It wasn't shocking that Octavian, son of the baker, would be reaped. He had as much as of a chance for the death sentence as any other boy in the town square. What was a shock, was Leo Valdez, another boy stepping in as tribute for a young girl.
Octavian has to swallow his fear and expose his deepest desires if he wants to survive just long enough in the arena. He has to make allies, slip under the radar, and ignore his crush on Leo if he wants to make it past the cornucopia.
