Summary
Kiyoi runs away from her home on the Jasmine Isles by stowing-away on a Fire Navy ship hoping to make it to the Fire Nation mainland. But as destiny would have it, Kiyoi stows away on the one ship in the Fire Navy that is forbidden from those waters. Stuck on a ship that can’t take her to the one place she wants to go, Kiyoi pleads with the kind old man that catches her stealing from the kitchen to take her in as a servant. And Iroh has no problem with that; the more the merrier. His scowling nephew, though, that’s another story.

Figuring out their new place in this new world, they continue to search for their true identities while weighing their own ideas of what they consider their responsibilities, duties and real destinies. Grappling with new roles and emotions as bonds and promises are made and broken, loyalties keep people painstakingly stuck in place while some new self discoveries drive people to knowingly risk ties being severed.

FUN FACT: Did you know that when Katara is healing Zuko's chest after the Agni Kai, he was supposed to stumble when she helped him up, and she was supposed to catch him? Mhmm the more you know. It’s the little things that keep you up at night.

In this case, a shipment of seeds for Mai's aunt that was being held up by changing import/export regulations as the United Republic of Nations came into being. Mai's effort to resolve the issue causes her to cross-paths with a certain Water Tribe warrior that had fascinated her even when she was with Zuko. Even as she has to fend off people who still question her choices during the Kemiurkage Crisis
For Sokka's part, his efforts to help a woman he considers a friend unleashes feelings they had both felt were buried. Which would be bad enough, without the mysterious events in a town near the border pointing to a mystery beyond their own skies. Can they work out just how they feel about each other and solve the mystery of what crashed in the mountain's near Chen's Crossing at the same time?

Zuko was almost killed the moment he was born. Ozai said he lacked the spark necessary of a fire-bender and almost cast him over the palace walls, only saved by Ursa’s powerful, motherly conviction. Pleading to give Zuko a chance. Agni, please, just one chance.
He wasted that chance at thirteen years old, during an Agni Kai, forever branded to be the banished son of Ozai. He was honourless, irredeemable, and yet still, somehow, he found his way. Zuko knows how it feels to be worthless, he knows how he it feels to desperately claw at that accusation and prove otherwise. This is why, with the Fire Nation's carcass resting on his shoulders, he knows he cannot buckle underneath the pressure. It is his responsibility, his duty to both his people and the world, to fulfil this role, for fear of his father's tyranny seeping back into the palace walls. He has a chance to do good here...and he cannot waste it.

AU where Ursa decides Ozai can't be trusted to uphold his end of the deal and after she kills off Azulon, she takes her children and makes a run for it. They were supposed to escape to the Earth Kingdom, but well, Ursa doesn't really know anything about navigating the open seas, so they end up half drowned in the Southern Water Tribe a few days after the last Fire Nation raid that claimed Kya's life. The tribe saves them, finds out who they are, decides they can stay, and some scant days later this unfolds.
6.30.24: On hiatus. I believe it ends at a good stopping point though if you're still curious enough to read.
