Summary
Soon after arriving in Saint Louis in 1924, after being unable to stand abjuration by his farm-rooted family, Johan Nylander became a regular on the guest list of the Lackadaisy Speakeasy- and shortly after that became a dancer and dutiful employee of Mrs. May. Out of all the individuals within the establishment, Johan grew closest with the band's saxophone player, Dorian Zibowski- who gave Johan his stage name, "Snowball," as well as one of the top enforcers behind the establishment, Mordecai Heller.
By 1926, after the death of Atlas May and the start of Lackadaisy's decline, Johan is wracked with the sense that the life he had found by chance was now hanging in the balance, with the likelihood of it all falling apart looming over him.
Now forced to grapple with an incomplete love life, the fear of the speakeasy that provided him his sense of belonging and ease going under, his loyalty to Mitzi, and the prospect of having to throw himself into the middle of Lackadaisy's bootlegging operation, the fate of Johan's future is uncertain- the only certainty he knows being that what lies ahead will test him to his limits.

Summary
Memories do not leave him. They are like a tattoos littered across his fur, etched deep until they become his very being. All that he is.
(“Take care of him my sunshine” his mother would whisper like a lullaby every night. Her eyes weary and heart to big-bleeding-)
("You won't or you just can't Luc. You either love me or you don't, if you walk out that door, that door I-")
(He continued, interlacing his fingers, "1915 tenement fire, no survivors."
Luc smiled, with a tight grin that lifted his glasses upwards," A tragedy, was it?")
No. Memories do not leave him. Never him. And beneath the branches of the gnarled tree, with its greying wood, and fading leaves-Luc remembers.
It's all he can do.
