Aleks wrestled with his thoughts for a moment, knowing that each passing second was probably making James feel worse and worse about his lack of reply but what James didn’t know is that he had this hold on Aleks, such a strong fucking grip that shouldn’t exist, shouldn’t be there in the first place and never should’ve happened.
James was just some random guy he’d found on the street, one with a gun and a stupid beanie and nothing else to offer but his name. A guy with a voice that sounded like velvet, especially when he said Aleks’ name and a guy with beautiful tattoos and long eyelashes and eyes that make Aleks want to drown himself in the best and worst possible ways.
What the fuck was he going to do?
Aleks managed to steady his voice, inhaling a quick breath before responding in the most calm voice he could muster up.

It was supposed to be harmless. Just one time, to experience it. It made sense; after all, he was the most fearless crime lord in the entire state of California. He was the strong one, the one that everyone looked up to and the one that Aleks had never seen crumble for anyone or anything in his life.
James had rolled up his sleeve and found a vein near the crook of his elbow, the rest of the room drunkenly oblivious to everything as Aleks just swayed slightly in place, watching as his boyfriend looked up at him with an innocent, dazed smile.
“You gotta try everything once, right?” Aleks merely blinked at him, struggling to see past the multiple Jameses he was now seeing in his vision before he turned his head back down, taking careful aim before inserting the needle into his skin.
Oh, God. If only he would’ve known.

Aleks was there. He wasn’t quite dead but he wasn’t alive either, not fully, at least. It felt like the missing pieces of a puzzle were finally beginning to fall into place, his tired brain struggling to look at the bigger, finished picture.
“How do I get there?” The words escaped his mouth before he had a chance to stop them, and he wanted to cry at how desperate he sounded, how hopeful he was.
He saw everyone exchange glances with each other; some weary, others mostly surprised. James waited with his breath held, glancing around in a not so subtle attempt to catch someone’s eye before Lindsey cleared her throat, closing her book in her lap.
“I don’t know, but let’s find out.”

The light shone off of the shotgun sitting tightly in his hands, pointing directly at Aleks’ head.
