish

Used only once for Sunfish of Riverclan.

A clear reference to the actual sunfish.

-Flake

Used only once for Figetflake of Skyclan.

Meaning: This cat knows that they are small and weak, but humble enough to accept help so they can help others.

Fitting name for a medicine cat. I still don’t know why no one used the name Snowflake yet. Perhaps the Erin Hunters were too busy eating Frosty Flakes when they were naming Figetpaw…

-Flame

Used only once for Silverflame of Shadowclan, Yellowfang’s grandmother.

Meaning: This cat is a source of warmth and light for others in their lives.

-Flight

A common name.

Meaning: This cat soars to great heights in their training. All look forward to see how far they will go.

Headcanon: While Leafpool was named for Skyclan of the present, Squirrelflight was named for the Skyclan of the past. Leafstar was honored by Leafpool, Birdflight was honored by Squirrelflight.

-Flower

A somewhat common name.

Meaning: This cat has a beautiful and caring heart. At times, the beauty shines on the outside like Moonflower. Beware, this cat can still become twisted. Eg Rainflower.

-Frost

Used five times.

Meaning: This cat has a frosty exterior. This can be seen in attitude or appearance.

Riverclan tends to use this for cats who have been traumatized, interestingly enough, as seen by Hawkfrost and Applefrost who both lost their fathers.

Thunderclan uses it for cats whom can seem cold because they are trying so hard to get their work done.

-Gorse

Used only once for Sandgorse of Windclan.

This warrior is named after the spiny, yellow-flowering bush. This cat is a light of love and ensures fertility for the clan.

No wonder Sandgorse was miffed at Heatherstar for taking away the Tunnelers from Windclan. He can't make sure that the clan grows if you take away his source of providing extra food for the clan!

Chapter 5: H-M

Summary:

I am running out of meanings based on cats' personalities and I am going to symbols. Oh joy...

Chapter Text

-Hawk

Used only once for Sliverhawk.

First Meaning: Hawk are often seen as messengers, so Thistleclaw was delighted when a -hawk appeared in his dreams, offering to help him learn more knowledge with a laser focus in training. Just like the mighty warriors of old…

Second Meaning: This warrior is known for their guardianship and determination. Used for either warriors who are hyper focused on protecting their clan Or apprentices who go above their age and experience to care for the young and vulnerable.

Third Meaning: This warrior can see the big picture and ignore the small details to get the job done.

You can choose which meaning that Silverhawk received when he earned his name. I am just surprised that -hawk has been used only once since being a messenger has so much potential. Though that could explain Hawkfrost…

-Haze

Used only once for Smokehaze of Windclan

Meaning: Deception A) this cat is so confused about themselves. B) this cat is good at deceiving others.

-Ice

Used only once for Shattered Ice of the Ancients.

Ancient Meaning: This cat breaks the cold barrier that no cat wishes to even think about. Unpopular opinions? Underground tunnels?  This cat will challenge all your notions.

Modern Meaning: This cat is distant in their standing and solid in their opinions. Good luck breaking this wall.

-Jaw

Thank goodness used only once for Crookedjaw of Riverclan.

Meaning: To denote something particular about the jaw.

Challenge: Can you use this suffix in a way that says how this cat will break you instead of being broken? Crushing Jaw seems like a good name, but that can’t be the only one.

-Kit

Used for every kitten that comes through the nursery.

Meaning: This cat is under six moons old and is under the supervision of the nursery queens. Therefore, take good care of this kitten for they are the future of all the clans.

This naming practice began sometime after the Dawn of the Clans and before the first law of the Warrior Code. Unknown what caused this shift in naming, though a suspect is the naming of apprentices -paws.

-Leaf

Somewhat common name shared through-out all Five clans.

Meaning: This cat has a great deal of knowledge that comes through experience.

Second Meaning: This cat is known for their regrowth despite being beaten down, burned, and lost.

Great name to use for medicine cats and any cat you wish to be tied to nature. But please, don’t go to this name as a default or else we will have another -fur on our paws.

-Leg

Used only once, surprisingly, for Spiderleg of Thunderclan.

Meaning: To denote something particular about the leg.

Surely you smart peoples can come up with a better use for this suffix than that.

-Light

Used thrice.

Meaning: This cat has extraordinary courage and spirit, despite all the darkness in their life. Ex. Briarlight of Thunderclan

Have fun authors.

