I mixed a little angst in with the fluff. No particular season, just sometime after season 7 when Cas has his powers and they are all on speaking terms. No spoilers for the show.

After months of mourning the loss of his angel, after not even getting to say a proper 'goodybe' or getting to say 'I love you' in return, Dean wakes one morning to find Amara at his bed, taking in his grief stricken appearance and warning him that his thank you for saving the world is on it's way, and that it's something he'll actually like. Sleeping as he's instructed to, he wakes up to find a happier state of events then when he last opened his eyes,w oken by a baby crying.

Summary
After the wishing pearl that was supposed to grant Dean's deepest desire backfires and brings John Winchester back into his life when he's been doing his damndest to grow out of John's harmful lessons, like putting his bisexuality into a little box and shoving it where the sun don't shine. That poses of even more of a problem when he feels like he does about Cas, who he would give his left arm to be with. He sends Charlie to a Ren fair where she meets someone amazing and Sam on a wild goose chase of a hunt with Eileen, just so he can face a drunk John by himself, to protect his siblings from the hateful words he knows will spill off of his tongue. What he doesn't expect, is to gain a boyfriend in the literal man of his dreams, and to have said boyfriend defend him when John calls him things he hasn't been called in awhile.

It’s a long time before Cas and Dean see each other, really see each other again. See each other when they’re not fighting for their lives or running for something. It feels long, at least. Time moves differently in Heaven and the cracks between universes.
Whether it actually takes an eternity or not to find space to breathe together, it sure feels like one.

You gotta have a mission in life. Sometimes, that was one of the only things that kept Dean sane in his line of work. Well, mostly sane. As sane as to be expected, at least.
Saving people, hunting things, the family business, that was the big one. The main mission. But you gotta have smaller ones too, the day to day necessary stuff. That one current hunt. Finding the right information while researching. Making sure Sam and Cas were okay. Those little missions were what got him out of bed each day.
Then there were the best kind of missions. The ones for the soul. None of that religious crap, at least where Dean was concerned, but the ones that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Dean would never dare breathe a word of this to his little brother, but those were always his favorite. And his current mission was to teach Cas about all things human.

It's December, and everybody knows that Christmas means eggnog. And since Dean is absolutely loving introducing Cas to all the great foods he can think of, of course eggnog was next on the list. But then the ex-angel ends up with and eggnog mustache...

Castiel Novak was Dean’s first love.
Even now, years later, when the name holds only a flickering flame to his shadow of memories. He is still the thing he holds on to, the comfort, constant and soft and warm when Dean feels as if he’s drowning.
Of course, he hasn’t seen him for eight years. Hasn’t been back to Lawrence since his family was uprooted and moved to Manhattan, Kansas. Just an hours drive away, and yet Dean never could find the courage to make the journey.
It's only when he moves back, and he's confronted with all the problems he left behind, that he comes to realize the memory of Cas does nothing to erase the pain that still lingers in Lawrence. Dean may have changed, but it's obvious Lawrence is still the same City filled with bigotry, intolerance and homophobia.
