   How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print? I use my laptop with a hooked up monitor, since my eyesight is poor, and holding tablets gets tiring.
   Do you tend to save them, bookmark them, rec them, delete them? If I read and like a fic, I tend to download the PDF version lest I find out the author decided to delete some point down the line.

   The only other outlet I use for finding more information/meta in fandom is Tumblr, but I still browse kink memes for prompts/fills on sites like LJ and DW, despite them being a lot less prominent than they used to be.

   I usually click search > works and choose fandom, relationships and specific tags (I love tags, they are so useful).

   On my tablet, sometimes on my phone when I don't have my tablet (because I'm travelling or something). Sometimes, but rarely, on my laptop, but only when I'm at home. The screen is too big to make me feel comfortable when browsing fanfiction :/

   Do you tend to save them, bookmark them, rec them, delete them?
   Mostly I bookmark them on my tablet, sometimes I mark them for later on Ao3 if I don't have my tablet. If I really like the story, I bookmark it on Ao3.

   I also use Tumblr (just search for specific tag like #sterek besides following other blogs) and fanfiction.net, but only for another fandom (One Piece).

   What do fanworks mean to me? Fiction in all forms has always been a means of escapism to me. With fanworks, especially fanfiction, I can also deal with my feelings or learn something about myself. It sounds cheesy but it may really work that way if you find characters you can relate to, which is naturally easier for me in fanfiction, usually created by (wlw) girls & women. It can also fix the original works - way too often do they have a cool premise but are poorly exacuted, or interesting characters get sidelined or changed in a weird way... It make you think I wish it was different and bam! You read a fic and it is different. Fanwriters are like magicians. Fanfics can also brighten my mood or give me katharsis by making me cry either with laughter or just simply from sadness. I don't write myself (yet?) but sometimes I develop aus and headcanons with my (writer) friends and it's always so fun to unleash that creativity!

   Where do you go to find works or more information about your fandoms? Other works, info and recs on tumblr, most fanfiction on ao3. If you use the Archive of Our Own, what steps do you take to search it and find specific items? I usually go to the fandom or pairing tag and then tweak filters to my liking. What are your favorite fandoms or tags to browse, if you're not looking for something in particular? Just random fandoms of works I read/watched but never searched for fanfiction of or bookmarks by my favourite writers. Oooor my to-read list which is always full for some reason. How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print? Usually on desktop unless I'm travelling etc then on my phone When do you usually look for fanworks? When I'm sad or just simply feel the urge to read about my favs or when I'm on a train and have no books with me. Do you tend to save them, bookmark them, rec them, delete them? I leave comments & bookmark the works I like, I also save my bookmarks offline as pdfs every month or so, just in case. I often rec works I like to my friends, if they're posted on tumblr I reblog them too as a recommendation for my followers.

   - My main and only platform to find works is AO3. If we're talking about more information about fandoms, I would either go to Instagram or any other social media account they might have.

   If you use the Archive of Our Own, what steps do you take to search it and find specific items?
   - I already have my favorite tags saved to my homepage for easy access, so it isn't that hard to search for particular things.

   How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print?
   - Main platforms include my phone and laptop.

   When do you usually look for fanworks?
   - Every night, I guess. And in answering the next question, I bookmark the ones I want to read the next day (for long fics, basically), I rec the fics which I already think are good, and I save most of the fics I want to read by subscribing to them.

   Well, I got rid of all my social media accs (for the better !! lol) so AO3 is the main place I go too but also YouTube specifically for mi main Fandom *ahem* kpop lol and for other fandoms that i dabble in to find more stories like the originals, tvd or soaps, then I've gone on an older site I used to go on WAYYY before AO3 existed which is fanfiction.net. but only sometimes, not alot...I'm dedicated to AO3; it's an amazing platform ! :)

   I just use the search bar and find specific themes/kinks or characters/ships that I'm into or want to find out more stories about, them I use it. Nothing fancy lol

   Supernatural shows like I mentioned the originals,tvd, true blood etc... and soaps like general hospital, y&r b&b etc... & sometimes marvel and DC comic style tv shows if I'm in the mood. (Just to name a few, among others of course)

   Bookmark + rec are lifesavers! Especially when there are a couple gems of stories that really catch your attention and you can't help but bookmark or rec which I do more frequently! And also have subbed to a couple ongoing stories ;)
   If your trying to find a fanwork again, where do you go to for help?
   I've gone on Fanfiction.net cause its one of the oldest fanfic sites around that are still running and sometimes if authors still have there older stories on there old profile still or if I remember a little of a title to a story I remember reading forever ago, then I can sometimes find it *keyword:sometimes* lol

   No, not really (I wish tho lol) I usually rec stories that Ive read and take me away in a metaphorical sense that I really love but that's all

    Just the right to express myself through other characters created by some geniuses because even if I've never been to Hell like the Winchesters, I can relate to them. I've never been an angel like Castiel and yet I found myself in him. Through Fanworks, I can bring up what we have in common and without making it about me.

