"The whirring Clark had heard coming from the hood earlier was now almost a distressed whine and he watched, entranced, as the pronged ears tipped back, lying flat against the curve like- like he was holding an animal in his hand, not a person. Not a human.
Teeth and harrowing black eyes and what Clark realised with a sinking feeling in his gut were claws embedded into the fingertips of sturdy gloves, the curves of metal filed into cruel points, raking uselessly against his own arm but managing to tear neatly into the fabric of his sleeve. As the Batman thrummed with rage and sneered, entirely ineffective but damn well not going to go down without a fight if he had to, Clark saw all the ways the man had put himself together, fine tuned himself into a weapon of fear and vengeance, and couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.
What turns a man into something like this?"
