The pings were all from Overse’s interface and routed from a transit ring called Trans-All, the kind of ping that was just are you in range – are you in range – are you in range. It was a call for help and it fucking terrified me, because I was answering it way, way too late.

Ratthi goes missing. Pin-Lee isn't used to losing. Murderbot isn't used to having anything to lose.

All fluff all the time. We are chilling. We are consuming media. We are reading our government assigned space-FBI-agent's classified correspondences like the morning newspaper. We are going on a journey of self-discovery. We are wearing various clothes. We are having an emotion. We are chaperoning some kids on a gross planet.

It was only now that I’ve started to look back at some of my logs from… let’s call it when the Shit Hit The Fan. It’s pretty painful to look back on the logs of that clusterfuck, because 1. I'd been a gigantic asshole and 2. I'd had a very public physical and emotional meltdown.

I said, trying to sound lighthearted and not really succeeding, “I’d like medical clearance to go join the ground team?”

While helping ART pack for a new colony rescue mission, Murderbot finds a discrepancy in its crew manifest. The truth is weirder and more emotionally loaded than it ever expected.
    - - -
People have commented on how MB as a SecUnit might relate to ART as analogous to a HubSystem and what that means for their relationship, but how does ART, as a bot pilot designed to pilot drones and shuttles and split itself into multiple pieces, relate to having a SecUnit on board?

    Summary

A collection of (very) short stories based on prompts from the New Tideland Discord. As a result they all have different genres and characters! There are pairing and trigger warnings on each story since these are self contained.

    This week's story:

"You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to." pause "Is it the logos? You've mentioned them before. I did think at the time, that you wouldn't have known they were impossible to remove if you hadn't already tried."

After a rough meeting with Bharadwaj, Murderbot tries to remove its logos one more time.

    Summary

Kukri kept sending me media about “Robbing the Hood” and telling me to watch it, that I’d understand what was going on better if I did, but I had no interest in watching people rob Hoods, whatever those were. I didn’t like robbing in real life (I did it because I had to not because I wanted to) and I doubted I’d like it in media.

Shortly after hacking its governor module, a rogue SecUnit is involved in an ill-fated space battle and finds itself alone save for the company of a mourning raider ship bot pilot. It would like to spend the rest of its life watching media in what remains of the ship's crew quarters, but it turns out that "the rest of its life" wouldn't be long at all without the money to pay for proper maintenance. There seems to be only one way to get that money.

She was never an error. Just unreadable. That's what they said. Error. Corrupted. Misaligned neural net, incomplete behavioral heuristics, failure to comply with baseline interaction protocols, blah blah blah. I've seen actual errors. I've been one, according to their standards.

She wasn't an error. She was something the system didn't know how to read. That's different.

Humans do this thing where if a person doesn't behave the way they expect, it must be broken. Dangerous, even. Because obviously they're the standard.

    Summary

We were watching Sanctuary Moon when it happened.

We’d gotten to the part where Captain Hossein and the Navigation Unit were stranded planetside—the whole scene bathed in violet hues to bring out the romantic overtones. (Much more appealing than actual planets.)

“I love this bit,” Ratthi said.

Truthfully, I like it, too. And I could have said as much. Or I could have said nothing at all. Both were valid options. But instead, I decided to be the contrary asshole and went with option C.

    “It’s implausible,” I said.

Ratthi looked confused and I realized I needed to elaborate.

“There’s no way a unit built to navigate starships would take a romantic interest in somebody.”

And that’s when I felt it—the sudden absence. If I’m honest, I hadn’t realized how closely ART had managed to sidle up against me in the feed until it was gone.

An offhand comment leads to a misunderstanding between SecUnit and ART, and—possibly—a discussion about what they really are to eachother.

    Summary

Being responsible for the security of two separate groups of humans is hard enough when SecUnit knows and likes the ships they are travelling on. But once its humans arrive at the incredibly normal space station in orbit of Trellin, SecUnit finds their potential new allies to be much more difficult to deal with than most hostiles. To do its job, it must navigate local privacy customs, dead and/or naked humans, experimental biomes full of planetary fauna and, worst of all, the helpful local HubSystem, which happens to be a) very friendly, b) totally useless at security, c) really fucking creepy. Can SecUnit keep its humans safe and not be driven absolutely beeshit by argumentative social scientists, HubSystem or human, along the way? It’s about to find out.
