“Where’s the carriage?” Valjean asked, raising his voice to be heard through the rain, and when he didn't get an answer, he followed with, “Come inside.”
The world crushes around Javert, and everything he's believed to be true, shatters.
Jean Valjean thinks that now that Cosette has fallen in love, there is no room for him in her heart.
So when Javert, lost and desperate, kisses Valjean, it opens a different path for them both.

This is like vaguely bookverse with musical quotes.
So basically, this started out as a "what if Marius actually saved Eponine from the barricade during Eponine's Errand" fic........and then spiraled into way longer than I thought it would be.
Also tw Gavroche dies and Eponine is very affected - oh and Eponine has abusive parents too. There's no scenes with them (yet?) but they're mentioned a lot.
Yeah, I've really fucked things up for Eponine.
Also I have been in a Les Mis cast and several of the characters in this fic are based off people from my cast.
On a happier note, Cosette and Eponine are very cute, and Cosette has a dog.
There's also a bunch of swearing in it. (Not as much as my wicked fanfic which I self-destructed because they almost fucked and I don't want to hand that to my irl friends though)

What if Javert had jumped into the water after Jean Valjean at the hospital? Only to remember right before he hit the surface the in his refusal to let Valjean escape again, he completely neglected the fact that he can’t swim. He begins to slip under the water, refusing to make a sound or cry for help, when he feels a strong arm grab him. He loses conciousness as he’s being dragged through the water. Later in the hospital, Jean Valjean long gone from Montreuil-sur-Mer, Javert is told that Monsieur Le Maire had saved his life that night. Javert can do nothing by lay there and accept it as his world is turned on its axis (a whole 9 years early). The real question? What will he do when he gets out of the hospital?

His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”

Javert knew as soon as he had spoken those words to Jean Valjean that he sounded odd. If he sounded odd even to his own ears, to a man who had known him as long as Valjean, he must have sounded like he was speaking in a little-used foreign tongue.
To an extent, he was. Lying well required a comfort with deception that Javert had never possessed, and he had not miraculously acquired it even in this late hour, no matter how convenient it would have been for him to have done so.

Valjean meant to toss the rose he carried into the rushing waters below but he could not—his fingers would not part with it, no matter how many times he moved to let it go. There was a metaphor in that, he thought, but he was not yet ready to examine it closely.
The sensation of Javert’s presence wrapped around Valjean like the wind as he walked—it did not cradle nor comfort but chilled him through and through, like the cold metal of a shackle clasped around his ankle, trailing a heavy chain. He had long imagined the man’s gaze on him even when it was not, but perhaps now it would follow him forever, no longer bound by the restrictions of flesh and blood.

Instead of dying when the Inspector in him is killed, Javert fakes his death and runs away to England to find himself and the truth.
Unfortunately, his erstwhile quarry does not take his forfeit of the chase as the favour it was supposed to be— taking the newspaper at face value, Jean Valjean believes himself to have indirectly ended a life. The weight of this guilt nearly has tragic consequences. However, with the help of Cosette’s ingenuity, the misunderstanding is rectified before it is too late.
