Doctor Kurotsuchi Mayuri, Captain of the Twelfth Division, Head of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, and self-proclaimed "greatest scientist to ever exist," is known for many things, some more dubious than others. However often he slips past IRB approval of his experiments, he still manages to publish his findings without getting into too much trouble in his recurring article "Effective Medicine for the Brain" in the Seireitei Communication magazine. But it's not the IRB he has to worry about when an unknown Shinigami writes a letter to the editor criticizing one of Dr. Kurotsuchi's experiments from a recent article. Immediately upon reading said letter, Kurotsuchi knows he must find out who this so-called "independent researcher" is and put them in their place. Thus begins a tale of scientific rivalry, battling wits, and...unexpected romance?
