The thing is, Mike knows.
He’s known for the last eleven months, two weeks, and eighteen days. He’s known since it became impossible for Will to hide it, when the darkness almost killed him.
They just don’t talk about it. He doesn’t care that Will doesn’t like girls, or that he used to like some nameless boy a long time ago, back when they were kids, or somewhere in the blur of growing up.
But now, as the movie plays on and Bellamy leans closer to whisper something to Will, all Mike can do is think about it.
Or, after the end of the world, Mike Wheeler thinks he’s managed to go back to normal. Even if Eleven is gone. Even if Hawkins will never be the same.
Until Will makes a new friend and Mike realizes he can’t outrun forever the feelings that follow. -

He’s aware, distantly, that something about this isn’t right; Mike has never been so open with his touches, so willing to give Will even just a fraction of the affection that he wants. Will’s been fine with it – has forced himself to be fine with it, to be grateful for the minimal attention Mike gives him – but now that he has Mike’s fingers gently scratching his scalp, he can’t stop himself from leaning into the touch.
It’s wrong, probably – and definitely selfish – of Will to take advantage of Mike when he’s obviously not in his right mind; he feels guilt claw in his stomach just as readily as butterflies flutter, and he can’t help but let himself have this one thing, these gentle touches among an apocalypse, a bit of tenderness in a world that has only ever been harsh to Will.
