Summary
“We ventured too far, considering our unexpectedly low number.” Essek turns his face against the light, as if to let it cleanse some unwanted quality from his expression. Instead, he looks carved in bone, immortalized in frowning marble. “There were … traps. Perfectly clever ones. Still functioning.”
—--------
Essek tries and fails and tries to save the man he loves.

Summary
"Shit - Caleb, hey. Stay with me." Fjord pressed a hand to the man's chest, anchoring himself maybe more than the man on ground. "You're okay."
But Caleb didn't respond.
He was too warm. Not just feverish, but the kind of heat that felt spent - like the ash left over when a flame burns itself out.OR
In the ruins of an ancient temple, Caleb gives more than he has - again. When the fight ends and the dust settles, it’s Fjord who catches him. Who sees through the quiet self-destruction and refuses to let him burn away.
Caleb might think he has to earn his place with pain and sacrifice. But Fjord knows better.

Summary
This is what Caleb Widogast is—he is a wretched, oil-slick sort of thing, down to the pure throbbing essence of his core. It's a miracle beyond comprehension, then, that he is loved despite the blood overfilling in the honeycombs of his bones. It is the sort of miracle that he thought was reserved for better men than him.
Or: a collection of disparate stories about Caleb having a bad time, with a focus on healing and friendship. Featuring (among others) sleep deprivation, vampires, and the pervasive horror of slowly losing your humanity.

Summary
Caleb's eyes flew open, unfocused and wide. He didn’t see her. Not really.
"Bitte, Vater - nein… Ich kann das nicht -"
“Caleb.” Beau’s voice was sharp, low. She glanced toward the others - still asleep, gods willing. “You’re not there. You’re with us.”
He shook his head, still locked in the memory, eyes darting. “The fire - das Feuer - I didn’t - bitte, nicht - please, don’t make me -”
She gripped his shoulders, firm but steady. “Listen to me. You’re safe. You’re not in Rexxentrum. You’re in a freezing-ass cave with the dumbest group of powerful idiots in Wildemount, and no one’s going to hurt you.”OR
When Caleb falls ill on a perilous journey through the mountains, Beauregard and the others take care of him. But Caleb’s battle isn’t just against his sickness - it’s against the trauma that haunts him. In the midst of his struggle, Beau is forced to confront how far Caleb has yet to come in trusting his friends - and how much further she’s willing to go to make sure he does.

The spell flickers, fire fizzling out before it can even take shape or warm his fingers.
He hardly has time to think before the world tilts.
He must have missed his footing. He's going off the edge of the cliff. He really hopes his friends don't waste time trying to go down and find him. He'll fall and fall and then it'll all just stop and that's not what he wants, not anymore, not for awhile now, but it's still okay. It's still -
The last thing Caleb hears is Jester's voice, high and alarmed. Then, darkness.
OR
Caleb gets sick and doesn't tell anyone. Because, of course. His new friends have something to say about this.

Summary
What if the Apogee Solstice aftermath was different? What if Caleb and Beau had not survived unscathed and Caleb had wounds that seem to be incurable?
This is Essek’s pov of the situation.
-
A one shot that could have an even sadder second part if someone wants a real ending. -

Summary
Caleb is late coming home from Soltryce and Essek is worried. He is right to be.
Caleb had approximately four different paths he regularly took from Soltryce to his home. Given that it was a Wednesday, Astrid was on business in Nicodranas, and their usual butcher had a family emergency in the countryside, there were really only two routes he was likely to take. Factoring in Caleb’s distaste for the cacophony of Wednesday’s market in the square at the midway point and that it was sweet corn season, Essek assumed he would take the more winding of the routes to pass by the quieter vegetable stand and the baker.
It was not a overly long walk, but as Essek marched through the street, he bitterly thought that it was long enough to take time he worried he did not have.
A prompt fill for:
Caleb is late enough getting home and not answering Sendings that Essek risks venturing out into the streets of Rexxentrum looking for him—and finds him unconscious in the back of an alley, wrists bound and beaten to hell.Series

Summary
The Uthodurn scene with the shopkeeper and residuum got me thinking, what if Caleb thought the residuum might still be there? How would he deal with that knowledge? (Not well)
There’s gold in his arms. Well, not exactly gold, but maybe better (maybe worse, definitely worse). He heard it from the nice lady at the store, residuum is better than gold — worth more — it’s right there in the price, several gold for just a bit and he knows his exchange rates, that means it’s better than gold. Simple math. His skin itches and well, it’s itched since he got out, that’s not new. It itched before too, but in an excited, young way, a magic-waiting-to-get-out way, not a get-it-out-please-take-it-out way. What itches must out, is that a thing people say? He doesn’t know; words rotted in his mouth when he was locked up and now they skitter away from him like roaches. That’s what happens when you lose a decade.

Summary
He could almost smell the ozone in the air around him as his palms itched and crackled with a held potential. He could do it he thought, he would do it, if it meant that Nott might be happy, after all she had done for him he could do this for her if only to see her smile once more. It might break him, would break him, of that he was sure, but it would be worth it if it only meant she could be herself as she was always meant to be.
What was a little more broken to a man who hadn’t yet pulled all the pieces of himself back together again? One more nail in the coffin of someone already doomed would be worth it for the life he might be able to give.
