Summary
“You had a handful of pills. Why did you have a handful of your pills in your palm?”
Jack blinks slowly. Why is Kent so upset? Does he not feel like the room is closing in on him? Because Jack could swear that it is right now. “I needed everything to be quiet for a second. It’s so loud in here.”
Kent’s mouth trembles in fear. “Jack, it’s silent in here. You’re scaring me.”
Jack flops back against the toilet tank and groans. “My head, Kenny, crisse. It’s loud in here.” He waves at his face, and that’s when Kent seems to get it. “’S just ‘cause the draft is tomorrow.”
“I don't give a shit about the draft right now Jack,” Kent says, his voice low and serious. “You were about to kill yourself.”
Or: Five minutes earlier than he would have otherwise, Kent finds Jack. Then, he and Jack find themselves.

Summary
"That's the way the song has always been, even way back when we were playing in World Juniors. 'USA Hockey is do or die.'" Kent takes a long gulp of his electrolytes and leans into the lunge, watching the rest of the players complete their cool-down stretches. Jack pretends to ignore the fact that he can audibly hear Kent's hip popping.
"That feels extreme, eh?"
-
He never had such a stark reminder that he was born in Pittsburgh than the giant red, white, and blue logo embroidered over his heart. As he glances out at the room full of expectant faces, he wonders, briefly, if agreeing to play for the United States might have been a mistake.

Summary
Kent knew it was a bad idea when he got the message in his inbox a week ago- in his email, out of all places, not even a text. He knew it was a bad idea when he went to bed last night- even though he stayed awake, staring at the ceiling for hours afterward. He knew it was a bad idea when he left his hotel so early that he had to sit in the parking lot in his rental car for thirty minutes.
He knew it was a bad idea when he finally stumbled into the shitty bar and saw Jack Zimmermann already waiting at a table in the back.
He only hated himself a little bit for how his heart stuttered in his chest.
Or: Jack and Kent meet up to try to reconnect. In doing so, they can’t help but think back to how they got here in the first place.
Based on the song "cool about it" by boygenuis that fits Jack and Kent perfectly

"Aren't there six of us?" Jack asked as Swoops took five beers out of the fridge.
"Yeah," Swoops replied, as he rooted through his drawers for a bottle opener, "but Parse doesn't drink."
That was news to Jack.
---
Jack gets traded to Vegas two years after his first Cup win. In between that win and his trade he does some soul-searching and breaks up with Bitty.

Summary
The phone rings in Kent's ear. He waits. And waits. And—
“Kent.”
Her voice sounds different than Kent remembers it; not the fond, round edges or no-nonsense tones he was used to hearing, but blunt. Hollow. Even just on his name.
There’s static over the line, crackling over the thousands of miles and three time zones between them. Kent can still hardly believe that she, out of all the Zimmermanns, picked up.
“Mrs. Zimmermann,” he says after a moment too long being frozen, but now is thrown into action, his words scrambling over one another to get out of his mouth faster. “How is Jack? Please, is he okay? Nobody will tell me anything and he’s not picking up the phone, I even tried Bob but. Please. I just want to know he’s alright.”
OR: After the draft, Kent can't get ahold of Jack. So, he tries calling the other Zimmermanns. Alicia is the only one to pick up.

Summary
"She knows people look at Jack—already big for his age and already resembling Bobby more than he resembles her—and expect he’ll follow in his father’s footsteps, onto the ice and all the way to a Stanley Cup. ‘His father’s son,’ they say, even though Jack has her eyes. He has her moods too; the anxiety that eats at her from the inside out is already apparent even though he’s so young. In the early hours of the morning, when she can’t sleep, Alicia thinks about her quiet, awkward son and worries he’s hers in all the wrong ways."
Or, Alicia Zimmermann, through the years.

Summary
Enouement - The bittersweetness of having arrived here in the future, finally learning the answers to how things turned out but being unable to tell your past self.
Boombox knew how to fly. Whether it’d be comforting someone in need, or talking about the past in a bright light to avoid others from finding out the truth. He knew how to fly. Sometimes, his mind would trail to the thoughts of his lips connecting with Valk’s, or opening up to Sword’s friend. In the end, he doesn't open up to anyone about how he feels, or his parents. Definitely his parents. With every step on the way, he can only feel his ability to fly grow weaker and weaker. But that’s okay, because Boombox always bounces back. He can still fly, after all.
