Summary
Disappearances, when they happen, are often trailed by smoke. Ashes of a person, of a presence everyone swears they knew. Soon enough, when it clears and wind scatters even the ashes of where they once stood, people begin to describe the smoke instead. They tell others what it smelled like, what it looked like, what it meant; until every re-telling, every description warps even the metaphysical shape of what once… existed.
As much as people like to think, as much as everyone wishes to believe they have the full picture, they don’t. We all have our secrets, yes, but these? These are fragments that run even deeper. Shattered shards missing from the complete mosaic of the self, pieces that even we may never find within ourselves. The parts that no one else ever sees, the part that we may never even fully understand.
So when we disappear, what truly goes missing? Is it the parts that people never got to see? Or is it the pieces that we never managed to understand? Maybe the answer really is within those smoldering ashes that people think are left behind but… when even those are nothing but fragments and pieces too, you really begin to wonder
