Once in a blue moon, a Shinigami gifts a human with its eyes in utero. Even rarer is when the one gifted with the eyes is a twin. B was a once in a lifetime case, and through their shared placenta, his eyes affected his identical twin brother L, too: B could see your name and when you die, and L, through touch, could tell you how. Orphaned as children, fate lends them a hand. They're taken in by Quilish Wammy, who takes special interest in their otherworldly quirks, and raises them in his orphanage for gifted children.
Over time, their paths diverge. L becomes, well, L, the world's greatest detective. B chooses to stay behind as his backup, longing to find the origin of his eyes and the truth about where they came from before committing to solving cases. But much like the Death Note is bound to sour the soul of the human who uses it, those born with the eyes are damned to the same fate.

That he secretly loved theater arts, and was so glad to act upon a guilty pleasure of his. Any one of those well-practiced answers, with a perfectly timed smile or a sheepish shrug, a perfect human with natural flaws and such.
He’d say any and all of those answers to cover the truth: he quite frankly didn’t pay attention to whatever the incompetent fool that his Japanese instructor (excuse him, Shibata-sensei) was dithering on about; he had merely smiled and nodded in autopilot.

Seeking out a pastry shop in the snow, L meets a young woman on the street that won't leave his mind. When he sees her again at the scene of a murder, he knows he has a new fixation to chase.
A reader-insert story set pre-Kira, where an eighteen year old L sets a new headquarters in America after establishing his career in England. A slow burn story exploring L and the reader's relationship as friends and maybe as more. The reader has a complex background that is slowly revealed over the course of the story, and is female-coded, so it may be limiting to some reader's appeal. Discusses dark subjects such as murder, homelessness, human trafficking, and abuse. These topics are handled in a canon-typical manner, but proceed with caution if these topics may trigger you, each chapter will have warnings at the beginning.
(Let me know if L seems too out-of-character at any point! It's difficult imagining a teenage L awkwardly dealing with romance and still keep him aligned with his actions/personality in Death Note.)
