"Look, are you gonna help or not? Cause I didn't drive twenty minutes outside of town just to let this dog die, okay?" He knows he's not being exactly fair. It's fifteen minutes past nine, and he's pretty sure when he clicked on the clinic's navigation on google, it had said they were closing soon. But Bradley's also just come off a ten-hour shift, and the anxiety of having a potentially dying animal in his back seat as he'd broken one or three speeding laws wasn't improving his mood much.

"Jake," Maverick, even far away, sounds strict but mercifully calm. So very unlike how Jake is suddenly feeling. "I need you to take a deep breath and tell me what exactly is going on." Jake doesn't know if he can do that, his brain echoing over and over that he needs to get to the hospital, that nothing else matters. But training comes with the panic too. He's been taught how to push down the adrenaline and fear and work through the problem. It's probably the only thing keeping Jake from stumbling.
Jake grabs the phone again, taking a deep breath as ordered.

It had been good. After so long, a semblance of the family Bradley had shoved away, the last piece of himself from before he'd felt abandoned into adulthood, was finally back where it belonged.
As much as Bradley would never admit it, there had been a Maverick-shaped hole in his heart for years. Now, with time and communication, it was being patched. It was no longer a perfect match, the man more aged, softer, less tall in Bradley's mind. But the new silhouette was willing to mold itself to fit as snuggly as possible. Mav was willing to try.