    I love fanfic because it gives us the chance to continue universes that were cut short ... show "scenes we'd like to see" from shows/movies that didn't get that far emotionally ... explore the impact on characters of certain events: anger, hurt, love, joy that characters don't always get to show in the original source ... write silly stories about our favorite characters ... write dead-serious angsty stuff ....

    In short to go where no TV/movie writer generally goes.

    I do most heartily wish that AO3 had a way for us to "illustrate" our stories. As an artist and writer, it makes me a little sad that I can't have a chapter heading with an appropriate angsty/happy/loving character illo. We could always "keep it clean" ;^)

       You can actually embed headers and illustrations into fics! I've seen plenty illustrated fanfics and even a few fancomics posted on ao3 (even explicit ones, so who needs to keep anything clean. ;D)

          Perhaps they mean they want to be able to upload a file to AO3? I know uploading to third-party sites has caused a lot of grief for me (images being swapped, or images being removed, period.) So maybe that's what they mean *shrug*

          ETA: I also wish we could attach files. Because I would love be able to share a PDF file when it comes to meta w/ images, due to the above complaint.

             True true! The best image links I've seen tend to come from deviantart, which is a very stable site as far as image posting go. Tumblrs are only good as long the person never changes the blog names and 3rdparty sites are a freaking nightmare. Hence my wall-of-text style fanfics lol!

             Pdfs would be a great feature...

    Bandom, Doctor Who, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Hamilton (particularly modern AUs), Harry Potter, Hunger Games Trilogy, Lifeline, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Moana, Sherlock, Supernatural, and Welcome to Night Vale.

    How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print?
    On my laptop, tablet PC, and my Kindle.

    Do you tend to save them, bookmark them, rec them, delete them?
    I subscribe to WIPs I like, and bookmark them when they're done. If I really like a fic, I'll download it as an epub or mobi when it's finished so I can read it offline.

    As for what fanworks mean to me? Friendship. I've been a writer of fanfic for 20 years, and a good deal of my friends are either fellow writers or started out as my readers. I met one of my friends after I reached out to her during the 2002 purge of RPF from ff.net, and one of the others added me on MSN after she had read one of my fics. The two of them are now my best mates. I wouldn't be the writer I am today without either of them.

    Fanworks is an interesting word choice and is distinct from fandom. I found fanfiction and fandom through muds and moos for dragonriders of pern. I read through a saved log of an online hatching and the descriptions of impressing dragons just sparked something in me and I wanted to read more. Of course trying to find Anne McCaffrey fanfiction in the mid 90's was next to impossible given the authors stance at the time, however it did lead me to quantum leap and then to my first fandom the Sentinel and forever on. The world of fanfiction and fandom has just grown in leaps and bounds over the years we have a language now and meeting places and inclusive archives like this one. I can't wait to see where we go from here.

    Where do you go to find works or more information about your fandoms?
    I mostly go to FFN, Ao3 as the second, Wattpad as the third choice. As for info gathering, far too many to name.

    It's honestly a pain in the ass to search on here. Even Wattpad, who doesn't organize anything, has a better search function. Start with a keyword, then go into advance to try and filter out things which doesn't work because you don't have a filter out feature, not a good one at least. I exclude F/F, this is just an example, I still get it in my searches. I exclude child abuse, rape, etc., still get it too. People are also terribly with picking the Ratings, Genre, etc. It's hell to find anything.

    Even regular browsing, no decent exclude feature. Get a good one.

     

    What are your favorite fandoms or tags to browse, if you're not looking for something in particular?
    No ships, non-ships, gen. I'm not a shipper, it's very difficult to find but that is what I look for occasionally. Fandoms. Kingdom Hearts, Harry Potter, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, The Glass Scientists, Kuroshitsuji, Castlevania, Assassins Creed Syndacite, Robert Downey JR. Sherlock Holmes, Avengers/Marvel works..

    How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print? Depends what I'm on at the time.

