Summary
Scott’s childhood was filled with bedtime stories told by his mother, stories of the other empires, of magic, of the gods. She told grand tales of corruption and the gods who sacrificed themselves to cast it from the realm, leaving the land they created and the people they guided safe.
Then she dies, and there is no more time for stories. Scott devotes himself to his studies. He molds himself into the image of a beloved king, elegant, knowledgeable, kind, and perfect. Always perfect. He provides for the citizens of Rivendell and watches as his kingdom thrives. He joins the Alliance, establishing trade routes and alliances, and gains a few friends along the way.
But something goes wrong. Something creeps through the land, corrupting it. Accompanying it is a creature of magic, a creature that speaks with a voice belonging to the shadows and Nether, and each day it grows stronger.
His mother's stories may no longer just be stories. But they may not be the entire truth either.

Owen’s eyes darkened, grief painting his features. “Revenge, no one deserved to live after what they did. After what they did to him!” His eyes turned misty instead. “He was the only one who ever cared, and they set him ablaze…”
Scott sucked in a breath; clearly, he was now in over his head. He probably shouldn’t have asked Owen that question, but—what was that dumb phrase humans always said? Curiously killed the cat, was it?
Whatever, he had more pressing concerns; for example, this young vampire was doing strange things to his heart, he almost felt bad for Owen, but surely not? Scott didn’t care; he was just talking with Owen because he was bored and needed entertainment, not because he cared.

Scott gasped for breath, his arms wrapped around his knees and his back pressed as far into the corner of his bedroom as he could get. He was shaking, he was vaguely aware, and the sun had started hitting him dead in the eyes, blinding him and letting him know that he had definitely been sat here for multiple hours. He knew he needed to pull himself together, this was just pathetic, but he couldn’t seem to manage it.
Jimmy had died.
Jimmy had died for the third time.
If this was one of the watcher’s death games Jimmy would be gone. Vanished without a trace, with only the hope remaining that the pattern would stick and he would be returned to his home server, and that this wouldn’t be the round that the watchers got bored and left it permanent.
