Summary
It's got nothing to do with God or getting into heaven though, as Jennifer watches Ponyboy wipe at Dallas' face. It's the plain fact that even though she never is all that happy to accommodate, she feels the need to, always feels herself caring about the people who land in her lap no matter how thin or fat her wallet was, no matter how exhausted she felt.
It's become second nature for Jennifer now.
Jennifer Curtis brings home another stray, courtesy of her son Ponyboy Curtis. Alternatively: Dallas Winston enters Ponyboy's life and never intends to leave.

Summary
"Well — I guess it's about girls and stuff," Soda admits, and Ponyboy shifts in bed more, wondering what Soda is going to say, what he's trying to say. Soda is never one to really beat around the bush; he also wasn't as blunt as Darry could be. "I mean —"
"You know I ain't into girls, right?" Ponyboy teases and Soda grins at him. "I don't think they're all that dissimilar though."
Soda nods, biting at his lip. "I just – I was wondering what it's like? To – to be in love, I guess."
Soda asks his older brother, Ponyboy, about love. Ponyboy tries to answer.

Summary
There's a kid curled up in the blankets that are meant for Mickey Mouse — it's easy to distinguish the mop of brown hair from the bright red blanket that Ponyboy came in here to steal and for a moment he's not sure what to do, exactly about the sleeping boy in the stable that shouldn't be there.
December, 1961 — Ten year old Ponyboy Curtis finds a boy sleeping in the stables.

Summary
There's more than one family that Ponyboy belongs to, more brothers than what he knows what to deal with and as much as he wants to get to know them, it isn't hard to see that he is desperately unwelcome among them.
A glimpse into 1965, Tulsa Oklahoma and Dallas' complicated relationship with Ponyboy Curtis, the son of a snake preacher.

Summary
The moment his father walks out of the grocery store shaking his head, his hands in the pockets of his coat, Ponyboy knows that the cranberry sauce they're looking for wasn't found. He knows they should've expected this — that they wouldn't have found it at any of the big stores out here, that had Christmas food. It was a miracle that everything was still open for Christmas Eve anyway.
"What are we gonna do?" Ponyboy asks, moving over in the car as Dad opens the door and slides into the driver's seat. "Mama's gonna be real upset that we went all this way to get it and didn't find it."
Dad taps at wheel, half humming along with the radio as he thinks. "Well... I think we still have some options, my boy."
"Like what?" Ponyboy asks, wondering what kind of crazy plan his Dad was cooking up now. The moment an easy solution was off the table was the moment Dad did his best thinking. "We've been to every store they've got. What're we gonna do, go over on to Texas and look?"
Freshly home from his time at finishing school, Ponyboy and his Dad make a last minute run on Christmas Eve, 1956. Ponyboy meets the greaser Dallas Winston for the first time.

Summary
"When this is over," Ponyboy says, his tongue heavy in his mouth, "Or if things don't go right, I love you, Dally. No matter what."
Dallas, beneath the stars, with his dark hair a mess above his eyes, shakes his head. "Pony, I'm not gonna let you go to the fucking - to the jail house, if you lose. I'm not." There's an odd determined glow to his eyes as Ponyboy runs his fingers through his hair. "Jail — I know jail would turn Johnny into something else. If you went in — "
"If I went in, I wouldn't blame nobody. Not as long as you're there for me," the words are drowsy, heavy and he doesn't want to talk about it anymore. "I love you, Dally. That's what matters."
September, 1965 — Johnny and Dallas live. That doesn't make things any easier for Ponyboy, not with his omega dynamic singling him out, his best friend dealing with life long injuries now, his family life still a tightrope he has to navigate, a court case on the horizon that will decide his fate, and his growing, mutual attraction to Dallas Winston getting stronger by the day.
What he doesn't know is that more people are in his corner than he thinks. And that maybe, things will be okay.

Summary
Living in Tulsa is very different from living in Ophidia — both because it's so much bigger than that tiny town, tucked into the Mississippi Delta behind small mountains that could keep total strangers out easily while Tulsa is a flat, open landscape teeming with rules Dallas doesn't totally understand and because learning how to fit in with those rules is much, much harder than it was in Ophidia.
Dallas adjusts to his new living arrangements in Tulsa in the summer of 1961.

Summary
He has no idea that for the rest of his life, he'll always remember how Ponyboy looks when he shows Dallas how to handle the snake, his soft hand on top of Dallas' own in the church. Or that he'll never be afraid of a snake again, with the way his hand runs on it's scales, in awe of such a calm, deadly creature.
Or that when he finally leaves Ophidia months later, he'll regret going alone. That he'll be gripped by terror he's never felt before, fleeing into the dark, away from the voices calling his name out.
Fleeing from exile in New York City, Dallas is found and taken to Ophidia, Mississippi where the residents aren't exactly what they seem. The years catch up to him in Tulsa when the Curtises die and he's reunited with a son only he knows about: Ponyboy.

"Where'd you go, tracking in all that mud?"
The only good thing about that sentence is that it's not Darry who's saying it — it's Soda instead, coming to sit on the bed next to Ponyboy, slow and easy like he was gonna spook like a horse.
A cut scene from earth angel (will you be mine?) between Ponyboy and Soda.

Summary
Darry Curtis thinks that there's nothing worse than the news he has to deliver now, looking at his two brothers seated on the couch. Even more that sitting next to each other, looking at him, it's obvious that Ponyboy isn't a Curtis.
Menelaus and Darry both deliver news to their respective families. It doesn't go over well, exactly.

Summary
Darry takes the papers, trying to steady his breathing, trying to think around his feelings of betrayal, of anger, of confusion. "How long will it take to notify?"
"It will be done by the end of the day. Possibly, the hour," Mrs. Crenshaw says, her voice thinner than ever.
Darry confirms who his brother's father actually is. A phone rings in Philly.

"I finished the ones for University of Texas yesterday, I just need you to go over my essay. Texas A&M, I was halfway done before I fell asleep. I still have NYU, Oklahoma State, and St. Gregory's." He counts each one, trying not to think about how much all of this was even costing Darry for him to apply to. It couldn't have been anything less than a hundred- dollars, and even with Darry's latest raise at work, that was still a lot of money.
"Long as you get 'em out by November, I think you should be okay kid," with a flick of his fingers, Dallas turns down the radio, bobbing his head along with the music.
Everyone wants Ponyboy to get into college. He's trying his damndest to get there, but he's got some things to reckon with.

"It'll be fifty dollars every month by the fifteenth," the landlord smiles at her in a way that feels almost patronizing, and she's willing to ignore it as she takes the key from him. "If you need anything, come by the front desk, Ms. Skelly."
The first day Atreus sees her, she's wearing a daisy patterned dress, her blonde hair cut short to her chin, and a stern expression on her face as she enters the deli.
The first time Ponyboy sees his father isn't the day he's born.