    Do you tend to save them, bookmark them, rec them, delete them? Depends on how much I loved like it. Normally I forget about them, come back months later when I feel like a reread if I had liked something. If I really enjoy, I do save but that's rare. But often times it's a lost memory on me.

    If you're trying to find a fanwork again, where do you go for help? Google search.

    Have other fans shared with you the way they look for works, and what did you think were good tips? No, I discovered the tips at random while looking for a add-on or app to deal with this site. Their tips did not help, but those that recommended certain add ons...Such a shame they aren't available for all systems.

       Do you have any add-ons you’d recommend? I never thought of that as a possibility. I find the lack of a proper exclude feature at least as annoying as you do. Why have so many written romance about Captain America, Ironman AND the Winter Soldier?? No Multi doesn’t work, and that doesn’t apply to all the “[main character] has sex with everybody in the multiverse” fics anyway.

          Try Ao3rdr. It's available for both Chrome and Firefox. Unfortunately for IE users, it's not available. Hide works, blacklist by tags, and block authors. On top of other unique features. Then there is Ao3Savior, the clone of TumblrSavior. I prefer the first, it's more user friendly, and you don't need to go adding on more extensions, in my opinion.     I haunt both ff.net and ao3 for fan works. I started out many, many, many, many years ago on ff.net. I still publish primarily there, but I try to mirror here, and I read a lot here. One reason I read here is that the ratings are clearer and frankly more useful to me. I do read explicit works, and I don't want to have to guess if mature means mature or explicit or teen+ and the author is shy. I search by keywords, usually characters sometimes fandoms. When I find something I like, I try to use that to help me refine my search. One thing I do REALLY miss is the ability to exclude things. I am not a huge fan of the multi-multi fan works ... not judging, they're just not for me ... but it can be hard to filter them out without a way to say "Frozen and only Frozen." The two fandoms I read at present are WoW (specifically Sylvanas fic) and Frozen. I tend to prefer F/F, but I can settle. I also read X-men and through that found myself reading about Abby, who I think is CSI? If so it makes me laugh because I loath that show, but fic is often better than the show. Throw in a little Faberry and Valyssera (the latter also from WoW) and that's essentially what I've read.

    The most important to be is an interesting premise or plot. I prefer good writing, but again ... I can settle as long as it's readable. I am often blown off my feet by the writing abilities of fans. I have read prose that made me fly. Fans are such an invested and talented group.

    If I want to search for a specific fic, I use Google. They do search better than anyone, so why try to improve on that. I've never asked anyone else how they look for fic, maybe I should? I do often ask for recommendations though.

    To answer your first question, what fan works, transformative works, mean to me? -- Well so much. I'm queer and of that age where there weren't queer people in my popular culture. There still isn't enough of them, at least not the live ones, but that's another digression. So fanfic was the place where I saw relationships I could identify with. It was where I realized that Emma Frost only belonged with Jean Grey and no one else. I was where Talia and Ivanova could actually finish their relationship, or heck even just start it. When I was a kid, I knew that Trixie Belden loved Honey Wheeler as more than just a best friend, but I didn't have words and there was no fanfic to help me find them. Fanfic has been life changing for me. It still is. I cried for a week straight after seeing Frozen (conceal don't feel struck quite a chord), and then I sat down and wrote an OC for Elsa, so she could have someone worthy to love. It's my creative outlet, but it's also what keeps me mostly sane ... and it is what has introduced me to awesome creative friends who have made my life so much richer.

    What are your favorite fandoms or tags to browse, if you're not looking for something in particular? I don't read much fanfic, actually. I'm a writer, so I spend more time creating my own works rather than reading others. But I have searched out SHERLOCK, OUTLANDER, DEATH NOTE, PANIC AT THE DISCO, and TWENTY ONE PILOTS fics at various times.

    How do you look at fanworks -- on your phone, eReaders, computers, in print? ~ Bad vision, so I have to read and post on my Macbook. I simply cannot see the small screens of iPhones or tablets.

    I would like to see an easier way to promote stories on here, and I also like the idea someone mentioned above of adding the ability to insert images (more easily than the cumbersome method we have to use now.) Embedding from third party sites is not reliable. Photobucket decided to monetize, and that resulted in tons of images with broken links. I'm now hosting with postimageDOTcom, but who know how long they will stay free?

    -Well, for fanfictions, I go either to fanfiction.net or AO3. Honestly, it's because both sites are pretty easy to navigate and you can find what you're looking for most of the time. The only times you can't find anything is if the site doesn't contain it, which is no fault of the sites'. That and there are very few bugs or errors that appear on both these sites, or at least, very few that have affected me.

