Andy scoffs, and winces as Booker moves lower, closer to her wound. “And do what?”
“You really don’t remember, do you?”
When Andy finds out the truth behind Booker’s betrayal, it makes her take stock of the past she’s left behind and the legacy ahead of her. She has a choice to make—one that becomes even more difficult when she comes face to face with Quynh again, and finds Booker tortured by her hand. A choice between living life between cycles of violence or carving out some semblance of normalcy.
Andy has left her mark on countless lives across the millennia, but the thought of leaving a bit of herself behind scares the shit out of her.

The moment the words leave Booker’s lips, Andy hears the meaning underneath. Am I going to be enough for you? The question they had been asking each other in hidden words and secret gestures for decades now. The same question she had asked in London.
The wine bottle scrapes across the floor as she moves it aside, crawling across the space between them to capture Booker’s mouth in a chaste kiss. She can feel the breath catch in his chest, stuttering between them shakily as Andy curls her fingers in the hair at the nape of Booker’s neck. “I want to find out,” she whispers as both of their eyes flutter shut.
After Booker is sentenced to exile, Andy finds herself being pulled back to the pub in London. What she doesn’t expect is where her heart ends up leading her.

Bokker gets Letters in exile, birthdays, wedding, vegetables, Booker is still pondering this when he unlocks the door to his flat and slips on the doormat. He can’t quite catch himself in time and cracks his head hard on the small marble table that lives on the entryway. The vegetables fall and roll out of the bag with only a slight bruising. He can’t say the same for his head, which briefly throbs when he gasps back to life. On the one hand, it’s good to know he’s still got it. On the other, this incident will be added to the list of deaths No One Can Know About.

Andy’s concerned expression lingers on Booker for a second longer and he nods to her reassuringly. Perhaps, Quynh still terrifies him on her best days but sometimes after a ruthless battle, with a blood soaked axe in her hands, Andy does too. Just like, Nicky and Joe are constantly fearful about getting close to him again. They’re all ancient beings capable of wonderful and terrible things and at the end of the day, nobody poses a threat to them quite like each other. The least they can do is learn to live with each other because an immortal life is an awful long time to spend alone. “You’re married?” the curiosity in Quynh’s voice cuts through Andy’s mind and she opens her eyes to tune back into the conversation happening around her.
“Several times over,” Joe replies, a hint of pride in his voice but Quynh looks confused.
“That wasn’t allowed anymore,” she says, her head tilting to the side as she tries to make sense of it. “It was.” She looks to Andy who can’t help but smile as they share a memory of a handfasting ceremony several millennia ago. “But then it wasn’t and now it is?”
“In some places,” Nicky says, “a lot of Europe, Americas, Aotearoa - that’s mostly known as New Zealand now. It’s legal for same sex relationships to marry, have children even. I think marriage is legal in twenty eight countries now?” He looks to Joe for clarification who nods.
“Twenty eight,” Quynh repeats, “have countries and borders changed much since… while I’ve been gone?”
“There have been many wars,” Nicky says, “there are less empires and kingdoms now, just countries and continents. Officially there are one hundred and ninety five self-governing countries.”
Andy watches as Quynh processes the new information. When she had been taken from them, England and Scotland had barely been brought together and the four of them had just fought and lost in the Siege of Kinsale with Gaelic Ireland right before that. It had been the time of the Dutch and British East India Trading Companies and the Holy Roman Empire. The early years of the 17th Century were a tipping point for the world in a fight for land and power and not a time when you wanted to stand out in any part of the world for fear of persecution.
“Is it better?” she asks, a hopeful note to her voice. “Is the world better?”
“Yes,” Nicky says at the same time Andy replies “No.”
Quynh looks between them, a familiarly fond smile on her lips as Joe laughs. “Still the pessimist of the family?” she asks her and Andy shrugs.

"You know," she realised incredulously. "You know how he feels because you've done unforgivable things yourself."
Nicky looked up, gave a whimpering sigh and nodded dejectedly.
"As I said, we all live with the abysses within us. I have been struggling for more than nine hundred years with the demons I conjured up during the crusade. The deaths Joe gave me were just, fitting and more than deserved but they do not erase the guilt I brought upon myself. It's with me to this day and Booker won't be able to get rid of it either."