-Mask

Used only twice, both in Code of the Clans.

Meaning: This cat is good at hiding their intentions. As such, their own clanmates are weary of them. Be careful!

-Minnow

Used only once, for Swift Minnow of Windclan.

This suffix has no meaning, as it was originally the name of a rouge who joined Wind Runner’s group, a she-cat named Minnow. If anyone feels creative, here is your word challenge.

-Mist

A some-what common name. Used mainly for Riverclan she-cats.

Meaning: This cat has an aura of marvelous around them. It could be their coat, their personality, or that spray of water that they splash.

This name sounds so pretty and mysterious. Have fun!

-Moon

Used only twice.

Meaning: This cat shines light upon some dark misconceptions. You are lucky to have this cat around, especially to know you have one when they are an apprentice.

-Mouse

Used only once for Mistmouse of Windclan.

First Meaning: This cat proves that endurance and strength has nothing to do with size.

Second Meaning: This cat is very adaptable.

Fitting choice for a Windclan warrior, even if it is a name of a prey.

-Muzzle

Used only once for Dust Muzzle.

Meaning: to denote something about the face.

Possible other meanings: This cat loves cuddles!

The “zzle” is fun to say…

Chapter 6: N-P

Summary:

Yes, I am missing letters...
Mostly because there are no canon suffixes for them...

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

-Needle

Used only once for Pine Needle of Riverclan

Meaning: This cat is ever-faithful, just like the evergreen trees that stay green in the harshest of winters.

Remember: the clans have no clue about Twolegs’s tech. So sewing needles mean nothing to them. Think evergreen leaves instead. Unless you are a human who got suck as a cat…

-Pad

Used only once for Needlepad of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat can go where no one else can. Now where and why, that is up to the reader/author.

Need alternate to -foot?

-Paw

Used for all apprentices of the Warrior clans, unless they are full-grown.

Meaning: This young cat is following in the pawsteps of their ancestors, hoping to learn both knowledge and wisdom as they work to serve their clan.

-Paws

Used only once for Mud Paws.

Meaning: to denote something particular about the paws of the cat.

Would you like to drive some cats crazy by having a full-grown cat show with this suffix? Or a dog? Because that sounds funny.

-Peak

Used only once for Jagged Peak

Meaning: This cat stands out in cats’ minds just as the peak stood out in their mother’s mind.

If you wish to use this name, please keep in mind that the Warrior clans are lacking in mountain peaks. Jagged Peak was named this because he was of the Ancient Tribe in the Mountains.

-Pelt

Very common name, used by all clans.

Meanings depend on which syllable is being stressed.

If pelt: This cat has an air of calmness to them that helps all to focus on their duty. Ex. Willowpelt, Cinderpelt, and Thrushpelt

If pelt: This cat has so much energy, it is leaping off their pelt. Ex. Antpelt, Sparkpelt.

Hidden Meaning: This cat has secrets. Ex. Thrushpelt hiding Bluefur’s kits. Antpelt hiding Dark Forest, and who is the father of Willowpelt’s kits again? Because last I checked, she could have given birth to Darkstripe when she was an apprentice!

-Petal

Used only twice.

A beautiful name given to She-cats.

Meaning: This cat reaches out with her beauty

Second Meaning: This cat can draw you in with her beauty. Be careful!

Good alternate to Rainflower... Allows her to stay pretty and yet show off her bad side without tarnishing the -flower suffix. Unless that was the point of naming her Rainflower...

-Pool

Used five times

Meaning: This cat has a loyalty that stays in one place. Know well that this loyalty was sought out with courage and determination to be well placed.

-Poppy

Used only once for Tallpoppy of Shadowclan

Meaning depends on the color pelt of the warrior:

White: This warrior brings death, though the warrior makes it swift.

Ginger: This warrior remembers all those who have gone on to the stars

Brown: This warrior knows when to rest and when to be strong.

Yellow: This warrior brings peace to themselves and others.

-Pounce

Used only once for Harepounce of Thunderclan

Meaning: This cat uses every opportunity given to them.

Don’t know why this name was not used more often.

-Puddle

Used only once for Mudpuddle, as seen in Code of the Clans

Meaning: This cat will go out of their way to enjoy the little pleasures of life.

You can use this name in many directions. How is this cat happy? Is it from pleasure or true joy? Does this cat share these little things with others or keep to themselves? Have fun.

Notes:

Still waiting for somecat to find the missing -c and -h suffix!

