The first time Derek notices, is when he's hiding in Stiles' room, hiding from the law that happens to be Stiles' dad, something doesn't smell right, or more accurately something is missing from the smell of a teenage boy's room.
He doesn't say anything, just lets it go, but it sits there idly in the back of his mind.
After that he starts to take more notice, not only of the boy, but how the boy is slightly different, slightly not what he's expecting, and that smell is still missing.

The Long Way Round (exclamation) is probably one of the best time travel stories I've read where the character starts off in canon time, goes back into time but doesn't change events; instead they manage to secure the course of history so that it does happen correctly before returning to their own timeline. In this case Stiles goes back in time and ends up in New York City where he meets Laura and Derek Hale. He stays with them, manages to procure magic training (he gets a wand!), gain a guardian dragon, and fall in love with Derek. Events have him returning back to the moment he disappeared and picking up in the current time to have more dramatic plot events occur.

The doorbell interrupts what had turned out to be quite the epic shoe hunt but, really, he’s grateful for the break. Or at least, he is until he heads down the stairs to grab the door, trips over a stuff animal of some kind, bashes his head on the wall and barely manages to catch himself from falling down the entire flight of stairs. As with all things, Stiles would like to state, for the record, that this is Scott’s fault.

It's Insanity, but... (rosepetals42) is a story I started reading on tumblr before finding my way here for the later chapters. I love it because I can totally see it as something Stiles and Scott would do with fostering/adopting a gaggle of kids because it was the only option for them. I like how Stiles and Scott's epic friendship is so deep that they have no problem being these platonic life-partners raising a family together but are still open to more kids and love. Love for Stiles comes in the form of Derek who enjoys performing at kid's birthday parties and getting to see how Stiles juggles parenthood with dating. I really love the kids too -- I just want to hug them all.
