The Grant-Gomez family isn't doing so well.
Kevin is swamped with responsibilities and stress, most of which he can't even talk about, and having to lie about why he's not sleeping at night is starting to take it's toll on him. Not to mention all the new problems for him that popped up seemingly overnight.
Gretel is suddenly itching and agitated, and no, it's not a rash (or puberty, like her mother thinks-). But with Hamster out of town and her brother at the end of his rope, she's left to her own devices and instincts she doesn't know if she can trust.
Carolina and Dave are worried about their children, more than they already were to begin with. With their son looking worse and worse each day, and their daughter's usually strange behavior beginning to be a little too strange to brush off anymore... Well, they fear that maybe their own insecurities have gone to their children, despite their best efforts.
Fred's relationships are strained. Working with Hiromi on the school paper (and being chased down by murderous mascots) has made them closer than she'd expected, but after their breakup, Fred isn't sure how to balance her cousin and her friend.
Oh, and Hamster's away at an art thing.

Focused as he is on Hotguy, Cub barely notices himself being backed into a corner. Cub’s powers mean that the world holds very few actual corners for him, but- A selfish urge, to have Hotguy’s hands on him, to be slammed against a wall- To make the whole thing real.
A miscalculation. Hotguy does lay hands on him, but not to throw.

Hotguy’s power suppression cuffs. Cub had forgotten them. Hotguy never uses them on Cub.
Hotguy looks almost as startled as Cub does by his own actions. By the cuff on Cub’s wrist, real and solid.
If Cub phases out now, everyone will know. Hotguy will know. For the sake of his powers ruse, Cub has to pretend his powers are properly suppressed by the cuffs.
In a snap decision Cub may never understand about himself, he snatches the other cuff out of Hotguy’s hand, slapping it closed around Hotguy’s wrist with a second decisive click.Or:

James remembered very well where he had seen it last. As for where it was now… Well. He responded with what was only a tiny lie.

But it’s not so bad (He’s lying, it fucking sucks) at least he has the boy in the bed next to him, and his paper, and they finally stopped giving him cottage cheese with his meals.
He’s lying, he just wants to go home, but the doctor and this strange new thing in his chest isn’t going to let him. That’s fine, he’ll just have to get himself out.
TLDR: Mike Wheeler gets taken to Russia, gets powers and has to figure out how to get himself the hell out of there without killing himself first.