Chapter 7: R-S

Summary:

Did you know that you can tell when an Erin loves or is invested in a clan?
Just check out how creative the names get.
Examples: Kitescratch, Turtlecrawl, Lionblaze, Gullswoop, etc.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

-Rose

Used only once for Shivering Rose of the Early Settlers.

Primary Meaning: This cat recongizes that life has both good days and bad days, ups and downs. Life would not be true unless you take both the petals and the thorns. So this cat would be true as well.

Secondary Meaning: This cat is a true lover. It may be romantic, platonic, paternal, or a lover of clan.  True Lover means someone who takes in the whole person, both their good points and flaws, and loves them.

-Ripple

Used only once for River Ripple, sorry, Riverstar.

Warning: This name was originally used as a stand-alone name, then became a two-part name. His name was chosen for the movement of the water.

Meaning: This cat may seen to be nothing more than a disruption, but this cat is the gold that is surrounded by pyrite.

-Runner

Used twice for cats of Windclan, Wind Runner and Cloud Runner.

Meaning: Blessed by the winds, this cat runs whole-heartedly on the moor.

Do you want to have fun with the religious side of Windclan with their guardian winds? Do you want to point out the speed and life-path of the Windclan cat? Here is a wonderful name for you!

-Scar

Used three times, all for Shadowclan toms.

Meaning: This cat has been banged up a great deal, as shown by the scars on their pelt. However, they refuse to let those wounds hold them down from doing the right thing.

Second Meaning: This cat knows the full picture of life, that there are painful parts that not everyone wants to talk about.

Heads up, this name is used for toms only. This is because we she-cats tend to be very concerned about appearances and how people think of us. Having a name that reminds us of our failures or unfortunate accidents is too painful. See Brightflower as an example. Leaders, instead of using names that remind the she-cat of failures, use names that remind her of her triumph. So if the leader doesn’t do this, the leader is screwed.

As for why this name is given to toms, the name is not meant to have the tom wallow in sorrow. This name can be used as pride for achievements. A more sneaky use, one that be wonderful for authors, is using the name as motivation to do the right thing.  Have you ever read of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight? (If not, read it. Tolkien has a wonderful and beautiful translation.) Sir Gawain wears the green gridle as a reminder of his failure, motivating him to do better. That he was human, not perfect. So…He has to actually work on getting and retaining knightly virtue. This can easily be transferred over to warriors with the warrior code.

-Scratch

Used only once for Kitescratch of Skyclan

Meaning: This cat wants to be a claw, but instead of aiming up to the heroic virtues and values of the Warrior Code, the cat settles for the low-hanging fruit of blows and jabs.

This cat has so much potential, but it is heart-breaking to see the cat settle for what is so low. It is like looking at a master artist who purposely lowers themselves to making art as if they were an amateur. Or a sports player purposely throwing a game.

-Seed

Used once for Parsleyseed of Skyclan.

Meaning: This cat shows promising signs for the future, with their courage and loyally hinting that the future shall be wonderful.

Want to use a name for a tiny cat? Or a cat who is just so awesome? Sorry. I just need someone to have a cat with this suffix and allow this cat to be awesome. Because Parsleyseed as a cat sucks.

-Shade

Used five times

Primary Meaning: This cat darts in and out of the shadows, hiding themselves and secrets.

Secondary Meaning: This cat provides comfort to other cats, like shade does from one hiding from the blistering sun.

This cat could be evil like Mapleshade or a sweetheart like Fernshade. It might be more fun to good with the sweetheart route just to drive readers crazy.

-Shell

Used only for Snail Shell.

Meaning: This cat is protective. For a warrior to earn this name, it shows that the cat has grown to care for others in such a way to be their rock and shield.

Excellent choice for a bratty apprentice growing up to be a self-sacrificing warrior who fights for what’s right.

-Shine

A common name

Meaning: This cat is a light in the lives of others. This light has no preference nor can the storm shut it down.

Need another alternate for -scar or -dawn? Or better, use those names as alternates. 😛

-Sight

Used only twice for Spiresight and Shadowsight

Meaning: this cat has been gifted with the sight of prophecy and/or spirits. The -feather for Shadowclan. (So instead of Goosefeather, we have Spiresight. One is slightly more sane.)

