Summary
When Dib turned 18, he made a deal with his father: he would give up his paranormal research, go off to university, and work at Membrane Labs; in return, he would never have to worry about money ever again. It’s been a few years now, and Dib has completed his side of the deal early. Now he’s stuck working in a sterile, boring laboratory studying whatever it is his father assigns him.
Things come to a head, however, when Dib is knocked overboard while on a marine expedition and is subsequently rescued by an eccentric pair of old men. Soon enough, Dib finds himself spinning a web of lies that leads him to a sleepy town known only as Gravity Falls.
All to study mushrooms of course. Or at least that’s the reason his father thinks Dib is so keen on exploring this small town in the middle of nowhere. No other reason…

Here are some of my favorite chapters from a fanfic I posted on Wattpad. The rest is a bit of a hot mess. (I do like some parts, though.)
You don't need it to be in context to understand it. The reader dropped into the world from another dimension. And they ended up having to teach Zim about human affection. I might re-write the other chapters later.
I'm new to AO3 and writing in general. Please don't judge me too harshly.

Dib just wanted to move on.
He moved away from home, away from his dad who was never there and away from his home town that held far too many old memories. Dib was actually making a life for himself without being revolved around somebody else for the first time! He is doing well as the youngest detective the city has ever seen and has completely dropped all of those ridiculous fantasies he held as a kid. Life is great. Dib is forgetting the past
So why does fate have to ruin everything once again when signs start pointing him back to an old enemy. A past that he would really prefer to remain forgotten is forcing it's way back into his life whether he likes it or not. No matter how hard Dib runs, he is finding it harder and harder to ignore the fact that not just his life is in danger. Once again, the fate of the world and more comes down to him, what he doesn't realize is that this time he is not alone. Zim will make sure of that.or:
Dib deals with his problems by not dealing with his problems and Zim is also dealing with Dib's problems. Also, the entire universe is trying to blow itself up but Dib thinks that's a problem for another day.Series
