Harry Potter, devenu immortel en tant que Maître de la Mort, cherchait à fuir son passé. Sous l'identité d'Archer Evans, avec des données soigneusement falsifiées, il s'installe au Japon pour une vie paisible. Mais à l'université, il rencontre deux esprits brillants qui perturbent son plan.
Light Yagami, préparé à dominer les examens, se retrouve à partager la première place avec deux autres étudiants : Hideki Ryuga, qui semble excentrique, et Archer Evans, calme et mystérieux. La situation se complique quand Ryuga se révèle être L, l’enquêteur chargé de démasquer Kira. La tension monte d'un cran quand Ryûk disparait en éclatant d’un rire nerveux.
L, sous couverture en tant que Ryuga, avait prévu d’observer Light de près, mais Archer Evans attire également son attention. Malgré ses recherches, L ne découvre rien de suspect chez Archer, ignorant que ses données sont falsifiées et que cet étudiant cache un secret bien plus grand. Désormais, L doit affronter à la fois Kira et cet étrange génie.