Interesting…Used only for Shadowclan cats in spiritual matters. While you might be tempted to use this for an awesome hunter or Windclan moor-runner, the Erins choose to reserve this name for the medicine cats. It might be wise for you to do likewise, since Erin Hunter is not diving into the full potential that this name suggests.

-Skip

Used only once for Toadskip of Shadowclan

Meaning: This cat skips over the timeline to show up and do business.

I am serious, this cat drives fans crazy when trying to straighten up the timeline. Toadskip does by showing up an apprentice in Tallstar’s Revenge, thus making the apprentice old enough to be a warrior in Yellowfang’s Secret.  He has three litters of kittens, all different mothers. And he keeps breaking the PG rule by using cuss words. At least it is mouse-brain, mouse-dung, etc.

-Sky

Used for five cats

Primary Meaning: This cat knows who they are and what they stand for. Or at the very least think they do.  See Clear Sky for how this name can go wrong. See Palesky for true warrior.

Secondary Meaning: This cat can see the big picture. What make this cat special is how they use that knowledge to bring hope to others. See Brightsky.

-Slip

Used only once for Meadowslip

Meaning: This cat is a bit clumsy, though whether it is in words, deeds, or movement will only be known to their clanmates.

-Snout

Used only once for Echosnout of Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat is snobby know-it all, but don’t tell it to their muzzle!

Need an alternate to -nose for a tracker? This use will work nicely since Echosnout was Medicne Cat of Riverclan. Thus she had to find herbs and point out when and where cats were being minnow-brains.

-Snow

Used only twice for warriors of Ancient Skyclan.

Ancient Meaning: Due to this cat’s cold dementor, this cat is often isolated in their own clan.

Modern Meaning: This cat is pure innocence, bringing in joy on awful days.

You can have so much fun. On one paw, here is your elder being (insert meaning). On the other paw, in the same clan, you have apprentice/warrior being this (insert opposite meaning). How will they interact and react to the other character?

-Song

A fairly common name

Primary Meaning: This cat loves and brings harmony into other cats’ lives.

Secondary Meaning: This cat can hear the voices of Starclan and follows them.

There is a reason why this name is common. You can go the personality direction for your character or a spiritual route for a medicine cat. Either way, I recommend Tolkien’s Silmarillion for ideas. This author used music as part of his magic system and the basis for the creation of his world.

-Speck

Used once for Newtspeck of Shadowclan

Meaning: This cat is fixated on the particular. Somehow this cat is still alive to fight another day.

This cat could be the one person who brings up the particular branch of knowledge that everyone forgets; example: cat could a scientist who specializes in one science OR the one person who stayed awake in History class and knows information relevant to the problem at hand.

Another use could be a cat who is so focused on one technique or problem is that they overlook the big picture. You can explore a lot of avenues with this kind of character.

-Speckle

Used once for Oatspeckle of Thunderclan.

Meaning: See how this cat glistens in the light, especially how the light dances on their pelt’s spots.

Please someone use this for a cat whose prefix is not oat-.

-Spirit

Used only once for Brightspirit of Skyclan. A.K.A. one sweet little Emmy Grace Cherry.

Meaning: This cat’s memory is forever alive in our hearts.

This name is only used for those apprentices to go to Starclan too early. (Or at least it seems to the cats still living.) This practice has since fallen out of use in modern times. Fanfic authors can bring it back.

As for Brightspirit herself, she was created for Emmy Cherry, an avid Warriors fan who died when a tornado struck her family’s house. Rather than wallow in grief or forget about this special little fan, the Erins dedicated a whole family of characters for her and her family to honor their memory. See Long Shadows and Beyond the Code: Brightspirit’s Mercy for her appearances.

-Splash

Used five times, only twice for Riverclan.

Meaning: This cat will splash on in and ask questions you may or may not want to hear.

Did you know that the other clan that uses this suffix the most is Windclan? As for your character, the questions could be innocent, malicious, or just not helpful. No matter what, this cat jump on into any and all situations.

-Spot

Used only once for Nettlespot.

Meaning: This cat has sharp eyes, able to focus in like a hawk on the details.

Somecat remind me to fix up the allegiances for my other fanfics…

-Spots

Used five times.

Meaning: To denote something about the cat’s pelt.

-Spring

A common name

Primary Meaning: This cat lives up the motto Carpe Dei (Seize the Day)

Secondary Meaning: This cat brings refreshment and hope to others in rough times, like a spring of water during a drought.

No, this name is not exclusive to Riverclan. Water impacts the other clans as well.

