Callahan gently thumbs over the metallic strings. Soaks up the warm vibrations they produce and thinks of Matheson, strumming out homemade little tunes and songs of the people alike, interweaving his own stories and the contributions of the other men into his art seamlessly. Matheson didn’t just make music—he made memories and rewrote old ones into new with clever words and a thoughtful flourish. It feels almost disrespectful to be touching this piece of him so brazenly, but Callahan can’t help himself. Not after today.
He winds his fingers around the neck of the instrument and tests the weight. It’s nothing, hardly any effort to lift it. Callahan brings it over his head, the leather strap just grazing the top of it.
Then he promptly smashes the fucking thing to pieces.
