2B and 9S looked at each other. It was hard to place their trust in Jackass when they still had little idea of what was going on and what the information gathered would be used for. They had never been given any reason not to trust Anemone, though.
“Do you know when you might be able to tell us?” 2B asked.
Anemone had no idea when or if she would be able to tell them in terms of days or weeks, but she did know the criteria she hoped to meet before sharing the information. She hoped that was enough. “We need to know if it’s going to work or not. Announcing the project and having it fall through… would bring unnecessary pain. Do you understand?”Series

9S felt 2B’s gaze on him, but he didn’t meet it. Instead, he found himself thinking about the data he somehow had found when he was first activated, and the sense he had had when he first met 2B that he trusted and cared about her right away. The data left behind hadn’t been clear – just that there was someone who had been deeply important to the old version of himself, and he had enjoyed spending time with that person. It had taken him some time to realize that had anything to do with his immediate reaction to 2B.Series

Jackass looked at her intently for a few seconds before realization dawned on her. Her voice was uncharacteristically soft with understanding as she said, “…You want to try to bring them back.”
Jackass hadn’t been with them on the ground at the time of that fateful mission, but she had tended to provide support to their group from afar. She would stop by their camp periodically with new intel on things like the ways machines had been evolving in other areas and what had been successful in fighting them so far, or to gather information from them on what they had been seeing in the local machines lately.
They had had one such visit during that mission, though it was brief. Rose had shared, with cautious optimism, that there was a possibility units equipped with hacking abilities were now able to remove viruses from infected units. It had almost crushed Anemone to have to tell her otherwise, the next time they saw one another.Series

“I thought you liked fishing?” Devola asked. It wasn’t an uncommon sight for A2 and 2B to come to the Resistance Camp together bearing an absurd amount of fish these days.
She shook her head. “I don’t dislike fishing, but that’s 2B’s thing, and it’s better than having nothing to do.”
Popola looked thoughtful. “What do you usually do for fun?”
Fun. Right. To be fair, they had only met her fairly recently. “I haven’t done anything for fun since leaving the Bunker,” she said bluntly. “If I had time to waste, then it was better spent annihilating the machines.”

Summary
A2's eyes moved up and down, taking in Anemone’s posture and expression. It was pretty neutral, perhaps intentionally so, but she was still pretty sure that something was wrong. “I don’t mind.” Actually, that was kind of an understatement. She paused to consider her words and, when Anemone didn’t speak right away, took the opportunity to add, “If something is wrong, I would rather you did wake me up.”
Ever since coming back into each other’s lives, Anemone had been there for her whenever she had needed, so long as she actually allowed Anemone to know she needed it. She wanted to be there for her in the same way.
Anemone felt grateful for the reassurance. She had done so much of her processing alone that it still felt strange to seek someone out like this. With that, she said, “I hadn’t had a nightmare in a long time.”
It was slightly cryptic, but A2 understood the unspoken ‘until now’ all the same. After all, she was no stranger to nightmares herself. It was no longer every time she slept, but it was still probably over half the time that she saw Number 4 die before her eyes, night after night.Series

And I couldn’t…” She trailed off, her hands clasping tighter as she fought to keep tears from forming in her eyes. “I couldn’t face you. Not after what I did. And A2… understood.”
A2 understood what it was like to blame yourself for the death of someone you cared about. To carry that shame and grief around with no one to share it with. That was more than she could articulate, and probably more than she should share about A2’s feelings, as well.
He softened, finally becoming still. 9S came closer and knelt down so he could look her in the eyes. “I want to understand.”Series

“I like growing things. It feels like I’m bringing a life into this world that wasn’t here before, and raising it to be big and healthy.” As she said this, she carefully brushed her thumb across the tiny sprout peeking out from the ground. A2 had told her these ones might be radishes, because apparently those grew really fast. She had no idea what a radish was, so she was excited to find out.
What opposites they were. 6O dedicating herself to bringing life into the world, while White had spent the last few years taking it away. …Perhaps it was arrogant of her to think that way, to consider androids as ‘life,’ but it was hard for her to think of them any other way. Thus, it was life that she had asked to be extinguished, over and over again. It was life that she had sacrificed, every time she was told she must. And the rest of those lives… would not return.
Noticing White’s increasingly withdrawn demeanor, 6O scrambled for something else to talk about. “I hope that I can grow lots of flowers! And if I grow vegetables, maybe I can feed them to the birds?” She stopped to think about that. “Do birds eat vegetables?”

If A2 had known from the beginning what those machine terminal girls had told her, she would have deserted in the first place. She could imagine Number 21 in particular not being happy with the suggestion to so clearly violate orders and martial law, but they could have probably worked with Captain Rose to create a new life for themselves as part of the Resistance. Maybe some of them would have still been lost to the viruses, but maybe Number 21 could have learned new patterns to continue to outsmart them.
Maybe they could have been happy that way. Maybe they could have survived.
“If I had known we were being used… that we were sacrifices, I would never have gone through with the mission. Or gotten the Resistance involved.” A2’s voice was now quiet with grief.
“I know,” 2B said, her voice softening to match.
“If it isn’t the machines’ fault… and it isn’t her fault… then the only one I have left to blame is myself.”Series