-Stalk

Used only once for Ryestalk of Windclan

Meaning: This cat has reached full-growth, bearing much fruit as a result of their labors.

Personally, I think there are better choices to denote this meaning, as it seems this suffix was invented just for Rye- prefix.

-Star

Used for all leaders of the Clans that have received their nine lives from Starclan.

Meaning: This cat is the guardian of their clan, blessed by Starclan with nine lives and wisdom to rule their clanmates well.

Due to this name’s sacredness, no cat has been seen with it as a prefix nor any warrior given it as a suffix. Some cats may take up this suffix, such as Nightstar (pelt), to show that they are taking up the responsibility as leader over their clan. However, only Starclan can bestow this name as the nine lives and blessing come along with it. As such, cats tend to view those who take up this suffix without Starclan’s blessing as liars.

-Stem

Used only twice, for two she-cats who have flower prefixes.

Meaning: This cat upholds others, keeping them strong and safe.

These names where used only because the Erins could not come up with better suffixes for the flower prefixes of Lily and Flower. You could do them better by coming with a better suffix OR show off the meaning of this suffix in your character. I believe in you!

-Step

A fairly common name.

Meaning: This cat willing to go great lengths to get where they need to go.

Alternate to foot. Better as it gets the reader to think of movement instead of the cat’s body.

-Stone

Used only twice.

Meaning: This cat is a steadfast cat to rely on.

Don’t ask me why this name is not used more often.

-Storm

A fairly common name

Primary Meaning: This cat has conflicting loyalties or troubles within them.

Secondary Meaning: This cat is a most excellent hunter, able to track a prey even in a storm.

Let’s give Whitestorm, Sandstorm, and Billystorm some love shall we?

-Stream

Used four times.

Meaning: This cat is a gateway for new opportunities, life, and gifts to flow.

For Riverclan, this is the closest suffix you can get to -river. See if you can tie in some of their religion into this name.

-Strike

Used only once for Sunstrike of Windclan.

Meaning: Watch out! This cat hits well and hits hard! (We are so proud of them says the leader.)

This name sounds so cool.

-Stripe

A fairly common name.

Primary Meaning: This cat is extremely loyal.

Secondary meaning: To denote something about the pelt.

Need an example of -stripe? See both Darkstripe and Greystripe, toms who were utterly devoted to their best friends. There is a lot more to this name than just a stripe over their pelt.

-Swoop

Used only once for Gullswoop of Shadowclan.

Meaning: This cat comes out of no-where and steals the cake (or opportunity).

Also, I swear there was a Hawk Swoop somewhere… Anyone want to use this name for a time-traveling Hawkfrost?

Notes:

Here are about 30 suffixes that start with s????

Chapter 8: T-W

Notes:

On the Warriors Wiki, the suffixes only go up to -w.
Hence why there is no more after this chapter.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

-Talon

Used twice for Smoketalon and Thrushtalon.

Meaning: This cat is quick to catch their prey, whether it be food or foe. Good luck getting this cat off your case. Because when this cat does get you…It will be bloody.

If you can’t name your cat Whiteeagle, Swooping Eagle, but still want to call back awesome birds of prey? Try using -talon.

-Teeth

Used only once for Bigteeth of Warrior clan…

Meaning: Hey! Look at this cat’s teeth!

I am sorry, I have little respect for Warrior clan solely based off of their names. Please create better names from these suffixes and create even more awesome characters. Please.

-Thistle

Used only once for Redthistle of Shadowclan, Sagewhisker’s mentor.

Meaning: This cat is an unwanted meddler.

Welp, you know why they named Redthistle this way! She kept bringing her clanmates in for check-ups! And maybe prevented a few forbidden relationships….

-Thorn

Used twice for Mudthorn of Riverclan and Snookthorn of Skyclan.

Meaning: This cat exists and drives you crazy. However, the craziest thing about said cat is that you still don’t know how he got there.

Somecat help. Mudthorn is on the Allegiances for Leopardstar’s Honor, but he does NOT appear in the book. He is just…there.

-Throat

Used only once for Whitethroat of Shadowclan.

Primary Meaning: Denoting something about the cat’s pelt.

Secondary meaning: This cat yells out warnings for others, both moral and physical warnings.

Need a rouser so your characters can rise up to defeat a tyrant? How about you help this rouser out so people will listen to him, unlike poor Whitethroat.

