“Michael,” Alex says in return. He’s pretty sure this isn’t the right way to address someone who’s in his professional charge, but at the end of the day, they went to school together. He’s known Michael since they were fourteen years old.
There’s a brief look of surprise on Michael’s face at the sound of his own name, but then his expression breaks into a mirthless smirk.
“You’d think Deep Sky would do background checks on their employees, huh? A Manes man, getting all up in alien business? We all know how well that’s turned out in the last century or so.”

At the beginning of senior year, Michael Guerin gets captured and thrown into Caulfield. At the end of it, Jesse Manes lets his youngest son in on the family secret.
Fifteen years later, Alex Manes is working for Deep Sky when he’s assigned to protect one of its assets as he works on something with unknown consequences.

His brother was dead. And every time he looked at his left hand, a dark feeling invaded his body that made it a struggle to do just about anything. He didn’t want to get up in the morning and do his work. He missed the way it seized up, the way it ached in the morning, the way it hurt. He hated that he was healed.
