“Kris…I get what you were trying to do. Hype me up, right? Show off what I’m..." She winced. "Good at. But you don’t have to… I don’t…” She couldn’t find the words. Or maybe she could find them, but she couldn’t dig them up and expose them. It’s not what I want. I don’t want to be… Stupid. It was so lame, so pathetic. It was too much. So she shrugged, her mouth quirking wryly. “I mean… what are we doing here, Kris?”
She didn’t know what she expected. She didn’t know what she thought they’d say. ‘Okay’? Or if they’d say anything at all. Maybe they would just nod and move on. But she knew she wasn’t expecting them to say, in a voice that was clear as day and as smooth as a night with no stars,
