Another snowball whacks into the back of his head. Jack stops cold, processing, before he starts to turn, his upper body rotating, his head swiveling like he’s an owl in slow-motion. Behind him, Robby’s grinning, and he points to Edie, her head against his shoulder, grabbing at his nose with one tiny mitten.
“It was her,” he insists. “I saw everything. Heck of a shot, right? You gotta be impressed—”
“You’re both going down,” Jack informs him— a statement, a threat, and a promise— but first, he turns back to Dennis. “Neither of them can save you now.”

Nurses froze. A tech stopped mid-step. Even Dana, fearless on her worst days, halted in her tracks.
Trinity stumbled under Dennis’s weight, panic flooding her features. “Fuck—Dr. Abbot…” she breathed.
Jack didn’t wait.
He closed the distance in two strides and grabbed Dennis, hands sliding to both sides of the kid’s waist, hauling him off Trinity and straight into his chest. Dennis sagged instantly, collapsing against Jack like his bones had given up.
Jack’s jaw clenched so tight the muscle jumped. A few weeks later, Jack joins his husband for a four-week tour through the Rocky Mountain states, and the two finally talk about what happened between Dana and Robby nearly twenty years before, why it happened, and why Robby took so long to come clean with Jack about it.

"I just- ha- it's nothing weird. I just wanted to look over the edge. For fun. You know, for kicks." his voice was upbeat, trying to make light of it, but his eyes were trained off to the side, still not making eye-contact.
Robby seemed to startle him by stepping forward, hands on both of Jack's shoulders, trying to force him to look directly at him, leaning his head in to get in his face. Jack instinctively reached up and grabbed a handful of Robby's sleeve, like he was afraid Robby might start manhandling him. Robby seriously doubted he could manage that; Abbot was in much better shape than him. It did momentarily draw Robby's eyes to the ring on his finger though.
"The feeling you have right now will pass. It's temporary. You did so well today. They were lucky to have you down there. We're all lucky."

"Go get cleaned up, Whitaker!" Robby ordered, practically bumping him out of the way to get to work. "Already on it." He huffed, annoyed at himself and rushed away before he could smell the blood on him. He rushed to his locker, actually keeping two different scrubs in there. Sure, the second set was a cheaper and unofficial pair but its not like there was an "official" version. He changed as quickly as he could, going back to the scrub exchange to get another pair to keep in his locker.
"…blood expired, we…" one of the nurses passed by. Whitaker only caught a small portion of the sentence, but he needed to take one or two of those before- "Whitaker!" Robby shouted from a distance, "We need you, come on!" "Oh.! Yeah, yeah, I'm on it!" He wrapped everything up and closed his locker.

Dennis had always been a crybaby. He was upset at the term at first, but it made sense when Momma and David called him that. He had always been David’s duckling, following him around the farm like David had made him himself, the surprise baby of the family.
But he was twenty-six, would be a full doctor soon, and he was still a crybaby. It was okay. It was also embarrassing, and his coworkers didn’t make fun of him for having a stupid pain response, but he was a crybaby. Okay, Trinity made fun of it, but she was basically his sister. She was supposed to make fun of it. Because that’s what siblings who didn’t think they were your daddy did. He made fun of her for pretending she hated them all, but then snuggled him on movie nights, and she made fun of him for crying when he got hurt.
Thing is though, as Dennis grew up, he learned that some people particularly… liked… when he was easy to make cry. He’s come to adore that just a little. He’s more of a slut than Trinity, and he liked when they could make him cry without too much pain, make fun of him for it… there was a lot he liked about being a crybaby, because it’s not really a bad thing.
