After another few moments go by, Gil tentatively asks, “Jess?”
“Gil!” Jessica breathes out, whirling around to look at him. “You’re here. I didn’t even hear you...come in,” she murmurs, her eyes not meeting his own. Gil starts to move again, getting about halfway through the dining room before Jessica starts to back away, raising one hand up as she dips her head.
“Hey,” Gil murmurs, digging his heels into the ground to prevent himself from gravitating towards her more than he already has. “What’s wrong? Is it Malcolm?”
Jessica shakes her head, pursing her lips. “No. No, Malcolm, he’s...he’s fine. As fine as he can be. It’s not Malcolm, it’s...you, Gil,” she says, almost all in one breath.

In many ways, my life had always felt like a big secret - one i wasn't in on. I was too young to remember him properly before he went away. Only about 4 or 5. He was clear in my brother and mother's memories, though. They knew what his smile was like, how he smelled, his voice. Those things were more foggy to me, unclear and distant. I knew was supposed to feel grateful about that, Im not supposed to want to know about him. But i couldn't help my curiosity. He was my dad, after all. Part of me.

Jessica has seen her son struggle his whole life. Her son has been through more than anyone could possibly comprehend, and it hurts her even more that he keeps all his pain locked away.
Even after so many years Malcolm still struggles, and in someways it’s worse more now than when he was little. He hardly eats or sleeps, he’s constantly anxious and barely trusts anyone. Not even himself.
So like any good mother she decided to look for some kind of solution. Not to “fix” him, no, her son wasn’t broken no matter what he thought, he just needed some help. He’s a survivor, who’s been through so much in his life he deserves compassion and love and so much more.
And that’s how she came across service dogs. Not that she didn’t know about them already, of course she knew of them she just never thought that Malcolm was someone who would benefit from one.
Now though, she’s going to get him one. Whether he likes it or not.
