Summary
The first time Charles submits to Edwin is sort of an accident.
The case had gone fine. They'd ducked around the corner of a building to watch the blue light flood the street, and congratulated each other on a job well jobbed, and that was that. But something had rattled Edwin on the way back to the office, leaving him as tense as Charles has ever seen him: gripping the edge of the desk until his knuckles go white and staring into the distance instead of picking out a book, or speculating about their next case
Charles isn’t sure what makes him suggested it, but the words are out of his mouth before he can draw them back.
“D’you want me to kneel for you for a bit?”

In life, Charles had developed a system of tricks and cheats to get all the touch he needed without arousing suspicion. It had worked very well, and he’d been proud of himself for working it out. Then he’d gone and died, and the only person he could feel anymore wasn’t big on touch. 35 years on, he finally figures out Edwin’s trick, and decides to do some testing to make sure he’s got it right.
Or, five times Charles gets hurt so Edwin will touch him, plus one time he just asks like a normal person.
Or-or, five times Charles puts himself in Situations and Edwin gently takes him back out, plus one time Edwin very gently (and consensually) puts him in a Situation they both very much enjoy.

“Do you recall the rules, darling?”
Charles gives a hazy nod. He’s a bit gone already, if he’s honest—sinking more and more into that fuzzy headspace with every word Edwin says to him—but he remembers.
Edwin leans down, so close his nose brushes Charles’s cheek. So close Charles feels that delicate lace he’s wearing rub up against his chest. He tries to lift his wrists, just a bit. Just to feel Edwin press them back down into the bed.
“Tell me,” Edwin says.

"Oh my god, you two, get a room, please," Crystal moaned at them, throwing her bag down tiredly. "Might as well call him a good boy and rip each other's clothes off, while you're at it."

Since they’d returned to the office, Charles had been quiet and twitchy. Niko had tried to talk to him, but his mind had been else where, constantly zoning out and missing what she was saying. She’d left soon enough with Crystal, the two living girls needing food and sleep and things they couldn’t provide at the office.
He’d ultimately directed his energy into unpacking and reorganising his bag of tricks, kneeling in the middle of the office with his trinkets littered around him.
It was a familiar sight, Edwin sitting at his desk, no work was being done, no quips exchanged. He was staring down at Charles, watching him fidget. It was completely silent, just the ticking of the clock echoing through the empty office and the sounds of Charles quietly shifting things around his bag.
Edwin could tell something was up with him, although he couldn't quite pinpoint what exactly. So he watched him unpack and repack his things over and over...and over...and over again.

Somewhere between the start of the night and now, the rest of the world’s slipped out the back door, leaving this as the only solid anchor in Charles’s fuzzed-out mind. He feels strung out on it; tethered by it.

Or, well—he is thinking, but only about how he needs Charles’s tongue to stop moving so he can better examine his molars for fungal remains. What ends up happening, though, is that Charles makes the loveliest, breathiest little noise, and Edwin becomes suddenly, intimately aware of how—well, intimate this all is.

After the conclusion of a case involving a particularly insidious variety of ghost fungus, the possibility of Charles having been infected sends Edwin into an investigative frenzy—and leads to a series of rather exhilarating (if inappropriately-timed) revelations for the two detectives.
