Summary
“Hurry John, we’re losing him!”
Sherlock is a dark blur, a clatter of posh shoes, and then he’s gone up the ladder, disappeared over the edge of a building.
“Sherlock!” Furious, out of breath, and yet, John is halfway up the ladder before it occurrs to him that he should have let the Yard handle the chase alone, that he would get in the way –
But he’s outstripping them, isn’t he?

Summary
John rolled his eyes, and kicked the battered and leafy smear of green and white aside before continuing inside. Sherlock and his bloody vendetta, John thought.
Sherlock and his bloody Sherlockness.
He didn’t think this in a fond manner, no not at all (is what he thought). Not fond, not him, nope.

Summary
It’s in the way Sherlock prowls the flat after they both return – John from just a few miles of London pavement away, and Sherlock from God knows how many thousands of miles and lies away. And two years.
They both come back from two years away.

“Look, Sher, I’m flattered, really, but I’ve been late for rotation three days this month already. Where. Are. My. Trousers.”
“Joan, please refrain from shortening my name – especially to that. You know how I feel about contractions of proper nou ¬–” Sherlock looked up from the series of cross sections she was cutting from the rat liver she had procured. She opened her mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. Stared.

Summary
“I take it Sherlock’s the man in the relationship,” Anderson mutters where he stands next to Joan, exiled from the crime scene for talking, watching Sherlock boss the remainder of Lestrade’s team around.
Joan blinks. “Excuse me?” She had been feeling sorry for Anderson, right up until he opened his mouth. Seems Sherlock was right about this, too.

"Lamnidae do not require sleep. Did you know? Of course you didn't."
Joan looked up from her medical journal and cup of earl grey. She blinked, thought out the sentence, and then the initial word. "You mean sharks?"

Summary
“What happened in Afghanistan?” Sherlock asks, and John smiles, because this is something the detective cannot deduce, because it isn’t a fact and it didn’t leave a mark, and it didn’t change how his body moved.
All it did was leave fingerprints on his thoughts.
All it did was prepare him for this day, so that this day would not be the first time he saw the light. So that this day, he could stop his friend from rushing to his doom.

Summary
The first time he solves a case sober, it’s for a lawyer looking for proof that evidence in a property dispute was tampered with. He doesn’t expect much for his troubles, partly because it was no trouble, no really, if people would just notice…
And partly because, he’s not looking for money. His funds are under Mycroft’s hated watch, and that irks him, but what irks him more is how necessary it is, because he knows what he’ll do with cash.

Summary
John finds Sherlock sitting on the driftwood fence that delineates the line between the hotel’s grounds and the beginning of the beach of round lake stones. Sherlock’s holding a smooth flat stone, so different from the rounder, bulkier ones, and paler, too.
“Going to take a shot?”
“Hm?” Sherlock turns his shoulders and head, but his eyes are transfixed on the choppy waters of the lake, excited by the wind.
“Ever skipped stones?” John clarifies.

Anger, John knew, was the second stage. He’d barely felt the isolation, barely been afforded the luxury of denial that comprised the first stage. There had been no denying what he saw that day.
But anger had been quick to surge in and fill the void, and John was clinging to it, making up for being denied the dream of Sherlock-isn’t-dead.

Summary
The stigma against human augmentation has never lifted – not after the initial kinks in the operating software and hardware integrations resulted in some curious physical and personality…defects. Despite the lives it’s subsequently saved, the tests the procedures have passed, and the unending barrage of PR stunts and ad campaigns.
None of that matters – God, the papers still refer to the riots – which had been in protest against the expense of post-op care and maintenance – as the ‘Rise of the Machines.’
John had just been a kid at Uni when it all happened, hadn’t really been arsed to care, and then he’d swanned off to join the army. Somewhere in that time the landscape had changed, and the first recipients of botched augmentations had stopped being victims and become something altogether more sinister.
And all the while, science had marched on, blissfully ignorant – or at least willfully so – continuing to innovate and improve.
And then John had gone and got himself shot, and science had taken him in like an overbearing mother, like a charity case, and hadn’t taken ‘no’ for an answer, hadn’t wanted ‘no’ for an answer –
And John hadn’t wanted to die.

Summary
John wants to explain the rush of sensation and data, which is just another form of sensation (or is it the other way around?). John wants to say:
Augmentation circuits report temperature, pressure, various forms of quantitative input. Sudden changes are reported as pain, since sudden changes are dangerous, and pain is the quickest way to encourage reflexive extraction.
But all John can manage is, “Nng.”
Because this sudden touch is not reporting as pain.
