Two years have passed since the events of Wheels of Thunder, and all Arashi and her lovers wish for is to enjoy a happy, peaceful life. But when an old friend arrives at their doorstep with a dreadful warning, it's clear that a new storm is on the horizon.
After his part in Garlemald's near-ruination, Zenos Galvus has avoided a homecoming for as long as he can. Now at last the time has come to face the sins of his past under Athena's control, but the wounds of his father have bled far deeper than he realised, and ghosts from long ago now rise to haunt his every step.

The admission does less for the regal queen, though. Koana, confident in his claim, secures two of Sharlayan’s finest: Thancred Waters and Urianger Augurelt. His sister Wuk Lamat is granted Erenville by official advisement.But in the quiet chambers of Old Sharlayan, Fourchenault Leveilleur strikes one name from both lists: Night Moon, the Viera warrior who has already borne more than the world had the right to ask. Believing he is sparing her, he erases her from the ledger.
What he does not account for is defiance — Krile’s questions, Erenville’s stubbornness, and Night Moon herself. When she steps onto the dais at Wuk Lamat’s side, Koana is forced to confront the storm he was never told about: a rival who unsettles him more than any blade.
