As soon as she leaves, he coughs, his body shaking with the force of it. Something feels like it’s clogging his lungs, almost like he has a cold. He wants Jay to come back, to rest her human-warm hands on his skin and—
Gillion coughs violently, hacking until something sits in his open palm. Flower petals…? They’re…blue. But why would he be coughing them up? Something tickles the edge of his memories, of something one of his parents told him about before he left—some sort of story about a merfolk who was cursed. But he can’t be cursed!

Lost in his surroundings, Gillion doesn’t notice the shift in terrain from soft grass to a rocky river bank. He strides forward confidently, because he is Gillion Tidestrider, Champion of the Undersea, The One, Paramount Champion, Healer of the Sick, Brother of Dugon, Leviathan Tamer—you get the idea.
“Gill, be careful-”
He puts all of his weight on a stone that comes loose, and he falls. It’s a dizzying tumble, and the bright blue sky flashes in front of his eyes until he comes to a stop at the bottom of the hill, almost submerged in the water.
“Gillion?” He squints at where Jay is standing, fiery red hair glinting in the sun. She picks her way down the slope quickly, loose stones cascading down from where she dislodges them. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” he promises. He’s had worse. Even if his vision feels slightly blurry and his head is pounding.

“Oh don’t worry, they’re alright, for now,” Price said. Condescension dripped from his voice like ooze and it made Chip shudder. “After all,” Price continued. “I can’t let them miss the show now can I?”

Jay was pretty good at getting herself out of tricky situations. Sure, the majority of the time it didn’t go off without some sort of hitch, but that was just the nature of the situations she and her co-captains got into. It was hard to come out of them unscathed, but she almost always got out of them.

Generally speaking though, Chip's natural instincts keep him safe. Which is why when he dove in front of a fireball to get Gillion out of the way he was a little confused.
Because by all means self preservation should have kicked in there. But it just… didn’t.
Chip knew he was getting more selfless for his crew, for Gillion. He didn’t realize it was risk mortal wounds levels of selflessness.

Jay made her way down to the quarters she shared with Chip and Gill. She peeked her head around the corner of the stairs and looked over to Chip’s bed. As expected, there he was. However, Jay didn’t expect to see him curled up in blankets, shivering.
“Chip?” He looked up at her. “Are you okay? Ollie wanted me to check on you.”
“Oh, uh, just a little cold,” Chip lied. Jay approached his bed and sat on the edge of it. She put the back of her hand on his forehead. It was almost as hot as an oven.
“Okay, Chip you’re warm, even for you,” Jay said. He shivered a bit as Jay pulled her hand away from his forehead. “Why didn’t you mention that you weren’t feeling well?”
