Summary
Curse him. Curse his name and this supposed gift he’d given of life. Even Javert’s final thought, submerged willfully in the cold waters of the Seine, was littered with the remnants of Jean Valjean. Let him be free. Let the water wash away the curse inflicted on his soul. Let him die now, too tormented to wait in agony for a natural death, even if it meant the remainder of his soul would go to Lucifer’s domain. Let his eternal life be one of misery, as he deserved. Perhaps Valjean would meet him there, but Javert did not think it so.

"He realized quickly he was neatly tucked in a bed, wearing a soft foreign white blouse, and his hair neatly brushed and tied. What sick mind had done this to him? He was undeserving of anything less than a cruel death, so why was he being granted a peaceful awakening?"

Valjean pulled him closer, and the man was shivering—it was a warm night, but the waters were still freezing, and he could feel the chill from the waters seeping into his bones. He supposed it wasn’t that different for Valjean, who was shaking in his underclothes, and he smelled of the sewers and the Seine and the worst things on earth and Javert wanted to spit onto his face. Wanted to curse the man for bringing him back to the land of living instead of letting him die for good, because what was Javert if not better dead than alive?
Yet he was alive. He was breathing, his heart was beating, and he was alive, alive, alive.

His voice carried strangely, surrounding Javert where he stood upon the parapet, not quite an echo. It settled warmly in his chest, like sunlight on a spring day to his deciduous heart. He could not account for this feeling. It grated against his misery, teasing at something like hope in his own sorry breast. What a cruel trick it was, to try to steal his hopelessness.
“I did not ask for you to be here,” Javert said, his own desperation beginning to bleed into his tone of voice. “You are free to leave me at any time.”
“Surely you must know I cannot do that.”
“Avert your gaze, then,” he said, near to a growl, “and let me be.”
