Louis opened his mouth to respond but faltered, gaze catching on the shoreline.
Harry was toweling his chest dry curls dripping, The sunlight caught the swallows on his chest, and the butterfly tattoo. The laurel leaves dipped dangerously low beneath the waistband of his swim shorts. His skin glistened, hair curling at the ends, mouth parted slightly as he laughed at something Liam said.
Louis blinked, heat rising behind his eyes and ears. His chest felt tight.
“Louis?”
“Huh?”
“I said what’s your”
Then pain exploded through his foot. “AHH! what the fuck?!”
Louis stumbled back, nearly knocking into Niall’s float.
“What happened?!”
“I think, fuck, I stood on something, ow, fuck!”
They both looked down. The water was clear, and sure enough, right by Louis’s foot, was the spiky culprit.
“Mate, that’s a sea urchin!”
“Great! Love that for me,” Louis gritted out, gripping Niall’s shoulder. “It burns! Why does it burn?!”
Niall half laughed, half paddled toward the shore. “C’mon, let’s get you out before you die dramatically in front of arch nemesis”
“Shut up.”

He’s caught pleasantly off-guard when Dermot laughs loudly and throws his head back and then gathers up Louis in his arms for a big squeeze, ruffling his hair madly before he lets go.
“Wouldn’t have thought I’d ever be one of the lads with Tommo,” Dermot says, and his grin is infectious, and Louis catches it, feels his own eyes crinkling up as he returns the smile while smoothing his mussed fringe. “Good to have you back, mate. Well done, you.”
Louis goes home.
