Summary
“I can’t imagine a world where I know you, but have never felt love for you,” Carlos had told Cecil. “Maybe it wouldn’t look the same in every timeline, but I believe that every version of me, if he has met you and could still be called 'me' at all, loves every version of you.” But then, the two travel to a world where Desert Bluffs won the war against Strex instead of Night Vale, and where Carlos’ counterpart fell for Kevin long before he ever met a broken, blood-soaked Cecil in a lonely desert otherworld. As two chiral timelines collide around them, Carlos and Cecil are forced to face their unspoken feelings about Kevin, and Carlos’ hypothesis is put to the test. Her team is used to it too. In fact, she can’t seem to remember the last time she’s faltered in the air without someone swooping in to catch her before she hits the ground.
This time though, something feels different. She knows before the impact that, this time, she won’t be so lucky.

What is important for this story is that a Voice will not be silenced. You can beat them down but some part of them will stubbornly refuse to leave. That small part, like the embers of a long-dead flame, lie in wait to spark and slowly, perhaps unsteadily, as healing often is, return to the flame it once was. This ‘spark’ can be anything that they see as a core part of their personality: how they make their bed in the morning, how much money they give to busking musicians on the street, how much they care for their interns.
In this story, that last one is very important.
The Voice of Desert Bluffs will not be silenced for long.

The day StrexCorp takes over City Hall, the moon turns red. A shade of red none have ever seen before, as if blood is coating the moon and staining the sky around. The stars start to disappear as well, and before long, they're all looking up at a red-tinted sky.
Nearly two decades later, Kevin sits on Charles's lawn with him and Donovan, talking and laughing like nothing was wrong in the first place. "Huh," says Charles, pointing up with one hand and picking sticks out of Donovan's hair with the other. "Has the moon always been that red?"
