Summary
“Do you ever think of how many people have died in this world and how big heaven would have to be to accommodate them?”

Summary
Cole Phelps is a flawed man who made many mistakes in his life. Some of those mistakes were negligible, others unforgivable, and some? Well, some mistakes were made out of the desperation to survive seen only in the terrified eyes of a caged animal.
But what happens when one so flawed, so riddled with mistakes and regrets and what-ifs, seeks to change in a world with no room for people like him? What happens when a man buried in his own dark holes finally tries to claw his way back up to the surface? Will the ladder lead to sunlight, or be kicked out from under him in his moment of largest vulnerability?
How do you seek acceptance when you realize you can't deny your sexuality any longer, no matter how much and how long you've tried to force the heteronormativity expected of a man in the 1940s? How do you heal when you know that all your attempts to force it only hurt everybody you love? How do you heal when it's still your fault at the end of the day? He needed help.
And the surprisingly soft eyes and calloused hands of a familiar face might have the strength to pull him into the sunlight when the ladder's kicked out from under him. Or at least, Stefan Bekowsky's embrace might soften the inevitable fall.

Summary
“What was her name?”
“Who?”
“Mrs. Phelps.”
“Marie.”
Stefan snorts in approval. “Chaste. Sweet. Tell me about her.”
“Her maiden name is Salisbury; she hitched a bus from Atlanta and rode it to the end of the line, which happens to be LA, in ‘38; her parents are in the record industry, and she is not.”
“Yeah?” He leans back in, some parts rapt with the story--other parts with Cole’s lips. “What did she come here for, then? Aspiring actress?”
“The sea,” Cole answers, either unaware or willfully ignorant of Stefan’s intentions. “Her friends living here had sent her postcards with the ocean on them. She’s never seen it before. That’s where we met.”
--
Stefan meets Mrs. Phelps--in a manner of speaking.

Summary
Man, you've got a cold dark heart
And it burns with a guilty smoke
You tell me 'just give in,'
And 'you've got nothing to lose,'
And I guess I would never know
But I was damned from the very start
And bound by a crooked plan
Then I was left for dead with my head to the ground
And my hands tied behind my back -
