The Miqo’te’s shoulders slumped on a sigh. She sat there with her head hung for a while. Slowly, her hand moved up to carefully touch her aching face, and she hissed at the sharp sting elicited in her cheek. Her child’s ears twitched at the sound, but he didn’t look up. She glanced at him out of the corner of her eye and watched his hand as he moved the bead around with his small, thin fingers. For a moment, she said nothing.
It was quiet. It was always quiet in the room, ever since the day her child had stopped crying for anything at all.