-Toe

Used only once for Daisytoe, mother of Goosefeather and Moonflower

Meaning: This cat is constantly toeing the line.

Which line the cat is toeing and why is up to you authors. Is the line the warrior code or simply manners? Is the cat malicious or just too excited? In Daisytoe’s case, she seems excited or over passionate, not evil.

-Tooth

A rather common name

Primary Meaning: to denote something about the cat’s tooth, particularity if the tooth is sticking out of the cat’s mouth.

Secondary Meaning: This cat is vicious with their words. This can be used for correction or for tearing down cats. Hang out with said cat to discover why.

This name is mainly used for a character whose tooth is protruding from their muzzle. However, you can use this name for anycat who short-tempered and fights with words. An alternate to -fang if you want to have a snappy cat who is not necessary defending their clan with their words. Note also how all the cats with this name can get cross easily.

-Tuft

Used only thrice.

Meaning: This cat is but a little remainder of those who come before us.

This name can be requested by either parents or the apprentice in question. Leaders would never give out this name otherwise, since they are unaware if the newly named warrior wants to bear a cat’s memory all through-out their life. Example would be Hollytuft, who looks just like her aunt Hollyleaf. An Aunt whom only left a tuft of fur behind in her clan when she disappeared.

-Watcher

Used only once for Skywatcher, the first elder and member of the newly rebuilt Skyclan.

Meaning: This cat is vigilant and holds the watch despite the long, long night.

Skywatcher needs more love. Hopefully you can create a loveable character with this name.

-Water

Used only thrice

Meaning: This cat’s life will be filled with turmoil like the waves of water.

This name is given in forms of prophecy. I say this due to the fact that the two warrior cats who had this name died due to flooding. As for Quick Water…

-Whisker

Very common name.

Primary Meaning: Denoting something about that cat’s whisker(s)

Secondary Meaning: This cat is able to sense hidden secrets.

This cat could be a great hunter, a detective, or about to point out the flaws and sins in bad guys’ plans. Poor Beetlewhisker, may he rest in peace.

-Whisper

Used only once for Nightwhisper of Shadowclan

Meaning: This cat is stealthy, yet it will do you well to listen to his quiet words.

It’s the quiet ones who change the universe. It’s the loud ones who take all the credit.” -Londo Mollari from Babylon 5. This character right here is a quiet one. Never overlook the quiet ones, either to your fortunate or to your doom.

-Whistle

Used only once for Clawwhistle of Warrior clan.

This name was chosen for the sound that a claw makes when it swipes through the air. If you want this suffix for an actual warrior…

Meaning: This cat is clever, able to draw away foes so their clanmates can escape.

-Willow

Used only twice.

Meaning: This cat has grand aspirations.

You get to decide whether these aspirations of the warrior can lead to good or ill. Case in point Plumwillow and Redwillow.

-Wind

Used only twice.

Meaning: This cat has speed!

This cat may have trouble settling down, see Runningwind. Or they are so caught up in working that they almost speed through life, see Sorchwind. Or your cat can just be speedy.

-Wing

A common name, to put it lightly.

Meaning: This cat has freedom to see and hear so much about the world around them.

You can focus on which part of the meaning you want to emphasize what kind of character your cat is. Is the cat freer, resembling a bird? Is your cat able to see and hear a lot? You might find them often in a tree then! Or is the cat wise in the ways of the world, able to offer others some advice or wisdom? Have fun!

-Wish

Used only twice, both she-cats where named Frecklewish.

Meaning: There is great hope and dreams placed upon this cat. Dreams that are not without foundation and trust in the apprentice’s abilities.

You could write a character who is struggling underneath all the pressure. OR. You can write a cat is very chill and focused on the mission at paw. Either way, the warrior was born for this. (Insert epic song.)

Notes:

That is all my fellow felines!
I hope you all enjoyed this and find it helpful when you are writing your characters! I certainly had fun, plus now a lot of extra head-canons floating around in my head.

Unfortunately, this will be my final chapter for this encyclopedia of Warrior suffixes. I have run out of names to write. Though there is something hiding in my work folder. Something that is missing from the suffix list...

Nota Bene: I will write more chapters if there is a list of non-canon names provided down below. Or if the Erins provide a substantial list of new suffixes for me to write on. (Key word being substantial for both. What's the point of giving you all hope for a new chapter when there are only three names?) Either way, may Starclan light your path and many blessings follow.