    -As for where I get information? The Internet is generally the go-to option since I don't have a specific site that I go to every single time because I personally like to look at multiple different sources in order to cross-reference everything. That way, I usually have accurate information.

    *If you use the Archive of Our Own, what steps do you take to search it and find specific items?

    -Me? I usually have a specific fandom in mind when I am looking for fanfics. I look at the most popular and the newest ones of that particular fandom first because it's easier to find good ones that way instead of looking through the entire gallery of all the fanfics in that fandom. If I find an author I like, then I'll look to see if they have any other works on fandoms that I've read/watched/know about/am interested in and if they do, I read those too.

    -My favorite fandoms to browse are the ones most familiar to me, the ones I've read once or twice and if it's an anime, one that I know what the plot is about.

    -Computers, mostly because I carry one around with me all day.

    -Whenever I'm bored and in need of entertainment. Or basically all day every day, in other words, 24/7 regardless of what I'm doing. Yes, I do have a fanfiction problem, and I'm proud of it.

    -I tend to bookmark, just so if I want to reread or continue reading the fanfic I know where to go to.

    -Usually, I know exactly which fandom it is from along with a basic gist of what the title or summary is. So I just search it up in the search bar. Or if I know the author, I search the author. If I still can't find it, I check my history, it's surprisingly helpful.

    - Two words. The Internet. It is a wonderful resource and a wonderful place. Without it, I'd probably be bored to death.

    For me, fanworks are freedom. A way to interact and learn about characters in a more intimate way. The freedom to change an unhappy ending or project parts of yourself into characters and stories that you love. I think the idea that certain characters and plot HAVE to be a certain way is rigid and boxing but our society is generally straight, white and cis and we see it on our screens and in our books everyday. I love AO3 for giving us a way to change that. Thank you.

    Fanworks are my life.

    I dove into the world of fanfictions and fanarts around 6-7 years ago. I was just a child back then, wanting to further explore the universe of shows that I watch and see how my ships could develop.

    I considered fanfictions as (almost) canon works. I love reading so much, and because of fanfictions, I can read everyday. I have to admit I actually open Archive of Our Own almost every single day now. I just can't get enough!

    I started writing not long after I first discovered about fanfictions. Truth be told, my works were the worst back then. My works were so childish and contained a lot of errors that I was tempted to delete them. But I didn't, because some people actually liked it. I wanted to write because I love fanfictions, my ships and my shows so much, that I just had to write and express. If people liked and appreciate it, then I would too.

    I'm glad my writing quite improved a little even though I'm not a native of English.

    Now, I'm still scrolling around fanfiction.net, AO3 and Tumblr to see a lot of amazing fanworks. It's been a number of years and yet here I still am.

    I want to thank every single one of you creators, of fanfictions or fanarts, or even theory makers and dedicated fans, I want to thank you for creating, for giving a chance to other fans to widen their views and imagination of their shows and ships, to be able to imagine things that you can only think of, to make un-canon scenarios happen and to share your love of your ships and shows. But most of all, thank you for creating smiles on people's faces :)

    Blame my new-found habit of fanwork reading to Bucky Barnes and Steve Rogers. I've been reading fanworks for almost three years already, the same year as i found my love to these two wonderful characters.

    When it comes to fandom, i'm a huge Marvel fandom reader, both the real Marvel au and others, like college au, no powers, and others. These aus shows not only our favourite characters in action at a different environment but they showcase the mind behind the story, because it reflects the feelings that cannot be expressed, or the reality the writer or artist we don't know and especially it enlightens and supports on the struggles we face like depression or PTSD and others. And such questions and judgements regarding fanworks that it's just erotic contents...well, there's smut and bdsm (yeah! *wink wink*) but not really erotic stuff, it's way more than that. And may we all, fanwork readers, artists and writers find solution to these misconceptions.

    Fanworks means a universe for me. Before, i thought fanfics are silly, but now, har, i love every single piece i've encountered, they all reveal something different. It's also a hub of potential writers that can make it to the market, be an author, and go onto the spotlight of the world, but most of all, this place felt like a sanctuary for idealists, which is all of us. We find home here, with our fellow readers, artists and writers.

    Honestly, I'd say Harry Potter because there is such an abundance of amazing content but if we're talking about tags in particular I'd say Draco Malfoy x Harry Potter because they're my OTP and again there are so many riveting fanworks to explore.
