Somebody had been lurking in the hallway.
And not just anybody—an alpha.
Edward hadn’t noticed right away. Food and water were still delivered and left with a knock, maybe a quick ‘Here you go, captain’ and no attempt to engage or linger. When Edward hurriedly retrieved them after letting the footfalls fade away, there was never a sign of anybody.
But in between…
Ironically, he hadn’t been alerted by the smell because his scent barrier was holding. But that didn’t stop the air from getting through—and having effects.
When he finally got suspicious and everything clicked into place, he got furious—mostly at himself.

Stuck without any other options, Edward tries to ride out the worst heat of his life alone, barricaded in his cabin behind a barrier held together with vinegar rags and misdirection.
If he can keep his tactical mind and if his scent containment holds, maybe he can still walk out as Blackbeard by the end of it.

On a date at the lepidopterarium, Stede can't stay focused on the lovely butterflies.

Ed is bored. With his life, with how he has to live, all of it. One man keeps him doing what he’s still doing and is liable to keep doing until he dies, and it’s definitely not Izzy, who’s getting more volatile by the day. It’s one Stede Bonnet, the aristocrat he met at a masquerade ball he crashed and told he’d be at sea if he ever changed his mind on running away with him. When Izzy tells him he’s got work to do, he drags his feet. Until he finds out who’s on the tiny ship Izzy wouldn't let him leave alone. He’s really going to have to play his cards right as nothing goes as planned for their utterly unromantic reunion.
For clarity, this fic takes place around 3-4 months after Unmasked! ends. the prior work is complete but this work references that one heavily and leans on its premise.

Before bed, Stede has a Routine: shower, dry his hair, face wash, a layer of moisturiser, the anti-aging cream that Ed always tells him he hopes doesn't work because he likes Stede aging, actually, and then he goes to the loo before putting on his pyjamas.
It's only after he flushes that he realises his mistake.
Ed is displeased.

“You know I’m going to have to punish you for that in the morning, pet,” he says, with barely contained glee.
