Adam stared at Lawrence, confusion widespread across his face at the question.
"The voice on your tape. It said, 'Many days you have wanted to die.' What does it mean?"
"Means whoever did this has obviously been watching me on many days."
Lawrence's expression softened further, and Adam found genuine concern in his eyes.- although he was unsure why. Lawrence had no reason to care for him, he was a no-good stalker at best; not that the doctor knew that, but still. Adam felt unworthy of the older man's concern, and if he had to fight him to get rid of it he would.
"Why did you want to die?"
There was hardly any hesitation in his answer- as if he'd explained this a thousand times over. Lawrence's concern deepened at the rehearsed response. "The same reason everyone else wants to die. Because it's preferable to living."

“They’re not fucking sex dreams, Adam!” he explodes, and Adam’s grateful that his door is shut, because that would be a hell of a thing for his ten-year-old daughter to hear out of context. Or in context, frankly. “Jesus Christ– I dream about your corpse, about you reaching out for me, about you covered in blood, begging me not to leave you– I dream about missing the shot to your shoulder and killing you instantly, and how it would’ve been a mercy, but that I’m glad I didn’t, because I’m glad I got to hold you before you died.”
He’s breathing heavily by the time he finishes, and Adam is matching it, feeling his lungs fill and empty, feeling something like blood rush into his cheeks.
He tries to make a joke. He can’t.
