Diluc Ragnvindr is going to die.
He's well aware of the fact that, at some point, everyone's time arrives no matter how early or horribly unfair it is. Though in his case, he's shocked that the situation he finds himself in now hadn't happened sooner. He'd gotten lucky countless times, managing to survive without a single Mora to his name, a single connection while roaming Teyvat, or a family to call his own to save him. And now. . .
Well. It seems that now, everything that he had done, everything he had said since he had turned eighteen was finally catching up to him, all at once.
Diluc was used to ambushes. He'd lost count on how many people had tried fulfilling the bounty on his head within Snezhnaya; he was a highly sought after fugitive for how many Fatui soldiers had died by his hand. The Tsaritsa herself wanted the man and, truthfully, he laughs at the sentiment.
This ambush, though. . . he had no chance. Not on his own, and not with a weapon so volatile that it had been corroding his hand and arm down to the very muscle and bone for the last three years. Not when it was the Harbingers themselves after him.

‘Do you think it’s true what he said about Khaenri’ah?’ one of the kids they sometimes played with asked. ‘For the gods to get that angry…what if they do the same to Mondstadt?’
‘That won’t happen.’ one of the older boys proclaimed confidently. ‘I bet everyone from Khaenri’ah was evil, and that’s why they got cursed.'
Kaeya couldn’t help but clench his fists at the baseless claim, thinking of all the people he’d been close to in his childhood. His mother, who sang for him and told him stories whenever he couldn’t sleep, and the other children at court, both fearful of what was to come yet proud of their heritage all the same. What made them so evil, so wicked, that they deserved the awful fate the gods had cast upon them?
'I bet they deserved it.'
Kaeya should have known Diluc wouldn’t be able to let this go, but he’d been too busy stressing over everything to notice in time.
‘If I punch you in the face right now, would you say you deserved that too?’

“You’re not going.” Diluc declares and Kaeya all but sputters and chokes on the mushroom he was chewing. Diluc at the very least, has the remorse to pour him a cup of water for the surprise.
“And pray tell, what is your reasoning on why I shouldn't?” Kaeya challenges with a squint. On the contrary, he doesn't actually mind all that much, but he can't help but feel slighted at the sudden banning (another part, just wanting to be contrarian to annoy the redhead).

Set in the middle of the archon quest: Bedtime Story, Kaeya is told to stay behind in the serenitea pot with the others because the leyline disruption and Abyss influence seems to have made him feel less than ideal. Diluc is worried and with Lumine's help, they've banded together to use whatever underhanded method to make sure the Cavalry Captain takes care while they're away.
