I know I'd never cut it in LA; I'd be on a flight home within an hour of arriving, traumatized by big city life and unable to fight for the dream my mom so desperately wants one of us to have. Dorothea can do what she wants, and if she makes a name for herself, I'll be right there, quietly paying for a ticket to her film debut and giving a polite smile whenever it's inevitably brought up in conversation. But I don't like the thought that where I'm at is the easy route, the road someone unwilling to venture beyond their home takes. I don't want to be seen as the sister that settled for less.

The light in the basement of the only coffee shop in town is dim and the acoustics are terrible and seeing Karlie’s face in the middle of a song she hasn’t even finished writing at an open mic night is like being struck by lightning and dying for five seconds before waking up with her fingers fumbling on the strings of her guitar. She recovers because she’s a professional even if she isn’t but she can’t stop finding Karlie’s face again, a slight smile that brings the lightning back but only in her spine, cheekbones that have always made Taylor want to drown herself in the creek for a variety of reasons.
She hasn’t seen her in four years.

Dorothea knows why the warm, happy look that August gives her makes her heart speed up—she’s known it for a while and kept it neatly tucked inside her where nobody has to deal with it—but that doesn’t make it any less distracting.
