Summary
After being attacked during a case, Neal gets amnesia. Not knowing where he was or how he got there sends him into a panic. Unfortunately for Peter it kicked his memory back to when he first ran from Gotham to avoid Ra's. One of his most dangerous points of his past. And now he was running again, but not before knocking out every agent in his path. Now they have the task of finding a man that does not exist.
When Peter tells Mozzie what happened Mozzie has to call Keller. The only person able to calm Neal down at his worst. It's a race against time as the League of Shadows has also come to New York looking for one of their Ghosts.

“So, what will it be, tattletale?”
He knew Neal was a CI.
“Death by a firing squad, or an easily suicidal coverup? It’s your choice, Caffrey.” The leader, without a gun in hand, but an authoritative aura over the others, threatened him.
“Well, you know, this is a pretty nice suit, and it would be a shame to return it with so many bullet holes, hitting the ground may work better.” Neal suavely responded to Peter’s dismay.
“Neal, no-!” Peter was cut off by an arm around his mouth as he was forced heavily into a kneel.
Neal gave Peter that smirk, the one that meant he stole his wallet or maybe had some fancy wine for tonight, and it made Peter nauseous to see it on the face of his to-be dead friend.
So, with Peter’s muffled screams, Neal fell backwards off the steep roof of the former office building.

For years Neal Caffery has his name and previous line of work. However when a familiar tavern sets up in New York, Neal must face the fact he is no longer a ghost and the Trickster might still have a part to play.

“I just, uhm, did you mean it? When you said I could come to you? About anything?” Neal asks and all the suspicion in Peter dissipates, leaving behind concern and… a warm sense of sentimentalness.
“I did,” Peter answers. He feels himself relax a bit in his chair, the small seed of hope that’s been steadily growing within him finally starting to bloom.
Peter hears a shaky breath over the phone speaker and he frowns softly, wishing he could be there in person with him.
“After all this is done… after my time is, uh, served. What’s going to happen to me?” Neal sounds so unlike himself, the hesitancy in his voice squeezes Peter’s heart.

Who was Neal?
Years and years of painting Van Goghs, Vermeers, and Delacroixs meant that he was incapable of painting a Neal.

“I’m not Neal.”
Peter nearly bit off his own tongue with how quickly he cut himself off. “What?”
The copy of Neal Caffrey flicked the safety back onto his gun. He set it on the floor, not particularly far away from him, but not within easy distance either. Slowly, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled something out. It was small and shiny, the kind of trinket that Neal loved to fiddle with during debriefs. After it was out for a few seconds, the man tossed it toward Peter.
He caught it. It was a CIA badge.
“Believe it or not, this isn’t the first mix-up we’ve had,” the agent said, cracking a wry smile. “Now, if you’d be so kind as to trade me your badge, I think we’ll all be able to talk this out pretty easily.”
“You look just like him,” he said dumbly.
The agent shrugged, looking up from where he’d been examining the badge. “Yeah, that’s something that can happen with twins.”
or, Neal's identical twin is a CIA agent. It sure would've been nice to know that before they, in no particular order, nearly caused a CIA-FBI shootout, traumatized a new probie, started a food fight in the nicest restaurant in the city, and unwittingly switched places in the middle of a mission

"June’s maid had let him upstairs nearly two minutes ago, and still, he hadn’t been let in after knocking and calling out announcing himself. That was plenty of time to either answer the door, or call out that he needed a minute.
Something was wrong.
And Peter’s gut was always right."

“I could have just been shot, Peter,” he excuses, taking the moment in between to down some water with the meds. He suddenly wants that ‘medicinal red wine’ he’d mentioned earlier. “You’d be pretty jumpy too.”
“I’ve seen it before,” he continues. “Your reaction. I see it in a lot of victims. Assault, abuse, the likes.”

That was how Tim awoke.
Over the past week, weather begun frosting over in New York. It welcomed malevolent rain that congealed on the streets, and the ominous rumbling of thunder. This should have undoubtedly alarmed the undercover man; however, he bounded on with his days, blissfully oblivious. Now, as orange rays of sunlight illuminate his apartment at dawn, Tim was forced to belatedly confront his mistake.
He should’ve realised that the wailing rainstorm from the night before was a premonition for when he awoke with no feeling in his throat.
OR
Tim’s old scar from his fight with Jason flares up in the cold weather and leaves him mute for the day. He is still undercover as Neal Caffrey so, of course, everything spirals out of control from there.
