After the caravan, it's the next thing to go, replaced with a double bed that fills up the space in Johnny's room but doesn't make them sleep any further apart at night.

Johnny never had to forcefully tell Gheorghe anything about his past, it just sometimes happened naturally, when he was too comfortable in Gheorghe's company. He knows Gheorghe wouldn't judge him for his past mistakes but then, one night when he reveals something which was definitely his worst mistake ever, he doesn't think Gheorghe will view him the same way again.

It takes one particularly bad summer to get Johnny thinking.
There’s a string of things that happen. All at once, it seems, and it knocks Johnny off kilter for the rest of the year. It’s a shock to the system ten times over, so much problem and pain that it all blurs into one. Somewhere towards the end of it, after the dead crops have been dug out and one of the cows is sold for not enough and the Home Office have finished breathing down Gheorghe’s neck and his dad has passed away suddenly in the night, Johnny wakes up and thinks to himself, we’re not the young ones anymore. -
