Wangxianficrecs post here. (Archived.)Oh. Oh, hold on. Shit. I'm emotionally exhausted. (Also, it's quite late, but I couldn't stop reading: this is a very fast read.) It's as strange and gut-wrenching as you're thinking, and sooo interesting. POV moves around, but the bulk of the story is wangxian (it doesn't take long for wwx to get called back from the dead). The new reality is stark and grim, and the people who have survived in it (most notably lwj) are changed in fundamental ways from who they were in canon. So the story is about wwx and the core crew (including a delightfully ambiguous nhs) trying to defeat Wen Rouhan (again) while lzc and meng yao debate ethics and try to guess at truths from lzc's captivity in nightless city and jc chokes on the mistakes he's made and tries to breathe.

It was so strange, to travel with Lan Wangji, this new Lan Wangji who not only did not remember him, but had had such different experiences than the Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian knew. He had seen his people slaughtered, had endured seven months of trying to lead and keep things in order while knowing a sword lay at his brother’s throat. He was not quieter than the Lan Wangji Wei Wuxian had known (frankly Wei Wuxian did not see how that would be possible) but there was a flame burning within him that hadn’t been there in the other reality. A thirst for justice and vengeance that seemed to consume all his thoughts.
Wei Wuxian knew what that flame felt like. That flame had kept him warm during three months in the Burial Mounds, while he struggled to survive and tame the resentful energy.
